Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just found Philadelphia, should I chuck that in with the mash?

Did you already reheat and mash the potatoes? You know you can’t reheat them again, right?
You should only reheat something once. So you’re going to have to eat cold mash.

Just wanted it done as knew would be tired later on to cook the whole thing, so made in advance, it seemed like a legit plan at the time, until it all went tits up!

So had you not thought through the potatoes at all? Had you had lasagna sheets and been able to continue with that original plan would you still have started a thread but just asking how to reheat the potatoes?

Please do.

OP as I'm Irish I have potatoes with practically every meal. But I draw the line at lasagne and spuds. However if I was in your shoes, with the boiled potatoes I would let them cool down, then slice them and fry them on a hot pan. Amazing. Serve with your pasta bake.

Loving the purists on here

Yeah, make sure you start with your sofrito why dont you, or your food isnt even fit for the dog.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 05/01/2026 16:57

I would mash the potatoes with plenty of butter and a bit of cream or warm milk Maybe pop some Italian herbs through and use it to top the lasagne mix. Maybe drizzle the cheese sauce half under the potato and half over. Nice Italian style cottage pie. Oh and until recently it wasn’t uncommon for lasagne and chips to appear on a pub menu so whilst it’s not for me, it’s not as weird as people are making out.

I don’t understand everyone saying no potatoes with lasagna!!

Everyone I know has chips and salad and if feeling it garlic bread too.

I know that is a lot of carbs but so what!!

Same. Its standard

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 16:58

Why is what i’m trying to do now so much more effort than the main cooking of it all this morning 😂ffs

I don’t own a microwave. Waste of counter space in a small kitchen. Whats odd about that? You don’t really need a microwave to cook.

On it's own, nothing. In combination with the op's other responses there's lots odd about it.

I’ve taken on the suggestions, I will do the mince with mashed potato on top, then pour the cheese sauce over the top. Don’t know why but it seems a weird dish, no idea what to call it when Dh & Dd ask me

It's cottage pie!

Inthezonenow · 05/01/2026 16:34

Actually, onion to infuse béchamel sauce is perfectly reasonable (even in winter)

Can you use a red onion?
It might make it a pink cheese sauce, but hey...🤷‍♀️

Homegrownberries · 05/01/2026 17:01

Out of interest, how were you planning on reheating these non mashed softly boiled potatoes that were cooked in advance?

Until recently?

What sort of establishments are you attending that have withdrawn their chips?

Anonomoso · 05/01/2026 17:05

HRTFT.

Not a great lover of pasta but do like the meat/bechamel sauce combo so I've used leek sheets before.

Just made a couple for the freezer and instead of using a white/bechamel sauce I'm trying sliced mozzarella instead..

Don't know unless you try.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 05/01/2026 17:09

@soupyspoon Haven’t seen chips with lasagna on a menu in a few years. I must be eating at incredibly posh pubs 🤣

StonwEd · 05/01/2026 17:09

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 15:56

Oh ffs, it’s got me thinking

Lasagna filling:

Beef mincemeat
1 onion
2 tins tinned tomatoes
tomato purée
garlic

Maybe a herb…oregano….?

Actually bit scared to post this!

Where's the soffrito, the red wine, the love! I spent most of a day making some big lasagnes over Christmas- this makes me sad but I'm thoroughly enjoying the thread thanks op! I do hope your dinner problems come to an end soon 🙏

firstofallimadelight · 05/01/2026 17:11

There’s people saying this thread must be fake because it’s so bizarre but boiled potatoes (or chips/ jacket potato/ garlic bread) is very normal. As is cheese in lasagne.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 17:12

Not really feeling it tbh 😂

OP, do I have news for you - lasagna IS PASTA. so lasagna with potatoes on the side is, and I can't say this strongly enough, EXACTLY the same as a pasta bake with potatoes on the side. The shape of the pasta is the only difference, which will no longer be an issue 0.5 seconds after entering your gob.

firstofallimadelight · 05/01/2026 17:13

I would either put pasta in instead or have bolognaise without the pasta element

PGmicstand · 05/01/2026 17:16

Faceonthewrongfoot · 05/01/2026 16:53

Would pickled onion monster munch work? Asking for a friend.

They'd probably go soggy. You need something with a bit more structure.
I only know about this as I went to a friend's house a while back and she made vegan lasagne with a crunchy topping (but she used tortillas instead of pasta sheets as she'd run out).

FOJN · 05/01/2026 17:16

Threads like this make me laugh like Basil Brush.

Homegrownberries · 05/01/2026 17:16

I'm getting doughnut vibes. Have you considered putting sprinkles on top?

PragmaticIsh · 05/01/2026 17:20

You can't put the tomato based bolognese-style meat with the potatoes, that is grim. A cottage pie doesn't have tomato!
