Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

I get infusing/flavouring the milk... a bay leaf, cloves, mustard, peppercorns... but an onion?!

I think I need a lie down after this thread 😂

It makes a surprising difference to the taste, I didn't expect much either the first time but now love when I have time to let the milk infuse.

You did! You said your mum put cheese in the sauce and on top before grilling it!

Just grilling/melting the top part

Just grilling/melting the top part

But it’s already melted in the oven. It doesn’t need grilled.

ilovepixie · 05/01/2026 16:38

This must be a wind up. Who puts potatoes in a lasagna 😂😂

Ive never had lasagne with chips

Oh, my husband swears by lasagne with chips. He used to have it for lunch in a tiny cabin cafe near his work and is still devastated that the cafe was removed in a shake-up of the general area.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 05/01/2026 16:39

I unreservedly support all forms of double-carbing. Absolutely love a boiled potato in butter, haven't had one for years but my mum was obsessed with them and now I wonder why it's been so long.

But why if the lasagne has already been baked in the oven?

mogtheexcellent · 05/01/2026 16:41

just use pasta. Its a bolognese bake. One of my fave micro ready meals.

No, surely mash the spuds then mix in the cheese sauce and top the meat sauce with the cheesey spud and grill the top. Why would you mix the cheese sauce in with the meat?! Weird!

Not mixed in, sort of drizzled over

Seems weird

I’m sorry, @Brainfogtothemax , but eating potatoes as a side dish for a pasta dish is extremely weird to me - much like eating curry with rice, and chips on the side, which used to be a favourite dish of the males in the engineering faculty when I was a student.
I’d suggest you don’t use any pasta and make a cottage pie with the mashed potatoes and use the sauce for vegetables in a cheese sauce to have as a side dish, since you aren’t having a leafy green salad Grin

Tryagain26 · 05/01/2026 16:44

I'm a bit confused about why you would have potatoes with lasagna.
But as you have just use them like you would lasagna sheets.
It will be delicious

SerendipityJane · 05/01/2026 16:45

And yet it's had so many cooking tips.

Ophy83 · 05/01/2026 16:46

Just use another type of pasta instead of lasagne and layer as you usually would. You may wish to parboil that pasta if it's a thick sort that would have a longer cooking time.

Pop the potatoes in the fridge for tomorrow. They'll be lovely sliced and sautéed. Or roasted.

Ophy83 · 05/01/2026 16:48

Or do a cottage pie with a side of veggies in cheese sauce as suggested above. Sounds perfect on a cold day.

I have salad most days for lunch, even when snow on the ground. Have hot meal in the evening.

@Brainfogtothemax I might have missed this, but why did you cook the potatoes so early on?

Just wanted it done as knew would be tired later on to cook the whole thing, so made in advance, it seemed like a legit plan at the time, until it all went tits up!

But how did you plan to heat the potatoes up? Because you didn’t know how to do that!

Tryagain26 · 05/01/2026 16:49

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:42

But there’s a difference between a pasta dish and then potatoes on a plate and a slice of lasagna with a few potatoes on the side next to it, surely?! It just seems weird with the pasta dish. You also probably wouldn’t have a pasta dish with a plate of chips too, but a slice of lasagna with chips next to it is normal?!

A lasagna is a pasta dish though! I dont see the difference. Lasagna sheets are just pasta in a different shape.
And I don't think it's normal to have lasagna and chips either

I know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don’t own a microwave

I had my doubts up to this point but now you have jumped the shark, as the they say.

I don’t own a microwave. Waste of counter space in a small kitchen. Whats odd about that? You don’t really need a microwave to cook.

PGmicstand · 05/01/2026 16:26

Pour the cheese sauce over it, top with crushed up crisps (cheese & onion if you have) and some grated cheese. Grill the top until it bubbles.

Would pickled onion monster munch work? Asking for a friend.

Anonanonanonagain · 05/01/2026 16:10

All i want now is lasagna and i even have the sheets. Sadly no matter what way I chop it, cut it or mash it the stew I have in the slow cooker cannot be turned into a lasagne 😭

Of course it can

You just get lasagne sheets.

Throw them in the bin

Boil up some potatoes but dont add any butter or milk

Do add an apostrophe.

About 5 hours later, assemble the stew, potatoes, cheese sauce under the grill

Fine cooking.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 16:54

Just found Philadelphia, should I chuck that in with the mash?
