Made the lasagna without the lasagna

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just cook some other pasta. Mix up with pasta sauce, sprinkle cheese over the top and it's a pasta bake. Very tasty it will be. No idea why you were doing potatoes but you could slice them up air fry, and substitute in layers for the pasta or mash and layer.

Yes but they need to be *In something don’t they?-butter, olive oil etc, it’s ok a poster reminded me about milk 🤣

Okay - if this is true then what was your plan for re-heating the cold mushy, fully boiled potatoes when the lasagne was finished?? As in, if you had lasagne sheets and everything went to plan.. when the lasagne was ready, if you weren’t going to mash these potato’s, what would you do? You’d have to heat them again somehow or would you just serve them cold?

Why is salad a big no in water but stone cold plain boiled tatties are fine??

For those questioning the grilling, wouldn't that just be a quick blast under the grill to cook the cheese on top. Before cheese added on top the meal would have been cooked as normal in the oven.

takealettermsjones · 05/01/2026 16:13

Now, now, that's not the spirit. You just need a positive mental attitude, a panful of dried out spuds, some contraband cheese and your mother on the blower.

You had me agreeing till I read about ringing my mother. I would rather ring lucifer himself and ask his advice on this whole thing. Needless to say he would hang up on me and summon me down sooner than expected.

Why would you do that? The cheese that is on top cooks while it is in the oven. No additional grilling required.

Anonanonanonagain · 05/01/2026 16:16

Considering the cheese was already in her sauce the grilling would have been pointless.

If I was in a mad rush I might pop the oven grill on for the last 5... but OP has been cooking since breakfast time... plenty long enough to brown a pasta bake.

Anonanonanonagain · 05/01/2026 16:17

A potatasta bake if you will.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 05/01/2026 16:17

OP i think you need to realise at no point today we're you ever making a lasagne.

You were making some cheesy pasta bake with a bland tomato mince and some potatoes.

Lasagne should have a proper ragu in- always start with onion, celery, carrot, good slow cook. Bechamel is no cheese, bit of nutmeg and an onion in the milk first. No one is expecting chips or garlic bread or potatoes as a side to lasagne unless they are in a spoons and trying tk soak up too much booze.

Turn what you've made into a potato bake- mince base, potatoes and bit crushed or chopped with cheese sauce on top. It'll taste good.

sittingonabeach · 05/01/2026 16:20

@DappledThings I'm not saying I would do that, just making a suggestion re the grilling as some people may

canuckup · 05/01/2026 16:23

Spuds and lasagna, what a meal! 🤤

AhBiscuits · 05/01/2026 16:24

I always make lasagne with cheese sauce even though I know it's wrong. More cheese is always a good thing.

Why is there an onion in the milk??!! 😂

I’ve taken on the suggestions, I will do the mince with mashed potato on top, then pour the cheese sauce over the top. Don’t know why but it seems a weird dish, no idea what to call it when Dh & Dd ask me

Pour the cheese sauce over it, top with crushed up crisps (cheese & onion if you have) and some grated cheese. Grill the top until it bubbles.

you pop an onion in the milk to give it a bit more flavour - my mum used to push two cloves into have an onion when making a Bechamel.

I get infusing/flavouring the milk... a bay leaf, cloves, mustard, peppercorns... but an onion?!

I think I need a lie down after this thread 😂

Bechamel is very often made with a small piece of onion. That’s very normal. It’s bechamel sauce.
Cheese not included.

I confirm onion (whole) or shallot in the milk is a thing. It’s removed before serving.

Bechamel has onion though. You take it out before serving.

Inthezonenow · 05/01/2026 16:34

Actually, onion to infuse béchamel sauce is perfectly reasonable (even in winter)

That’s next level bechamel making! A bit like how you make proper bread sauce, you infuse warm milk with onion, bay, whole peppercorns and nutmeg for a couple of hours and then drain and use the milk to make the sauce. Obviously anyone who doesn’t do this for a weekday meal is going straight to hell and doesn’t deserve to call themselves a cook.

Potatoes? I thought that you were making lasagne?

Wondering the same? Who makes potatoes with lasagna?
