Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

OK I've read all the OP's posts and now I feel like I've smoked something illegal. WTF is going on?
Boiled potatoes with lasagne but no leafy greens because it's winter??????

A bong made from a potato?🤔
But then I've always been very industrious.

takealettermsjones · 05/01/2026 15:50

I am now double baffled about why you can't eat potato salad when it's snowing??!

Twilight zone...

This has to be one of the most innocously insane threads I've seen in a long time, I'm actually weeping with laughter... OP, is it your first day on planet Earth or are you having us on?

I was just about to say the same thing, this is the most bizarre thread I’ve seen on MN for a while

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 15:50

I never said grilling 😅

You did! You said your mum put cheese in the sauce and on top before grilling it!

cocobanana922 · 05/01/2026 15:51

The only acceptable potato with lasanga is a jacket potato with the potato taken out and mixed with cheese and butter and then put back inside the potato skin, surely?

GlomOfNit · 05/01/2026 15:51

Bobiverse sorry, I think your crack about the peppers was in homage to the OP's leafy greens comment further up ... 😂

I hope the OP has worked out that by 'leafy greens' we mean winter staples like cabbage, kale, broccoli etc and not delicate salad leaves (which you could actually grow on your windowsill all year round anyway).

JoshLymanSwagger · 05/01/2026 15:51

pinkdelight · 05/01/2026 15:49

Leafy greens is lettuce/salad and it's perfect with lasagne all year round! Unlike buttery boiled potatoes which peaked in 1946 with some tinned sardines.

And during my childhood, served sans butter but with liver with onion gravy that you needed a knife for...

ittakes2 · 05/01/2026 15:51

I think this is wind up

Please don’t. The OP is confused enough. Leafy greens are not just salad.

AllSerene · 05/01/2026 15:52

I've been as boggled as most people, at the idea that potatoes with lasagne is fine, or even necessary, while being bizarre to have potatoes with any other kind of pasta bake. However, in fairness to the OP, it occurs to me that the proportion of pasta to sauce is much lower in lasagne than it is in most pasta bakes (or, at least, in the kind of pasta bakes I've ever made). This could result in there being more sauce to be mopped up by the potatoes, with the lasagne.

@Brainfogtothemax, I do hope you've been able to enjoy the humour in this thread, as you're obviously having a 'mare of a day. On one hand, your dinner plans are in disarray while, on the other, you're feeling rubbish. I hope that your dinner ends up tasting delicious and that you feel much better soon.

If I called my mum to tell her I had a shit day because I couldn't make dinner she would laugh at me....

I’m not going to call/text her to say that, but to ask what the hell she brought me up on and passed down to me that everyone else has never heard of/thinks is really bizarre

Haven’t read all the thread bit bemused about potatoes and lasagne 🤔 why don’t you freeze the bechamel sauce and make shepherds pie

Umy15r03lcha1 · 05/01/2026 15:54

If you have a packet of hundreds and thousands left over from DD last birthday, sprinkle them in the bechamel (not bechamel) sauce, pour it over the potatoes and call it Unicorn runny poo sauce.

I dread to think what’s in that ragu for the lasagne…

Oh ffs, it’s got me thinking

Lasagna filling:

Beef mincemeat
1 onion
2 tins tinned tomatoes
tomato purée
garlic

Maybe a herb…oregano….?

Actually bit scared to post this!

Aren't they both white..?

eosmum · 05/01/2026 15:56

I often use leftover cooked pasta mixed in the cheese sauce and put on top, it's actually nicer than a layer of lasagne sheet on top. My son in law has to have mash with his lasagne. We often have chips. No biggie.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 15:57

ScaredOfFlying · 05/01/2026 15:35

Yep, totally confused now. You were planning to serve on the side so would have heated before serving anyway. So just heat them the same way you were always planning to, then mash them?

(Microwave would be best).

I know 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don’t own a microwave

Pasta bake with the other type of pasta and roast the potatoes

Scottsy200 · 05/01/2026 15:57

Why on earth would you have boiled potatoes with lasagne??

Mix the cheese sauce into the meat mix. Top with mashed potatoes and grated cheese. Bake in oven. Italian cottage pie

No, surely mash the spuds then mix in the cheese sauce and top the meat sauce with the cheesey spud and grill the top. Why would you mix the cheese sauce in with the meat?! Weird!

So, how did you plan to heat the boiler potatoes when it came time for dinner? Because you didn’t know how to do that…

I hope they are, they'll learn a few things about their new fangled flat noodles and tomatoes. Or 'tomato's'
