Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

You can’t just put potatoes in the pan directly onto a hot stove? The pan will burn, they were originally boiled in water 😬

Of course you can, you're not leaving them there until morning! Stick some butter in, put it on the heat, and mash. Season and stir with a big spoon until heated through and suitably mashy.

Are you this hopeless usually?

If your child came to you and asked how they could reheat these potatoes to make mash with them... What would you tell them?

You can if you throw a dash of milk or cream into the bottom of the pan along with the butter. Heat until the butter melts then you will be able to mash it all into the potatoes.

Potatoes or cabbage leaves

Call it what you like, it doesnt matter, its meat layered in between carbs and very nice it would be either way (or cabbage if you're not using the carbs)

People are so rigid

It would blow peoples minds to know that in parts of Spain they make paella with pasta.

That's fideua, not paella.

Peppers? But it’s winter…

oh lol. Do you genuinely not buy and use peppers in the winter? What about tomatoes? If you restricted yourself to eating only what the UK could grow in season I think you'd be pretty bored.

How were you planning to heat them to serve them before you realised the lasagne sheets were missing?

OK I've read all the OP's posts and now I feel like I've smoked something illegal. WTF is going on?
Boiled potatoes with lasagne but no leafy greens because it's winter??????

Leafy greens to me means lettuce/salad, that and another posters suggestion of potato salad!
It’s snowing ffs!

Another thing that's baffling me (along with the potatoes with lasagne, the potatoes being cooked hours before they're needed, the assertion that it's 'weird to have pasta and potatoes but not lasagne', the inability of the OP to figure out how to make a meal from the ingredients she does have) is that if you're not feeling 100% OP, why on earth did you decide that lasagne was the meal to make?! I avoid doing that on days where I feel 110% because it is such a FAFF. Don't get me wrong, I love a lasagne, and will occasionally give in to the faff in order to have one, but surely when you're feeling ill, that is the perfect time to just have something really simple...?!

FOJN · 05/01/2026 15:47

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 15:40

Is it excess cheese then as well as excess carbs? Why did she do this??

I use cheese sauce in my "lasagne" too because cheese makes everything savory taste better. Dried oregano sprinkled over any cheese you're going to melt is good too.

I think boiled potatoes with anything is a bit unfashionable these days and they are particularly out of place with lasagne. If you're going to double carb your lasagne do it with garlic bread.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:47

I’ve taken on the suggestions, I will do the mince with mashed potato on top, then pour the cheese sauce over the top. Don’t know why but it seems a weird dish, no idea what to call it when Dh & Dd ask me

It's called dinner.

itsgettingweird · 05/01/2026 15:47

I’d serve the mince alongside the potato’s with the cheese sauce on top of the potatoes. (Like daphenoise spuds)

HelenHywater · 05/01/2026 15:47

I find this thread a little bit strange. OP make a pastitsio instead. Serve the potatoes alongside (if you must).

here's an example recipe for you https://www.mygreekdish.com/recipe/pastitsio/

ZebraPyjamas · 05/01/2026 15:47

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:42

But there’s a difference between a pasta dish and then potatoes on a plate and a slice of lasagna with a few potatoes on the side next to it, surely?! It just seems weird with the pasta dish. You also probably wouldn’t have a pasta dish with a plate of chips too, but a slice of lasagna with chips next to it is normal?!

But lasagne IS a pasta dish??

geekone · 05/01/2026 15:47

Have a look for macaroni lasagne on good food it’s ace just use any pasta. Then just eat the potatoes like you would or stick them in the oven.

Add some milk, leave that to heat then mash it.
Don't you add any fluid like milk or cream to mash?

Yes! Of course, heat the milk with it to heat it up, forgot, thank you 🙏

This has to be one of the most innocously insane threads I've seen in a long time, I'm actually weeping with laughter... OP, is it your first day on planet Earth or are you having us on?

Strange thread, I'm wondering if the OP has ever cooked a meal before? The concept of adding potatoes to lasagne is bizarre.

This is insane!!

Well, then you don’t know what a leafy green is. Broccoli is a leafy green. So are sprouts. So are many other winter veg. And you can also buy salad during winter too, if you want.

Kale or spinach are leafy greens.

Is everything you eat in winter hot?

ohyesido · 05/01/2026 15:49

Improvise. Layer with the other pasta

Leafy greens is lettuce/salad and it's perfect with lasagne all year round! Unlike buttery boiled potatoes which peaked in 1946 with some tinned sardines.

Also grilling a lasagna... surely it goes in the oven?

I never said grilling 😅
