Made the lasagna without the lasagna

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 13:26

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Use layers of sliced potatoes and call it moussaka

This.
It will be delicious.
A friend uses tortia's instead.
Or just add cooked pasta, mix it up, top with cheese, into the oven.

Now looking at the sad, dry boiled potatoes in the pan, how do I make it into mash as they are cold and the butter won’t melt or mash into it?

What a shit day 😂

Put some Milk in the pan and put them on a low heat. Add the butter, mash, eat or cool and save.

GlomOfNit · 05/01/2026 15:25

Layer the meaty sauce with cooked pasta that isn't lasagne if you want pasta. Layer it with a drained can of white beans like cannellini and the white sauce and make it healthier! Layer with the boiled potatoes, sliced (you put boiled potatoes in lasagna?). Loads of options.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:55

She added some of the grated cheese on top too and grilled it, some in the sauce, remainder on top

I need to know why the lasagne was grilled? It's usually baked in the oven so the cheese doesn't need the grill to melt and go golden. I hate to ask but are the pasta sheets being boiled prior to assembly and then the whole thing grilled to melt the cheese?

wishingonastar101 · 05/01/2026 15:26

If I called my mum to tell her I had a shit day because I couldn't make dinner she would laugh at me....

AppropriateAdult · 05/01/2026 15:31

In OP’s defence, I have been served lasagna with boiled or baked potatoes in a student canteen. But even at a tender age it always struck me as too carb-heavy.

TaraMySalata · 05/01/2026 15:31

Stuffed peppers! Do you have peppers? Slice the tops of four red bell peppers. Boil them for about ten minutes to make them a bit soft, or don’t bother if you don’t mind them a bit crunchy. Stand them up in a baking dish and spoon your bolognese sauce into the peppers . Then top with your cheese sauce and oven bake for maybe half a hour. Serve with potatoes and extra cheese sauce. Et voila (I normally serve with rice rather than potatoes, but I think this would work. If you have four bell peppers knocking about…)

Anonanonanonagain · 05/01/2026 15:31

@wishingonastar101 her mother is the reason she is in this mess to begin with...

Peppers? But it’s winter…

Purlant · 05/01/2026 15:34

I dread to think what’s in that ragu for the lasagne…

What the fuck is a tortia?

Please tell me you don’t mean tortilla? 🤣🤣

MissDoubleU · 05/01/2026 15:04

Why did you boil the potatoes 3 hours before you were going to be eating them anyway?? 😭

Yep, totally confused now. You were planning to serve on the side so would have heated before serving anyway. So just heat them the same way you were always planning to, then mash them?

(Microwave would be best).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/01/2026 15:36

Turn it into a shepherd’s pie with the potatoes, and freeze the cheese sauce for another day. Or just keep it in the fridge if you’ll be using it soon.

No need to be so mean/snooty.

Tortia is a reasonable enough phonetic spelling of the Spanish pronunciation of “tortilla”. It’s better than spelling it correctly but pronouncing it to rhyme with Atila as in The Hun.

Béchamel is a white sauce, sometimes called a roux. It’s flour, butter and milk, flavoured with a little nutmeg. I add a tiny bit of mustard to mine.

It‘s the base of a homemade cheese sauce, which you make by adding a hard, sharp grated cheese to (Cheddar works very well).

As we‘re debating terms, I‘d learnt that cottage pie and shepherd’s pie are nearly the same thing, but the former was made with beef mince and the latter with lamb mince.

Noooo! the roux is just the butter and flour, before you add the milk.

I'm a bit late to the party OP so you've probably resolved this. But you can just use dried spaghetti instead of lasagne sheets.

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 15:40

AirborneElephant · 05/01/2026 15:09

No, OP has clarified that she puts cheese into the sauce as well as on top. Heathen.

Is it excess cheese then as well as excess carbs? Why did she do this??

God I saw the title and thought my Mum had found MN! She once memorably made lasagna with no sheets, and texted what she thought was her friend - who had previously had to serve bolognese with rice as she had no pasta in at all - except being not very techy and using a new phone, she didn't text her friend but rather the first number in her contacts list...which was the local taxi rank 😂 I still wish we could have seen their faces when the weird robot voice read out "hello Jill, just made lasagna with shells and thought of you!"

GlomOfNit · 05/01/2026 15:41

Well, I'm a foodie of a sort, and whenever I make lasagna I do make the béchamel sauce cheesy 😂 but hey, it's MY bastardised lasagna and while I apologise to any genuine Italians on this thread, I'm very much NOT calling it 'Glom's authentic Italian nonna's lasagna'. I just like my white sauce to be of the cheesy variety. I put a tin of tomatoes in 'bolognese' sauce too ...

I'm still waiting for Waitrose to apologise to what they've done to Portuguese cakes and still call them 'Portuguese'.

OP, I fear many many posters have said what I'm about to - but I'd cut my losses at this stage, mash the potatoes (of COURSE you can do that if they've gone cold, just add a tiny bit of milk and heat gently, and a shitload of butter and seasoning. Layer meaty sauce with cheesy sauce, heap mash on top, fork a pattern on it, oven. Call it whatever you like, it sounds the right sort of thing for cold weather. Smile

Minjou · 05/01/2026 15:11

Turn the pan back on?

Have you ever cooked anything before?

You can’t just put potatoes in the pan directly onto a hot stove? The pan will burn, they were originally boiled in water 😬

OP posts:
Hoolahoophop · 05/01/2026 15:43

Why are you still trying to use all the stuff.

The potatoes can wait till tomorrow, or the cheese sauce, or the meat sauce.

Just pick something you want to eat and stick it on a plate.

This thread is genius OP 👏👏🤣

I'm calling my mum and What a shit day! made me laugh.

It's such a simple thread but you've managed to wind everyone up, the double carb pearl clutchers, the pendants, the leafy green brigade and the SPAG police!
Brilliant!

FOJN · 05/01/2026 15:14

OK I've read all the OP's posts and now I feel like I've smoked something illegal. WTF is going on?
Boiled potatoes with lasagne but no leafy greens because it's winter??????

I think OP is confusing leafy greens with salad.

@Brainfogtothemax leafy greens would be ones that are cooked- kale, non-baby spinach, spring greens, cabbage, cavolo nero, that sort of thing. Tenderstem broccoli would also do the same job, nutritionally.

Ponderingwindow · 05/01/2026 15:44

Just turn it into baked ziti

no idea what you do with the potatoes. I suppose if you were going to put them in a lasagna, you could put them in with any other pasta.

You do know you can cook things in a pan that aren’t boiled in water don’t you?
