Made the lasagna without the lasagna

What to do?

Just prepped for dinner, did all the mince with tomatoes, onion etc and made the cheese sauce, boiled some potatoes and went to get the lasagna sheets and don’t have any.
Not feeling 100% so cba going to the shops, how can I make it into a proper meal? I have some pasta I could use instead, but what about the potatoes? Save them for tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Send your DH or DS to the shop?

faial · 05/01/2026 15:10

Just mash the spuds (use the microwave or oven to warm them if they're too cold now) and have them with the mince mixture you've made. You don't need pasta AND potatoes in the same meal, that's far too much carbohydrate.

Now looking at the sad, dry boiled potatoes in the pan, how do I make it into mash as they are cold and the butter won’t melt or mash into it?

What a shit day 😂

Turn the pan back on?

Have you ever cooked anything before?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 05/01/2026 15:11

Just chuck the mince over the potatoes and call them dirty spuds

ManyPigeons · 05/01/2026 15:12

What do you need potatoes for with lasagne? They don’t go in there…

just mix pasta with the ragu and top with the bechamel and bake it.

Blarn · 05/01/2026 15:13

Every now and then thread annoys me nearly as much as the bloody Bosworth one. This one is very close to that list.

I found myself bored of pasta completely a while ago and a few times made a ragu and cheese sauce which I then layered on top of very crispy new potatoes roasted with rosemary and garlic, then gave it a quick grill. It was really lovely.

moresneakers · 05/01/2026 15:13

I’ve never heard of lasagna with potatoes?!! But yeah just stick the potatoes on top and do cottage pie.

Tana433 · 05/01/2026 15:14

I have always made lasagne using cheese sauce and also sprinkled cheese over the top for the last 5/10 mins of cooking. I have never served potatoes with it although sometimes we will have garlic bread. Also i have always called my shepherds pie 'shepherds' pie although it is made using beef mince not lamb and is technically a 'cottage' pie. I really cant bring myself to care that i might be doing it wrong at this point in my life. Both dishes are super tasty so.........

cooldarkroom · 05/01/2026 15:14

Cant you make potatoes into mash & serve with the gloop?
or make mash , civer in fridge & skittle fry in patties tomorrow?
Cut into chunks & intersperse with gloop?

FOJN · 05/01/2026 15:14

OK I've read all the OP's posts and now I feel like I've smoked something illegal. WTF is going on?
Boiled potatoes with lasagne but no leafy greens because it's winter??????

soupyspoon · 05/01/2026 15:16

Brainfogtothemax · 05/01/2026 14:55

She added some of the grated cheese on top too and grilled it, some in the sauce, remainder on top

Its the Bridge of Sighs for her. No mistake

Add some milk, leave that to heat then mash it.
Don't you add any fluid like milk or cream to mash?

RampantIvy · 05/01/2026 15:19

Are you an inexperienced cook @Brainfogtothemax ?
You could crush the potatoes and put them on top of the meat sauce, brush with melted butter or oil and they will crisp up nicely in the oven to give a crispy golden topping. Serve with a vegetable of your choice.

Use the cheese sauce with macaroni or other pasta shape for tomorrow's dinner.

Strange thread, I'm wondering if the OP has ever cooked a meal before? The concept of adding potatoes to lasagne is bizarre.

Rookie93 · 05/01/2026 15:20

Another one for using home made pancakes. Have used them before with lasagna filling and filled the pancakes instead of canaloni. Same white sauce & some cheese spread over the top and then baked, yum yum.

Inthezonenow · 05/01/2026 15:21

This entire thread has made me laugh out loud, but in a much more wholesome way than most of the stuff on AIBU. Comedy gold OP. It’s only a matter of time (or maybe has already happened) before somebody says “It all goes down the same way in any case”.

Also grilling a lasagna... surely it goes in the oven?

Lasagna does have cheese in it but they use ricotta, mozzarella and Parmesan not just normal bog standard cheese. The white sauce isn’t made with any cheese at all otherwise it changes from béchamel sauce to a cheese sauce and they are two different things. But if your ragù is rich enough then you won’t need the cheese. I’m baffled how you can think potatoes with lasagna is perfectly normal but the idea of putting them with any other type of pasta dish is weird.

Ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan are just bog standard cheeses in Italy

When the Italian wants to use a 'fancy cheese', they reach for the Black Bomber or smoked double gloucester. Or even Lild mild cheddar. They love the stuff.

Trueloveneverdies · 05/01/2026 15:22

Cook your alternative pasta shapes, stir through your meat sauce, place in a baking dish then pour your cheese sauce over and bake in the oven.

Let the potatoes go cold, stick them in the fridge. Fry them another day and serve with some crispy bacon.

Now you have two dinners instead of one!

ManyPigeons · 05/01/2026 15:22

Op just freeze the potatoes for another day they’re unnecessary tubers!

No veg. It's winter.

But the potatoes were always going to be cold if you cooked them several hours in advance?

Qwerty21 · 05/01/2026 15:23

I genuinely don't think I've ever read anything and insane as defending lasagna with boiled potatoes whilst insisting that pasta with them is weird, they are both blinking pasta dishes just different shapes 😆 I genuinely felt this was a wind up but you're extremely insistent it's not @Brainfogtothemax . Fwiw I add cheese to my white sauce (making it a cheese sauce, not bechamel, cos you know, cheese) when I make lasagna cos it's way tastier. And you need to reheat the potatoes in the microwave for a bit then you can mash them fine 👌🏻
