Why do we use cutlery in restaurants

Nannyogganny · 02/01/2026 20:48

I was thinking this recently

Those knives, forks and spoons have been INSIDE thousands of other people's mouths.

I was starting to get disgusted by the thought. I think it is such a weird practice.

I have now bought my own cheap plastic disposable cutlery, and bring it with me

@Nannyogganny do you snog your partner? Think about all the germs in their mouth….

Alwayseatingpringles · 02/01/2026 23:07

It’s actually really weird that I’ve never thought of this before and now probably won’t be able to not think about it when out 😩

Thanks op!

Bleachedjeans · 02/01/2026 23:07

You probably look crazy like Jack Nicholson in the film where Helen Hunt is the waitress… on second thoughts, the post could be a wind up.

Piss on seats is caused by people hovering. Why don't they wipe it off after?

I don't know but it doesn't change the fact that there's usually urine there before you arrive...

chaosmaker · 02/01/2026 23:08

I snogged an entire pub of people one new year's eve bacd in the 90's. I have a wicked immune system :D

FishPie2 · 02/01/2026 23:08

My friend and I sat in a restaurant and watched a bored waiter take a fork out of the drawer and proceed to clean out his nails with it then threw it back in.
She went up and asked to see the manager and insisted that all the cutlery was removed and cleaned.
It held up the setting up of the rest of the tables but she stood there until it was done. Good job we had seen him do it.

why can't the lazy idiots lift the sit first

Women don't tend to sit on the bare porcelain. But some women hover and cause the piss on the seat issue... and leave it sometimes too.

HisNotHes · 02/01/2026 23:09

There are these things called dishwashers - they get things clean and sanitise at high temperatures.
Plastic cutlery is an environmental disaster. Take your own reusable cutlery if you must insist on being weird.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/01/2026 23:09

MagicStarrz · 02/01/2026 23:03

But who wants to sit on someone else's bodily fluids? Gross.

So, no sex then? 😂

lifeonmars100 · 02/01/2026 23:09

Somebody must be very bored this evening...

Anyone who puts their cutlery inside their mouth has such shockingly bad table manners that they should not be allowed out in public.

Minor exemption for small spoons used to eat mousse or similar.

Give over - that's just pratty nonsense by people who want to cosplay being superior to other people. Anyway, as soon as the majority follow any social rule, the elitists change their behaviour to keep differentiating themselves from the lower classes. In the past, people used to brag about eating meat when it was a luxury for the majority, nowadays, people brag about never eating meat. Plus ca change.....

but if they hover-and-piss but have raised the seat, it - amazingly - doesn't go all over the seat

CointreauVersial · 02/01/2026 23:13

Honestly, do you people not have immune systems?

Funnywonder · 02/01/2026 23:14

Why disposable plastic? There are plenty of stainless steel travel sets. Or just bring a set from your cutlery drawer in a small pencil case. No need to take it to extremes …😜

Mind you, I suppose there’s an outside chance you might get stopped on the way out and accused of stealing.

On second thoughts, probably best to stay at home.

ManyPigeons · 02/01/2026 23:14

Scalpels do surgery on dozens of people too… they’re sterilised

CotswoldsCamilla · 02/01/2026 23:15

I often give my cutlery a wipe on the napkin. Depends on the restaurant. I also wipe remote controls in hotels.

The actual blades are disposable, but the handle isn't.

But there are countless other instruments that touch more than skin and a few fat layers.
Bowel clamps anyone? I am sure OP will provide her own plastic ones.

Taking their own pen.

Remote controls in hotel rooms are germ factories.
I would put them in a transparent plastic bag ever since I read a study about what has been found on them - every kind of bodily fluid.

Chiefangel · 02/01/2026 23:19

Why do you even eat out at restaurants if they are so unhygienic.
I would just stay at home if I were you.
Do you live alone because what about other family members using the same cutlery, and plates and bowls and cups and glasses and omg the toilet as well. The mind boggles.

hmdxm1 · 02/01/2026 23:21

Haha as much as I’m sure OP is being ripped a new one I do sort of understand the thought process, I thought about this recently when thinking about hotels and mattresses, I would NEVER buy a second hand mattress Envy and yet I stay in hotels…

Havent resorted to bringing my own bedsheets or mattress to a hotel yet though, for clarity.

sittingonabeach · 02/01/2026 23:24

How often have you been ill from using cutlery in a restaurant? What about at friends’ houses, do you bring your own there too?

HopeSpringsEternally · 02/01/2026 23:26

Nannyogganny · 02/01/2026 20:52

I disagree. I worked in some restaurants when I was younger.

In some of those restaurants. the cutlery got a very quick rinse in the sink

They weren't washed well.

It sounds like you have mysophobia - might be worthwhile getting some therapy.
