Dh won’t ice skate

Dd, 7 desperate to go ice skating (has only done it when little on a kids ice rink, holding onto one of the penguin things.
Now she’s a little older, there’s a bigger rink nearby at Christmas. She always asks Dh to go with her and he says no.
i do so many things with Dd, I don’t want to
ice skate, but I feel bad for Dd
Should she try on her own and we watch? I know she would probably need help, all I see is dads helping their kids

Would your Dh do it?

Aibu?

So you don’t want to do it either?

Sirzy · 02/01/2026 19:47

If neither of you want to go then it’s fine to say no.

I tried ice skating once - never again!

Namechangedndnf · 02/01/2026 19:48

Can you sign her up for lessons? Even a block of four helps a lot.

3luckystars · 02/01/2026 19:48

No, and do it yourself if you are so enthused about it.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 02/01/2026 19:48

If neither of you want to go, that’s fine, but I’m not sure why you’re making this a dad problem?

vanillalattes · 02/01/2026 19:48

Does your DH even know how to ice skate?

YABU. You go if you're so enthusiastic about it.

TheatricalLife · 02/01/2026 19:49

Agree with lessons instead. If she is really keen, let her go for it.

MissAmbrosia · 02/01/2026 19:49

Christ i wouldn't do it either!

tinytemper66 · 02/01/2026 19:49

I broke my leg on a school trip. I was 52 and the teacher. 🤦🏻‍♀️

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 02/01/2026 19:49

So it’s ok you don’t want to but not ok your DH doesn’t want to? 🙄

Christmaseree · 02/01/2026 19:50

Book lessons and take turns who takes her.

RandomMess · 02/01/2026 19:50

I only ice skate with the penguin and I used to be able to ice skate ok.

MrTwisterHasABlister · 02/01/2026 19:50

I hate ice skating, it scares me so, I’d say no too. People are allowed to say no to their kids.

Moltenpink · 02/01/2026 19:50

Is he a pro ice skater or something?

HearMeSnore · 02/01/2026 19:50

It’s not for everybody. You don’t want to do it, so you can’t really complain that he doesn’t either. My DH did it once when DD was pestering to go. She didn’t enjoy it much and he nearly broke his neck. I’d say it’s not worth pushing for.

Twinkylightsg · 02/01/2026 19:51

Tbf I get you OP. I do all the outings and activities with kiss. However, I am hyperactive and constantly need to be doing one thing it another. However, if there is something I feel extremely uncomfortable with then husband steps up and does it with us or on his own.

Alwayseatingpringles · 02/01/2026 19:51

PennyLaneisinmyheartandmysoul · 02/01/2026 19:47

So you don’t want to do it either?

No, but as I said, I do practically every other activity with her, it’s the one thing i’d prefer not to

The only time I went ice skating with mine, I didn’t progress from shuffling along whilst clinging on to the barrier. Terrifying. Of all the activities you’ve decided he should do with her, what on earth made you pick ice skating?

MMXXVI · 02/01/2026 19:52

My partner did with our children, but then so did I.

If neither of you want to go on the ice, then could you book your daughter some lessons? I had lessons when I was a child because my parents wouldn’t do it, although they wouldn’t do anything and it was miserable. It turned out well though as I got quite good.

ThatHappyBlueCritic · 02/01/2026 19:52

I can’t ice skate but luckily my husband can so he takes our girls. If he couldn’t though then I would pay for lessons.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 02/01/2026 19:52

Alwayseatingpringles · 02/01/2026 19:51

No, but as I said, I do practically every other activity with her, it’s the one thing i’d prefer not to

So ask DH to take her to a different activity and you do the ice skating then?

vanillalattes · 02/01/2026 19:52

Alwayseatingpringles · 02/01/2026 19:51

No, but as I said, I do practically every other activity with her, it’s the one thing i’d prefer not to

And your DH doesn't want to do it either. Your wishes don't override his.

If the issue is that he doesn't do anything with DD, then you need to tackle that separately.

MargaretThursday · 02/01/2026 19:52

At our local rinks they have penguins for children that age to hold on to. I never needed to go on the ice with the dc. They loved going. I used to get them a penguin to share for the first hour, and by then they had got their balance and could go alone.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 02/01/2026 19:53

Lessons are a good idea. My twin dds really fancied it but I have “the fear” as I had a nasty break after slipping on ice not on a rink just putting the bins out so I dodge activities that come with a high risk of falls. They do lessons before the main session at my local place then they can stay on the ice to practice.

MyUmberOrca · 02/01/2026 19:53

If you are going to take a child who can't skate you need to be a passable standard. I underestimated how much they tend to grab you often with no warning!
