Disclaimer: Not 100% serious at all 😏

Mine would be to ban repeat offenders who don't return to the threads they start.

A mahooosive multicoloured sticky banner reminding OPs to include their kid's ages in the opening post, as it's nearly always relevant.

What would you add/remove/change?

OP posts:

Cross out any rude or goady or unpleasant replies, GIVE THE REASONS WHY UNDER THE CROSSED OUT COMMENT, and give differing time-outs to the posters eg three crossings out equals a week with no posting ability. Five crossings out equals…etc.

All the people in time out can be given one board to post, where they each get their own thread to say why they’re angry or horrible, and we (the nicer posters) can give them little pep talks, or mini counselling sessions, make the community feel stronger, and they learn how they have upset posters, or why their comment was hurtful or whatever.

Those people who read the OP and give their opinion without bothering to read realising that the OP was 15 years ago and the child concerned has now grown up, got a job, and is married with their own children, those people should be given a dunce label next to their name.

Free chocolate digestives for all.

I agree with making it compulsory for people to confirm they have actually read the OP before posting, and would extend that to also having read OP's updates. Several posters ask for clarification, OP provides it then ten pages in, someone pops up asking for it all over again 🙄

In that vein, I would also make people confirm they're aware which board they're on. It's so annoying when people chime in on the Christmas board with snarky comments about "how dare you mention anything to do with Christmas in August" type crap. And I agree with PPs on S&B when people trot out "just wear what you want, why do you care?" Check the board before being a dick!

Yes to this, it used to happen (maybe still does) on the Mumsnetters Without Children board and was sometimes distressing.

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 31/12/2025 23:30

I'd get rid of the reactions completely.
I'd ban users who post DS2 to mean 2 year old son, rather than DS (2) which is how we did it when it was all fields around here.

The way my eyebrows flew up the first time I saw someone using it incorrectly and thought DD11 meant she had at least 11 kids.

SquashPenguin · 01/01/2026 03:41

The acronyms. So bloody pointless and irritating.

It would be impossible to quote an entire post just to write a reply.

X123x321X · 01/01/2026 04:08

It should be possible to quote part of a post.

Another vote for banning quoting the OP’s op. So annoying.

Bjorkdidit · 01/01/2026 06:50

Ban the contrived AIBU posts. Eg AIBU to ask where I should go on holiday? Yes YABU, there's a perfectly serviceable holidays section, use that.

Lock threads that end up with dozens of posters saying the same thing. What is the point of hundreds of people all saying 'I think you should do X'?

Tigerpalm777 · 01/01/2026 07:10

Tocsin · 01/01/2026 00:20

I would be reluctant to give it up completely as I genuinely like talking to other enthusiasts about clothes. The difficulty is that 95% of S&B posters do not care about clothes, until they have a wedding or interview to dress for. Then they insist £50 thrown at John Lewis will turn them into Hailey Bieber. By Saturday.

Mandatory severe admonishment from MNHQ for posters who expect me to tell them what’s in the shops in their local High St / shopping mall.

Tocsin yes S&B topic is perhaps trying to do too many things at once.

Maybe there needs to be a Fashion Forward topic for the Fashionistas to have serious fashion chat, and a What Do I Wear? topic for those seeking an outfit for Aunty Mavis’s wedding?

On the whole, I love Mumsnet just as it is, but I would like them to make it so one has an option to return automatically to either the last post you made, if you are commenting on a thread, or the newest post if you are just reading without posting.

I’m probably being terribly thick and there may well be a slick way to do the above, but since certain changes were made to the site a while back, I can’t seem to navigate threads as easily, and usually spend a few minutes flipping the thread or orienting myself on the correct page before being able to find my place!

MissNowt · 01/01/2026 07:20

I wish they’d bring back the ability to press on a word & look it up. They used to have it but it disappeared after the updates/improvements a few months ago. Was so handy for acronyms & abbreviations too IYSWIM.

Tocsin · 01/01/2026 07:44

That’s an idea, @Tigerpalm777.

But isn’t your Bookmark facility working?

I’m on a thread that regularly runs up to 1000 posts - it would be impossible to navigate if I wasn’t automatically taken to the last post I’d read.

Tocsin · 01/01/2026 07:45

Ignore. Wrong thread.

arcticpandas · 01/01/2026 07:58

Laugh emoji back! Also, I would put in an automatic reminder those starting threads;

"Please keep in mind that real people are trying to help you- so update your thread and say thank you. "

Heard of copy and paste? 😉

It's not the same as the clearly delineated quote box (with editable text) that forums tend to have.

DappledThings · 01/01/2026 08:08

Employ some kind of tech that displays all measurements in contemporary format. If you really want to keep using imperial weights like it's 80 years ago you can but it should be automatically translated to metric and the imperial hidden underneath for anyone who wants to click extra to see it.

I sometimes look at some of the weight lose threads but I can't join ones that aren't in Kg because I have no concept of what lbs and stones mean.

StarlightLady · 01/01/2026 08:26

Make all threads lock and not allow further posts after a certain period of time, perhaps 3 months.

NotDarkGothicMama · 01/01/2026 08:27

Bring the laugh emoji back.

Otherwise, I don't think I'd make any real changes. They've already implemented the long-running requests people really wanted, e.g. the edit button, and I don't want the forums turning into Reddit. I like that MN has its own unique style, acronyms and target audience. It irks me when posters moan about the ads too - pay for premium then!

HavingABlether · 01/01/2026 08:33

Get people who post in AIBU for traffic, put them in stocks, and have folk pelt them with rotting vegetables until they promise not to do it again. If we cared about your query about inheriting a toenail from the ghost of Kim Woodburne or whatever, we'd go to the haunted detritus board. But we don't. So stop flooding my feed with drivel.

And, as PP said, those who quote OP. We didn't think you were replying to the funny man who lives in your attic, Barbara. You probably sign off texts with your whole name.

@arcticpandas
Are you too lazy to copy

But with quote, youre taking the whole thing without any edits. If I copy and paste, I can change what I am replying to.

@arcticpandas was not this rude, I made it up.

LlynTegid · 01/01/2026 08:36

I'd change the colour scheme. Blue and white is not a colour I like, and given the MN HQ is near to Arsenal, am surprised it was chosen.

SharonEllis · 01/01/2026 08:42

Bring back the laugh emoji!

Ddog. Instant ban. WTAF its longer than typing 'dog'.

Ireolu · 01/01/2026 08:43

Ignore user option/button.
Lol emoji back.

As a Spurs fan who hates the Gooners, blue and white is fine. Grin
I would bring back the laugh emoji, I really miss it. I've been using the thanks hands to thank people for making me laugh! If mods were more on top of people being arseholes, it wouldn't have needed removing.

Mookie81 · 01/01/2026 08:46

A week ban for anyone who comes onto the S&B board to declare wanting to look good or caring about your appearance is ridiculous.
It's not- if you're someone who isn't interested in fashion/makeup/skincare, piss off to another board.
