Scratchcard Win

MissLead · 21/12/2025 15:19

So yesterday we had our annual pre-Xmas family meal (my brother, sister partners and kids).

every year we have done this I’ve bought everyone a scratchcard as a bit of fun.

BIL won £50k on his card yesterday and is not going to share it!

I think he should!!!!

And you've just proved why you don't deserve a share of BILs fortune! Hope you have a "great" Christmas!

Er yes? Isn’t swapping cracker gifts part of the fun ( even if they end up in the bin Boxing Day).

You can’t swap fifty grand for a non winning scratch card!

Edited

I never suggested you could.

It’s why I think it’s weird people wouldn’t share at least part of the winnings though.

ScorchingEgg · 25/12/2025 14:26

There’s zero obligation on his part. Be happy for him!

ArthurTheBadger · 27/12/2025 18:03

It is exactly why buying scratch cards is a daft idea. You (unknowingly) gave him a gift worth £50k. Your choice. Live with it.

Errahstop · 27/12/2025 18:47

It's his win. End of. If it was me I would probably buy something very nice for the purchaser but not sure I'd be splitting it out among everyone.

If you got one of those tiny decks of cards in your cracker, you could give all the spades to your sister in law. Or all the Phillips screwdrivers in a tiny tool set.

Fliesinmyeyes · 28/12/2025 01:43

I would have pretended I'd won nothing and pretend to dispose of the card! But that's just me!😀

Filmouse · 28/12/2025 07:20

I too do this every year and we have just discussed this very scenario and said we would give away 10%.on a big win .to each but we hadn't thought of the implications of a big win tol now.

But did everybody resolutely agree, or was it maybe just the general consensus amongst some of the people there?

Even so, anybody can say anything about what they would do if they won a load of money; what they do do when they win big is often very, very different indeed.

Filmouse · 28/12/2025 07:34

Really its up to them if they share win or not at the end of the day .

mamaduckbone · 28/12/2025 07:58

I've just asked Dh and he said no, he wouldn't share.
I think if it were me I'd take everyone on holiday / buy a nice gift.
Obviously if you had made an agreement beforehand that would be different but unfortunately you didn't so you're just going to have to suck it up!

Motherbear44 · 28/12/2025 10:44

Absolutely too late to help the OP. I never play scratch cards, could the cards be played as a group. Scratch a number and pass it on. It would be an interactive activity - and clear that any prizes are owned by the group,

Darker · 28/12/2025 10:51

Love that idea, @Motherbear44 .

This is what we did, tbf I got the idea from the lottery’s advert which has this exact thing but played to music so kinda like musical scratch cards

So he's horribly selfish and mean for keeping all of it.
You're horribly selfish and mean for only giving them a derisory token amount and keeping most of it for yourself.
Somebody else who wins and says "there are 8 of us here, so I'll split it equally 8 ways" is horribly selfish and mean for taking a whole eighth just for themselves, as they don't have any kids; whereas the others there have 1/3/5 kids (and 2 dogs) to support and share the good fortune with, and they can only work part-time because of that, so they deserve a much greater share to make it 'fair' - not to mention somebody else in the family/friendship group who wanted to be there but had to work/was ill/couldn't get a babysitter Smile

Me too. People are fucking nuts about money and it brings out the worst envy in them. There is no way I would have been in that situation and let it slip that I’d won 50k.

I would have put it in my pocket and kept my mouth shut.

Filmouse · 28/12/2025 18:12

Yes its a conscious decision I will be probably giving this less now.

Ah now you point it out - I think I saw the advert. I wondered where I got the idea from.

I am the sort of person who can play wordle at half past midnight and play again with my morning coffee - having absolutely no idea what the solution was!

Well the OP will probably be really chuffed her selfish, jealous frothing has made it into a daily paper! Personally I'd cringe with embarrassment, but each to their own!

I'm perfectly fine thank you "hun".
Other than finding it odd that you still haven't answered the two questions you've been asked several times though?
