Tree fairy

Every year I float the idea of a Christmas fairy to top the tree. DH and DCs all claim that a star is the ornament that should be used. We have both. AIBU to think that a fairy is THE CORRECT tree topper?

I always place a Santa on the top of our tree - but then l’m not religious, so having a star or angel wouldn’t make much sense.

Horses7 · 11/12/2025 20:08

Team fairy here but my mum had the coloured glass spire.

OneBrightCrow · 11/12/2025 20:09

We have a star, not for Bethlehem etc. more because angels or fairies can look a bit creepy sometimes.

my MIL has a massive fairy monstrosity that looks like one of those weird toilet roll covers. Nope.

Echlefecker · 11/12/2025 20:33

We have an angel of the massive monstrosity variety. She.wears a crown we got from the tower of London gift shop. I love her, she sets the tone

Misswright88 · 11/12/2025 20:41

We always had a fairy on the tree when I was a child in the early 90’s. I have gone with this for my own tree! I wonder if the name fairy/angel is used interchangeably.

Vaxtable · 11/12/2025 20:42

Fairy is correct

aCatCalledFawkes · 11/12/2025 20:43

We have an angel that I had years before the kids were born.

Sendinghugs · 11/12/2025 20:45

It’s an angel here!

I’ve always had a fairy since childhood and I’m 67. Today i have a fairy and a star. The star is a tree topper and the fairy is just below

BackOfTheMum5net · 11/12/2025 20:50

I recall a children’s song, “I’m the fairy on top of the Christmas tree, but Christmas time is sad for me, no one takes notice of the fairy on the Christmas tree” - proof to the doubters that she’s not an angel!

Amiable · 11/12/2025 21:22

We have a Santa topper 🤷‍♀️

Makingpeace · 11/12/2025 21:24

We have a snowman on the top of our tree.

maureen17 · 11/12/2025 22:12

christmas trees are not symbolic of the the birth of Jesus so I'm for sticking a fairy on your tree for magic. My angels and star are displayed over my nativity for Jesus.
but I totally agree with your choice and whatever rocks your boat.

Washingupdone · 11/12/2025 22:17

Many, many years ago, when I was young, we used to have an angel at the top of the tree.

Tarkan · 11/12/2025 22:19

We had a disco ball last year and have a rubber duck this year. 🙈

Ilovesunshine22 · 11/12/2025 22:37

We have a angel would never have a star

mygrandchildrenrock · 11/12/2025 22:40

Always an angel. This one is about 15 years old now and too big for the tree. We used to live in a Victorian house and have a massive tree, where this angel fitted perfectly. I can’t bring myself to get a new one when this one is in such good condition.
Maybe I’ll have to move to a big house again!

I had bought a cute gonk tree topper this year but my 2yo absolutely refused and said we had to have a star so I feel your pain
My gonk is now sat sadly awaiting another shot next year

peafritterandcurrysauce · 11/12/2025 23:45

A fairy on the tree growing up. The first year we were married I dressed a little rubber doll my sister had given me in material left over from making my wedding dress. She’s sat in the top of the tree every year since and we were married fifty years this year. I love her but sadly every one else in our family is totally indifferent and have frequently suggested buying a new angel or a star.
(We do have two other smaller trees with angels on though)

Originally, 16th century it would have been an apple and candle to represent Eden.
Then it was a depiction of a baby Jesus, then a star in the 18th century and Angels in 1848. Fairy's around 1950/60's.
I suppose correct would probably mean most traditional? If so... star

cornflakecrunchie · 12/12/2025 01:28

I've really enjoyed seeing everyone's fairy / star / gonk / whatever!
I love how each family grows their own traditions. :-)

Okiedokie123 · 12/12/2025 01:30

A star or an angel. Fairies don’t belong on Christmas trees.

MsGinaLinetti · 12/12/2025 07:42

Wow. Sorry, haven't kept up with thread very well. I think I might rename the fairy an angel to give more weight to my position when it comes to the discussion this weekend.
loving the posts and pics.
