I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

I think it was most likely occasional use for work / online meetings / vlogging and the wallpaper is to give a homely background. Or to cover a botch job with the plasterboards! Or someone had a hobby space up there and liked the wallpaper - it certainly warms up a dark space.

I think it's far less likely that someone would wallpaper a "secret" prison cell, punishment room, or porn studio with such distinctive wallpaper. And I wish I could understand why posters aren't calling the police about every nook and cranny in their attics that "could" once have been boarded. Do you need wallpaper, carpet and chairs to use a space for nefarious purposes?

Right. Should we all be calling the police about our “weird” attics?

Burn the house down quick !

The points you raise are what I don’t get. Plus the actual space looks tiny. If it’s for storage why bother putting in wall paper.

Dunno.

I don't think you could use it for anything practical beyond hiding. I did think maybe it would be a grow, which might explain the lights. But no need for wallpaper and hauling water up there would be a pain.

I guess it is possible that it was actually done by two people. One built a room for storage (why you would want a storage room with such an inaccessible entrance who knows) and then another came along and decided to repurpose it as a some sort of extra room before discovering it was totally impractical and abandoned it half way through. There are often simple explanations for stuff that looks weird.

I guess we will never know. The boarded off bit on the other side is more strange to me though as it is hard to imagine any motivation for that. I would want to check in there just in case someone had done something really stupid like removed the W truss to make the space bigger and then not propped the roof up properly. I've seen that done before.

matchacatcha · 09/12/2025 13:18

It looks like a sex chamber. The triangular aspect with legs open. I wouldn't sit on the chair if I were you!

Sugargliderwombat · 09/12/2025 13:20

Sorry but am I right thta you have another entire space that you can't see?! How have you not torn this down? There could be another horror film scene there.

Whatafustercluck · 09/12/2025 13:30

Someone has definitely been restrained and kept in that chair for long periods. It has mad woman in the attic vibes, especially with that wallpaper. In fact, look up The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Or it could just be a place for a world weary mum to sit, think, read and Google stuff, away from her baying family. I try this most days, but everyone follows me around the house instead. I move to an empty room, and suddenly it is full again.

That room has suddenly grown on me... even the wallpaper.

tonyhawks23 · 09/12/2025 13:30

People didn't vlog in the days of that wallpaper and magazines!

I doubt it's sinister, but just in case it is then it might be worth asking around and seeing what you can find out. If you inspect the space around it all further, and find other things that seem sinister, then maybe you should consult the authorities. I think that chair is what they used to call a director's chair and they were very fsshionable back in the 2980s ( i think ,not 100% sure but i think maybe !!). I do think the lighting is a bit over the top for a den though. Was the chair in that position when you found it or did you put it in that position ?

Have you asked your new neighbours about it ? They probably know what it's for

Could just be old rolls of wallpaper - though actually if you search polka dot yellow wallpaper, there's still quite a market for it. Magazines sound very interesting in themselves!

I'd have been over the moon with this space as a tween / teenager. If they had kids sharing rooms, this would be a lovely little resource.

You don’t have teens do you? @Oftenaddled

because the best teen hangouts at home involves the bare minimum of effort. So hauling down the ladder, and climbing up to a pokey hole to get up there…. Nah, can’t be arsed as well as not close to the kitchen.

best thing I ever did to tempt my teens to hang at home with friends was a have a large garden room built with super fast WiFi, a fridge, heating and sound proof!

BadgernTheGarden · 09/12/2025 13:53

Children's camp?

nomas · 09/12/2025 14:01

They should have made it into this cosy attic room

No, but as a teen I dreamt of having my own little space and decorating it. I'm sure parents would prefer that they find a hangout with minimal investment needed, but maybe - especially during the pandemic - that wasn't an option.

Anyway, teenager is just one of many innocent possibilities.

I read that booka few months ago! Can't for the life of me remember the name of it,or who the author was though!

The Dream Home by TM Logan!
I also read that book a few months ago, still had to Google to find the title though 🙈 hopefully doesn't turn out to be quite so sinister for OP though... 😬

But it's not a concealed space. It hasn't even got a fourth wall! OP misnamed it.

It was completely concealed - it is open now because they opened it up after discovery

OP doesn't say that - she says it has a low wall you have to step over, which is probably just a strut. They didn't open it. It is just a nook in the corner.

confused

Strawberriesandpears · 09/12/2025 17:19

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2025 17:19

wank cave

room to keep unwed preg woman

various filming of sexual natures - hopefully not kids

or an innocent work space

Could you be more specific?

The only opening up/revealing they have done so far is just going into the loft, stepping over a low wall and switching a light on.

I got confused because she said she entered through small hatch at the beginning
