I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

My last house was a 1930's pre war house with a cellar space running under the house, it wasnt a proper cellar, it was about 4 foot high. When I was exploring I found a disassembled Anderson shelter down there. I donated it to the local museum. I was tempted to set it up in my garden but it would have involved a lot of digging.

Our house was built in around 1934, we still have a complete Anderson shelter in our garden, complete with horseshoe on the door.

I think someone's had a go at a DIY loft conversion and then realised it just won't work so given up

GasPanic · 09/12/2025 11:18

The boarded off space c is a lot more weird.

People normally want access to the entire loft to store stuff/check for leaks etc.

To board off about 1/4 of your loft space vertically doesn't make much sense.

My guess is one of the boards is a panel that can be removed because no one sensible would seal off a space like that. There is practically nothing to gain from doing it.

MarvellousMonsters · 09/12/2025 11:20

The wallpaper and set up doesn’t look spooky to me, it looks like it’s been used to make videos or something, it’s not cosy enough to be a reading nook.

I also want to know what’s in the other boarded up section though….

No, the op says there is a small door which is the bit painted green but it can only be accessed through the crawl space to the side which has planks of wood over unboarded loft space to get to the green door. The space wasn't seen until the sky man uncovered it. The other side is completed boarded which indicates this side might also have been boarded completely.

Did you bother to read the updates?

I know OP has caused confusion by calling this a secret room, but it wasn't uncovered by the sky engineer in the sense of boards being taken down.

What OP says is that he noticed it:

I didn't see it when I looked up there, it was only when the sky engineer had to go in there probably he mentioned it.

She and her husband have only recently moved in and haven't explored the loft yet. This is just a cosy corner surrounded by open loft space.

Non emergency police with a photo explaining that its a concealed space which they might want to check against the database

But it's not a concealed space. It hasn't even got a fourth wall! OP misnamed it.

Mincepiefan · 09/12/2025 11:39

I also don't think it's a reading nook. Too difficult to get to.

WHAT IS THIS! 😂😂😂
I feel like this would have made the "sex room" idea more plausible.
We came down from the loft and he had a voicemail, they wanted to know when he was coming into the chapel of rest. It was weird.

Please consider calling them back if they left a name of the funeral home. They may think they’ve left the message for the correct person and not try them again and that person may lose that opportunity to say goodbye (if that’s what they want).

Read this thread on my night feed and was thoroughly creeped out 😂 came back to it this morning and still think it’s a bit odd. Those who think it’s for kids to chill out - surely a pain to get up there and no window? Odd place to chill. Those who think it’s for a dad to chill again v odd no window.

I'd LOVE to see the photos of the unknown space when you open it up. And I want to know about the funeral home call!

The best things from previous owners I've found in the loft are a mediocre quality telescope, and a small tile of a sheela na gig. The sheela na gig now lives in the downstairs toilet because she is...somewhat indecent 😅

That's fascinating. Do you have any idea how old it is? It might be worth getting someone to have a look at it.

Apparently they're quite rare, and a lot of them were torn down and hidden away at one point. Especially in Ireland. It could just be a replica, but you never know. It might be older than you think!

Sadly 100% a replica in an imitation stone. Probably 1990s. Coincidentally I used to work with archeologists visiting churches, and some of them had Sheela na gigs. They loved to show them off Grin I knew what I was looking at when I found her.

The wallpaper looks like lots of eyeballs 🤣 the lonesome chair freaks me out a bit like who sat in it .. why would you want to sit in there by yourself .. it could've been a hiding place for someone.
Remember the canoe man who committed fraud and he lived in a secret locked room in the house that there sons were brought up in .. they thought he was dead but in the house the whole time .
Batshit crazy.

SwimmingNoodle · 09/12/2025 12:40

I agree with @user927464
I mean hopefully nothing but please report it. Let the police decide.
It is possible that it used to be a secret room but has since had a covering wall removed.
Is there any sign of a board having been removed from the half wall? In other words could it have, at some point, had a board in front of it to block it off like a full wall? Or a temporary wall that’s easily removed? Like if there was someone was kept in there… shudder. I’d go to the police and let them decide, as there doesn’t seem to be an obvious explanation.

I'd have been over the moon with this space as a tween / teenager. If they had kids sharing rooms, this would be a lovely little resource.

There really are tons of obvious explanations. If OP is genuinely concerned she could start by asking the previous occupants of the house what they used this corner for before wasting police time.

SwimmingNoodle · 09/12/2025 12:50

@Oftenaddled I would do both. The police can decide if it’s a waste of their time.

So a mass of cabling. A small enclosed space you have to crawl through to get to the door, avoiding probably putting your knee through the ceiling in the process along with other hazards like bits of nails and metal because builders don't tend to be too careful finishing lofts. To get to it you have to lower the loft ladder. It's probably freezing in winter and boiling hot in summer. Not to mention if the ceiling panels are not in properly it could have rot behind them. Then you've got all the dust and fibres that you breathe in while using it in the loft.

Finally, it would be a horrible fire risk as very difficult to escape from at short notice.

A "lovely little resource".

Well, she's fabulous even if she is an imitation 😁

And you sent me down a very interesting art history rabbit hole, so thank you for sharing!

The points you raise are what I don’t get. Plus the actual space looks tiny. If it’s for storage why bother putting in wall paper.

Loads of assumptions there - people are perfectly capable of cleaning up after builders. The only one that we have at reason to think applies is fire escape, and people do hang out in lofts regardless of fire exits. I agree that I would (now) look to mitigate fire risk in such a space, but whoever used the space may well have done so.

It looks like a makeshift bedroom. I think maybe a growing family with kids who couldnt share bedrooms any more..So one of them has thought it would be fun to sleep in the loft, so mum and dad have rigged up a sort of bedroom. An agile teenager would think nothing of climbing up and down ladders or crawling into small gaps. If it's been entirely blocked off or hidden or boarded up then thats disturbing, but you seem to be saying it was just open at the end of the loft and not hidden at all ??? Is that right..

I think it was most likely occasional use for work / online meetings / vlogging and the wallpaper is to give a homely background. Or to cover a botch job with the plasterboards! Or someone had a hobby space up there and liked the wallpaper - it certainly warms up a dark space.

I think it's far less likely that someone would wallpaper a "secret" prison cell, punishment room, or porn studio with such distinctive wallpaper. And I wish I could understand why posters aren't calling the police about every nook and cranny in their attics that "could" once have been boarded. Do you need wallpaper, carpet and chairs to use a space for nefarious purposes?

Is there an old piano behind the green door?
