I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

I’d love to have a tea making ghost.

If a film poster or a book cover features a lone chair like that, it’s usually used for torture.

Chair is a bit too low and stubby I think - torturer might put his back out 🤔

Also probably pushing it to try to get a full suite up there ...

SabreIsMyFave · 07/12/2025 14:40

That is so cool. 😎But also, it's giving The Shining vibes! 😱

CoolPlayer · 07/12/2025 14:50

Did they have children? A lot of let’s make a cool secret room videos on YouTube. Maybe they had more stuff in it that’s gone with them and they didn’t want/forgot the chair so thought let’s leave it in that part so they won’t see we’ve left it straight away?

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/12/2025 15:08

Maybe contact sellers and say you left behind a chair 😂

I once looked round a house where the loft was only accessible via a steep fold down ladder. When we got up, we saw a room just like the one in your picture coming off the side, with a webcam built into the wall and the same chair. Our only guess was voyeurism/swinging or homemade pornography?!

Grim. I wonder if it was the same house.
Sadly this sort of activity isn’t unheard of.
Im not putting in the link as it is all so vile but here’s the headline.

“Man held 10-year-old girl captive in ‘torture den’ attic as he played out sadomasochistic fantasies”

CheekyChickenFucker · 07/12/2025 16:01

It reminds me of the secret bunker in Dark where they experimented on young boys to go back in time. If there was German 80s music in there it would be super creepy.

Oftenaddled · 07/12/2025 16:04

I don't see an open nook like this with it's cheerful wallpaper as a very convincing torture den. Attics are shaped like this. What's bothering people? The chair? What kind of chair do you expect people to heft up to an attic.

It's not a scary secret room. It's a wallpapered niche which OP and her husband had overlooked...

Christmas2025 · 07/12/2025 17:07

Hope this works I'm not much good with links! 🧐

Exit: Looks like it didn't. I don't know if it'll work if you click it. It's a true crime video about a missing family found locked in an attic 9 years later 😵‍💫

Have you watched Being Human? 😆

VictoriousPunge · 07/12/2025 17:14

I don't suppose you're somewhere near Great Missenden? Because if you are, I think I may have been in this very room as a child in the 1970s, when it was a playroom accessible only by ladder, and known as The Tobler-room. After the chocolate. I remember there being a Scalextric track and a portable record player among other things. Much hilarity was produced by playing a Smurfs record with the switch turned to the wrong RPM to make the Smurfs even squeakier. Probably even creepier than Mr Tumble if you're not five.

Viewsaremyown · 07/12/2025 17:19

Maybe the previous tenants had committed a crime and were waiting for the police to raid…

LoveToRun866 · 07/12/2025 17:52

We need an update, because I've been to work and am thinking about it again.

Roughly how old is the wallpaper?
What's behind the wallpaper?😃

Beammeupbob · 07/12/2025 18:07

Do you live in Southport?

Silverwinged · 07/12/2025 18:09

My boring theory:

They had plans for this loft and played around with a few things, changed their minds and abandoned the whole idea. They then boarded it up, because they did not want to undo the damage nor look at the result of this ugly experiment.

Oftenaddled · 07/12/2025 18:52

A key point here is that it's not a room, secret or otherwise. It hasn't been boarded in. The half wall will be structural. It's just a corner / nook / niche.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 07/12/2025 19:06

Have you thought about contacting the police? This cannot be anything else other than a torture room.

Which has a hatch into an even smaller version. It's creepy secret rooms all the way down...

...down to the ground floor. You climb down exploring them all, but slip when you get to the last one, ending up in a space barely big enough for your body. The walls judder and the precariously balanced hatch slams shut 😫 There's no handle on the inside and since you live alone, nobody to hear your screams. The house stands empty for decades until the council seizes it and sells it at auction because there's a housing crisis. That's how 100 years later the new owner realises the outside wall is longer than the inside wall, has a poke around and realises the inside wall is hollow. Deciding to open it up for more room, they happily start upon their demolition project, where they discover all the secret rooms. Satisfied with their days work, they stand back to admire their progress. They're horrified, as the dust settles, to see a skeletal hand poking up from the rubble...

Hello, police, I found a bit of my loft that had some bad wallpaper and a chair.

Ohwhatswrong · 07/12/2025 19:12

I can't really update anything untill tomorrow, sorry.
Other than it was a family that lived here, kids are older, late teens/ working age now.
They have moved a 10 minute walk away but i don't know which house.
It isn't a full on hidden room, no. But when you just glance around with your phone torch into the attic we didn't see it.
It's definitely (will double check tomorrow) our attic and not next door.
The hatch to get in is small. I definitely wouldn't let my children use it as a play room. Even if they were older.
I like the point about the carpet and wallpaper meaning it's probs not a torture/ murder room!
More like someone taking inappropriate photos of children type of room. That was my first thought and I still think that. It's just so odd!
Although I think maybe redecorating it would make it a lot less WTF and but me more at ease.

Doubt they'd use and leave identifiable wallpaper in that case.

Why are you assuming there's anything sinister going on here? It's nobody else's fault you and your husband didn't notice this niche. The fact that you didn't see it doesn't make it a secret room.

It does make you ask why people never have full surveys.

They were renting. No need for a survey.

Shmoigel · 07/12/2025 19:20

It’s giving me the heeby jeebies

custardcreme77 · 07/12/2025 19:20

Probably the chair was left if it was originally a flat pack, made up in the attic then wouldn’t fit through the loft small hatch to take downstairs?

Aluna · 07/12/2025 19:50

older, late teens/ working age now

Much as I’d like it to be a witch’s lair. To be fair it does look exactly like something teens would use with their mates, to game and hang out, play the drums.
