I've seen these threads before and thought how on earth did you not know! How big must your house be to have a secret room.
Our house is not massive, 4 bed, normal size not really old or anything.
But there's a super creepy room. Hidden at the back of the loft, It's got carpet, wall paper and even spot lights! And a director's chair... just sitting in the middle of it! It's weird.

When I was a kid our attic was split - although it wasn’t secret/hidden. Up the ladder was a “typical loft space” with stuff stored, then there was a partition wall and a room behind. That room didn’t meet building regs as it had no windows, but it was carpeted, had a load of bean bags, and things like my brother’s scalectrix were set up there as well as a TV. We used to use it for movie nights (had to get my dad to haul the video player up) and sleepovers as teenagers.

Could it have been a priest hole. How old is the house?

Not very old.

MyDeftDuck · 07/12/2025 11:35

Clear it out, strip off the wallpaper, remove the door and use it as you would your normal loft space. Sorted.

Oftenaddled · 07/12/2025 11:55

It is a cool little discovery - not meaning to rain on your parade. I'd be pleased with it. Your kids will love it when they are older.

But I wouldn't start being morbid about it and letting it change your feelings about being settled in your new house. What does it tell you? Someone with cheerful taste in wallpaper and slapdash habits in DIY lived here once. Enjoy your lovely new home.

Hummusanddipdip · 07/12/2025 11:55

Did the previous owners have children? Could they have used it as an escape space.
Just showed it to dh and he said we could do with one of those...

Somewhere to go and sit in silence when the children are a bit much 😂 or after a long day at work to.just sit and contemplate life 🤷‍♀️

5128gap · 07/12/2025 11:58

Its a corner of your loft that someone's tried to make into usable space for reasons unknown. They've moved stuff out and left a chair. The only way this could be of any concern would be if a person was currently using the space for nefarious purposes. They are not, and chances are, never were. All you've found is a space in your home someone has used before, like every other inch of it. No reason at all for it to feel creepy or put you off your home. Wallpaper and a chair never harmed anyone.

A rare outbreak of common sense.

Model railway room

It's giving fucked up Mr tumble vibes. It even has green skirting boards. And why is the chair in there like that? It's weird and I wish we hadn't found it tbh.

The chair could have easily be put there just before previous people moved out, just to give you the creep.

I dont understand how you can buy a house and not know what is in it. How does that happen? Did you not go in the loft before?

I suppose the loft can be full of stuff so you wouldn't walk through it - my surveyor couldn't access all of mine for that reason.

(No secret room, though it had the odd abandoned sock and a little minefield of lego pieces. And polka dot wallpaper!)

Didimum · 07/12/2025 09:26

Doesn’t sound like it was hidden. Just sounds like you didn’t notice it.

Yes, thats what I though too. They just didnt look properly around the loft.

TheMimsy · 07/12/2025 12:32

@Ohwhatswrong the green frame is probably access to under the eaves away from the boarded up part of the roof.

LikeAHandleInTheWind · 07/12/2025 12:33

The previous owners probably didn't tell the surveyor because they did an unauthentic bodged job - I'd want any sockets and lights checked by an electrician, could be amateur work

Gettingbysomehow · 07/12/2025 12:35

Yikes! Have you ever read the story, "The yellow wallpaper" this is it in your attic.

Yes. OP, you need to stop your imagination running away with you and just take ownership of this bit of your home. Take the chair to the tip and strip the wallpaper. Put some of your stuff in there and normalise the space for yourself. Once you claim it you'll probably see the value in it.

katepilar · 07/12/2025 12:41

You can obviously rip the whole space out if it creeps you out. Perhaps just taking all the wallpaper etc down will be enough to make you feel better, or transform it in one or another and either use it as storage or leave it for perhaps later use. Would you be allowed to put a window in later?

This is so cool!!

I have always wanted to find a secret room!

I know it’s not life changing but it’s still cool that you have more room than you thought.

I think so too. It does look a bit tatty, but thinking it would make a good nook or craft room

AuntyAngela · 07/12/2025 12:45

Christmas2025 · 06/12/2025 23:23

I was going to say reading nook, or secret sex chamber...but you win 🤣

To be fair, it could be a sex chamber on the other end of the attic. If so, this is most likely the waiting room.

Just you wait til the tapping starts..

viques · 07/12/2025 12:56

My cellar doesn’t stretch the full length of the house. It ends in a brick wall. There is about another 20 feet of house going beyond the brick wall. And as far as I am concerned that is all I need to know about it.

Ooh I'd love to have a ghost.

There was someone on her years ago who insisted her family ghost used to put a teabag in the cup ready for a morning cup of tea every day, and I have been seething with jealousy ever since ...

FairKoala · 07/12/2025 13:01

I am presuming it is your room and not next doors

Coralinescat · 07/12/2025 13:28

I literally just finished reading a book where a family moves into a new house, and the husband finds a secret room. There's an old armchair, a Welsh dresser, etc. in the room. And a bunch of momentos (glasses, wallet, watch, dog collar, etc) inside the dresser, kept by a serial killer, from the victims, who now wants the stuff back!

Oh I remember reading that book myself.

My loft is full of stuff. Mainly ex dh but that’s another story

so if I sold and a buyer stuck their head up they would see a lot of stuff but not in the far corner where tech I could do the same and make a space / but too much hassle getting ladder up and down everytime I wanted peace 😂

but thanks for the book title. I have ordered 4 of their books as buy 3 get 1 free on eBay son4 for £10 ish

fishfingerbutty · 07/12/2025 13:50

If a film poster or a book cover features a lone chair like that, it’s usually used for torture.
