to think Vernon Kay is a misogynistic idiot...

I mean... it's very clear poor old Vernon 'professional northerner' Kay is not the sharpest tool in even the most meagre box. But I am really fed up with him on Radio 2 constantly referring to Taylor Swift only by reference to her fiancé Travis Kelcie (an American football player for anyone that doesn't know).

He keeps doing it (today an eg) - clearly gets complaints - but dismisses these in the same misogynistic tone as "daft Taylor Swift fans". His excuse is basically, “that’s how I know her, thats my field” — as if a radio DJ somehow doesn’t know the name of the most successful artist in the world. I mean I get he has no music background and is a minor TV presenter not an actual dj but still ...

It just feels misogynistic and really derogatory. He wouldn’t talk about a male artist through the lens of who they’re dating.

It makes him look ridiculous and really grinds my gears (as a feminist rather than any particular TS super fan).

Interesting too that he focuses on the clearly less famous male partner of a very high profile woman too. Wonder why that could be....

Not sure that a 70% agreement counts as having your ass handed to you on a plate love. 😉

Aww I like Vernon, used to listen to his Radio 1 show on a Saturday afternoon, driving into London. It's down to him I have Porter Robinson's Language on my playlist, and one of my biggest earworms.

Don't listen to Radio 2, prefer Absolute or Virgin Radio Legends. Always mean to try Vernon's Radio 2 show though.

if it's a joke, where's the funny part?

I get he might be riffing off the fact TK is often referred to as TS's boyfriend. Or he might be using that as an excuse as OP thinks. Even if he is genuinely just playing around with that, it's not exactly rolling on the floor witticism, is it?

Edited

Does it need to be?

soupyspoon · 28/11/2025 07:11

Its like when Ken Bruce used to refer to a plate of chips as a Scottish salad. Im sure that isnt rolling on the floor witticism either and highly offensive to some but I found it funny

Do you feel al riled at all the times Obama whilst President was introduced humorously as Michelle’s husband?

My “tea” …

And you expect us to believe you’re from the north?

Seeing as she’s so famous in her own right, he is clearly joking, isn’t he..? Just to wind people up?

I thought this too.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 28/11/2025 07:56

The gist of the comments is fairly different to the current polling figures.

I never listen to him so don’t know what he’s like but maybe he should always be introduced as ‘the husband of Tess Daly’ as a hilarious joke that just never ends.

He always strikes me as someone who has been spectacularly lucky to be so successful. I have no sense of him being especially witty, innovative, charismatic, knowledgeable etc. He’s just been around for ever and I don’t really know why. I don’t listen to R2 tho so perhaps I’m being mean.

So personally I do think it’s a different thing when the woman is more famous than the man as in the TS example.

Even jokingly diminishing a woman’s success compared to her partner is worse than doing it to a man.

This is Taylor swift

Nothing “diminishes ” her fame

YABU. No one is forcing you to consume his content if you don't appreciate his humour.

I didn’t say ‘fame’. I said ‘success’. They are different things.

What even is a professional northerner? And what's "professional northerner schtick"?

I genuinely have no idea what that means. Is it just someone on tv/radio who speaks with a northern accent and who has the audacity to not try and "soften" over the years? 😅

VoodooQualities · 28/11/2025 18:29

Of course Vernon knows who Taylor is. It's obviously a joke, and I think it's a stretch to say it's coming from a place of misogyny.

Also, fuck off with your 'professional northerner' bullshit.

UnctuousUnicorns · 28/11/2025 18:54

I can't believe anyone would think to take this seriously, some major SOH fail there. 😅 It's akin to when people would refer to the late Queen as Prince Philip's wife. As for the repetition, it's known in the biz as a "running joke" - such as when Smash Hits always used to refer to Billy Idol as "Sir Billiam Idol". Just a bit of silliness. Like when he continually goes on about eating his smoked bacon and cheese sourdough sandwich - he sounds like he's having an orgasm. It's just daft. 😅

I had to laugh one time, when earlier in the show he'd advised folk to "think before they put fingers to keyboard", but then later, while discussing school nurses and inoculations etc, he referred to the tetanus jab as "the witch mark on your shoulder". No, Kay, you frigging goon, that's the BCG. 😅

I think it’s someone who has crafted an entire personality based on being northern.

So Steve Coogan, Caroline Aherne, Victoria Wood are obviously northern and it runs through their humour. Peter Kay, Paddy McGuinness, Vernon Kay are professional northerners.

I am FROM the North .... doesn't mean I don't recognise and get irriated by the professional northernet schtick that a minority of Northern TV and radio presenters employ.

As am I and the term really pisses me off
