to think Vernon Kay is a misogynistic idiot...

KidsDoBetter · 27/11/2025 15:20

I mean... it's very clear poor old Vernon 'professional northerner' Kay is not the sharpest tool in even the most meagre box. But I am really fed up with him on Radio 2 constantly referring to Taylor Swift only by reference to her fiancé Travis Kelcie (an American football player for anyone that doesn't know).

He keeps doing it (today an eg) - clearly gets complaints - but dismisses these in the same misogynistic tone as "daft Taylor Swift fans". His excuse is basically, “that’s how I know her, thats my field” — as if a radio DJ somehow doesn’t know the name of the most successful artist in the world. I mean I get he has no music background and is a minor TV presenter not an actual dj but still ...

It just feels misogynistic and really derogatory. He wouldn’t talk about a male artist through the lens of who they’re dating.

It makes him look ridiculous and really grinds my gears (as a feminist rather than any particular TS super fan).

Interesting too that he focuses on the clearly less famous male partner of a very high profile woman too. Wonder why that could be....

It's a joke about the very fact that she is miles more famous than him. He's making the opposite point to the one you think he's making. It's irony.

Where in the OP is it presented as a joke?

It's not presented as a joke in the OP because the OP herself doesn't get the joke either.

God, this is hard work.

Why are you 'FFS'ing everyone's opinions? Chill, it's not that deep.

It IS a joke. Whether the OP "presents" it that way or not. That's what it is.

Vernon isn't out there on a one-man mission to bring down Taylor Swift.

FFS.

Then your main battle should be with celebrity gossip magazines, which are primarily marketed towards women.

All celebrities within those magazines are framed in terms of their love lives, or fictional imagined "feuds," fabricated solely to sell more copies.

Of course, such magazines have little to say about the actual work or talents of the female celebrities featured.

Nah - it's really not a joke. Don't worry I've got a highly developed sense of humour and sarcasm detector. Once, perhaps - repeatedly - nah.

There's an edge to it. Coming from a bloke whose past behaviour around women and treatment of his wife suggests he may struggle somewhat with the idea of powerful women.

Don't worry I've got a highly developed sense of humour and sarcasm detector

You really, really haven't.

Also, the degree of detail in which you recall, and are apparently still obsessing over, a minor tabloid story about a presenter's philandering from about 15 years ago, is frankly a bit fucking weird.

exse24Londoner · 27/11/2025 16:17

I'm not really a fan of Vernon Kaye though he is better than his predecessor. I stopped listening to R2 when Zoe left (except on Saturdays - love love love Liza Tarbuck & Rylan). He is however well suited to his wife though I definitely wouldn't say he is the less successful - all she does is model dresses & patronise contestants on Strictly & do adverts. They both earn well for being pretty

He follows American Football - a lot.
You don't like him. Not sure what an actual d j is though if it isn't someone who plays records on the radio. Maybe because I'm older I think he might not get everything right but he isn't misogynistic like you think he is.
Also (and this is me) I wouldn't have thought Taylor Swift is the most successful artist in the world so maybe to 50something vernon kay she doesn't take the headspace that Oasis and the Verve appear to (he mentions them and lot).

Well, many would argue a DJ is someone who mixes records (combines two or more records at the same time) or, at the very least, chooses which record comes next on radio or in a club... whereas mainstream radio DJs are presenters who talk between records chosed by a producer or playlist.

I have little interest in modern pop music, and no interest in TS, but even I know who she is and that she is the biggest modern act on the planet, or damn close.

If he follows American Football a lot then good on him. Perhaps he might like to be more professional and when on the radio playing music for British people who want to listen to music but very few of whom care anything about American Football, he might like to drop the American football chat / references?

GlasgowGal2014 · 27/11/2025 16:24

I can't get upset about this because:

  1. He's clearly joking and using it as a segue to talk about something he is passionate about - American football. He played competitively in his youth and is still involved in a club today, and he presented TV coverage of American football for a number of years.
  2. He also routinely refers to his wife as 'Strictly Come Dancing's Tess Daly'.
MatronPomfrey · 27/11/2025 16:28

There are other radio shows to listen to, don’t bother with Tess Daly’s husband.

GumFossil · 27/11/2025 16:31

I guess he thinks he is being very witty, (which he isn't).

One of the best oblique references that I remember is that 'Larry Adler, he's the Yehudi Menuhin of the harmonica world. '

333FionaG · 27/11/2025 16:40

It's bad form to bring up Vernon Kay's past misdemeanours from FIFTEEN years ago.
The fact that he has a long standing joke about Taylor Swift and her fiancé, that the OP wrongly interpreted as him being misogynistic, is irrelevant.

ilovesushi · 27/11/2025 16:42

Isn't he a former American football player? He does it very tongue in cheek. Doesn't bother me at all.

KidsDoBetter · 27/11/2025 16:47

Crushed23 · 27/11/2025 16:11

I’m sure the multi-billionaire Taylor Swift is devastated that a second-rate DJ in the UK is being demeaning or telling bad jokes at her fiancé’s expense. Devastated.

I have zero concern about Taylor Swift self-esteem levels either generally or relating to some comments made by an English DJ.

I do have issues with a man on mainstream media feeling the need to constantly introduce references to the career and achievements of the male partner of the woman whose music he is playing every single time under the guise of a "joke". It's that simple. It's irrelevant at best but in my view reductive and misogynistic.

So her song The Fate of Ophelia is played constantly at the moment and he will introduce it as "and that was Travis Kelcie's fiance who is a (blah bah) for the kansas chiefs with fate of Ophelia. And then some bloody waffle about some american football game at the weekend.

Clearly a very minor thing to be annoyed about but its so irrelevant (at best). He is so stupid he doesn't even realise he is being misogynistic. I've heard him do it a few times and today he did it again - and then said - ah I get complaints about this from the Swifties but this is my field and how I know her. Every single time. Its not a radio show about american football you a**hole.

it really annoys me too. I actually think he is better than Ken Bruce but its a low bar!
I moan every time I hear it. He can do better
