A house down the road is having some work done and the workmen have parked their van blocking the access road to 40-odd garages. I nicely asked them to move it this morning so I could get out, which they did without and hassle. I came back and they were there again! On-street parking is a nightmare and there were no other spaces so I've blocked them in. I'm several houses down and am in now until 2-ish. There is technically another exit but it's a right pain to get to, so they can try doing a 100-point turn if they like...

Diagram to follow.

Set fire to the van. Add some spice to the tale or call it quits

I feel this would be counterproductive to getting the van out of the way today.

So the “other exit with many chains on gate”

isn’t actually an exit?

Laserwho · 08/11/2025 14:24

You seem to post quite a lot for someone who was supposed to go out at 2pm. Did the van guy even notice you blocking them in? I doubt it as they are busy working.

The chains are for show to stop people using the access road for drug dealing or as a cut-through and to deter burglars. Everyone actually living here knows they can just unwrap the chains and open the gate. The gate prefect will tell you off if you don't put them back properly though.

So if the van driver looked at the chains, he’d see….
no locks
remove them
drive off

Am here for the diagram

I posted on the health & beauty forum a while ago. I made sure I included a diagram to illustrate by post, such is their popularity on here 😂

SlothMama14 · 08/11/2025 14:28

Unless I'm misreading this, you seem more of a parking CFer than the van driver! He parked in the access road because presumably there is no space outside renovation house. You needed him to move so he did. He then parked back there again in the absence of a space appearing in the street. Presumably if another neighbour needed access he'd move again. Really don't see what your problem is.

You aren’t driving and mumsnetting are you?!

No idea if they've noticed. If I was being spiteful, I'd say they might have fancied popping out for lunch. Maybe they brought sandwiches?

The people we're visiting pushed it back by half an hour so we're still here. Sorry to knock you off schedule.

Well if they pushed it back by half an hour… you need to leave now. It’s 2.30!

Andsomemore · 08/11/2025 14:31

Oh he will have bought sandwiches definitely rather than waste time going to town on a Saturday

Probably tucking in now

ooooo I’m in pain with a flare up of my psoriatic disease and fibromyalgia today, can I hobble round to yours with some gin and pain killers please

Ouch, that sounds awful. Please do come over!! I have Bombay Sapphire (almost full) and some heavy duty codeine, quite the cheeky little cocktail I hope you'd agree. Shall we watch a film or the rugby? All welcome.

CatHugger · 08/11/2025 14:32

Not when it takes 1h 15m and we're due at 4. Don't worry, I'll make sure to go to the loo and put on my shoes in good time Wink

So?
Are you wanting everyone in the road to get your permission to have work done on their property so it doesn’t inconvenience you for a few days/weeks?

I’m into the 10th week of a major roof restoration and roofers, carpenters scaffolding companies all put notes out to neighbours and even knocked on the immediate neighbours doors to apologise in advance for the inconvenience that they were going to experience. We had 5 scaffolding trunks at one point and will again next week.
Round the corner 4 brand new properties are being built by the council, Road is blocked every day for the last 16 weeks. Work vans on pavement and corners (main route to the infant school).
Everyone is calm in our road.
The next road is bitter and irritated and the parking and driving habits deliberately out to :
’piss off everyone because I’m pissed off not being able to use the road’
‘I can’t walk my kids to school’

WhatsApp chat does not solve the problem. Polite conversation with the workers, who are possibly unaware and also under pressure to get the job done without their tools getting nicked!

The issue with spite parking to block someone in is that it just aggravates the other person and now, instead of moving when asked, the builder might be inclined to ignore any requests to unblock the access road going forward.

Good point. Fortunately for my spotless criminal record, we used the last of the matches on DD's birthday candles.

So you needing to be out by 2…. Not true?

Andsomemore · 08/11/2025 14:35

So literally all he has to do is drive to the other exit, see that the chains are unlocked, remove and drive off. Chuckling to himself

Are your builders parked over people's driveways, and would you consider that acceptable if it happened to you? It's perfectly possible for these workmen to do their job without blocking the road. They just CBA.

No, it's one we have with our immediate neighbours for putting the bins out, cat sitting etc. (there are many cats, not shown on the diagram though).

Personally I feel that you have a duty to indicate cats' positions on the diagram now.

This is tedious but I'll break it down. We were supposed to be going out at 2-ish (1415 to be exact) to be at our destination for 1530. The people we're visiting messaged to say they're running late and could we please come at 1600 instead. So now we don't need to leave until 1445 Zulu. Savvy?

You need to be going to the loo now then if you’re going to make it for 4pm! Otherwise you’ll be late, which would be a little…. Bit inconsiderate 😆
