A house down the road is having some work done and the workmen have parked their van blocking the access road to 40-odd garages. I nicely asked them to move it this morning so I could get out, which they did without and hassle. I came back and they were there again! On-street parking is a nightmare and there were no other spaces so I've blocked them in. I'm several houses down and am in now until 2-ish. There is technically another exit but it's a right pain to get to, so they can try doing a 100-point turn if they like...

Diagram to follow.

And that I LOVE the notion of a tortoise cam that allows neighbours to rescue said beastie when it manages to get itself tipped over! I love the mental image of its little legs waving slowly in the air whilst it awaits its rescuers 😂

No, it's one we have with our immediate neighbours for putting the bins out, cat sitting etc. (there are many cats, not shown on the diagram though).

I asked for cats to be added - apologies - they already had been.

We have stickers @CatHugger !!!
DC orders them off Etsy for me. They're about 7cm in diameter and circular and fit on a car's maker badge nicely. They say "I park like a knob/twat/c*t". I always start with the knob one if doing a vehicle in my neighbourhood and work upwards to c*t if they're a bit slow to get the idea that parking in our road (and blocking it) rather than on their own driveway two roads away isn't appreciated.
I'm disabled so use the drop off/pick up only area at our local supermarket a lot but it's always being used by the I'm only taking 5 minutes/getting lunch/getting fags/using the atm types who can't be arsed to use a proper parking space because it takes longer. So while I'm waiting for DP to collect me from shopping I sticker cars!
They never notice so I always wonder how long they drive around before they notice. DP has seen a few when stopped in traffic locally. This week I've stickered 3 vehicles including a Deliveroo moped parked at a jaunty angle in the middle of the pick up area at the supermarket about 6' from the actual motorcycle parking area.

Hands down one of the most tragic and depressing posts I’ve read. How some people live their lives astounds me.

100 point turn = very bad driver or very dramatic!

I just needed to say a ‘hooray!’ For the marvellous diagrams!

Ditto.

I have a driveway with dropped kerb (installed by a previous owner with permission from the council) which goes into the parking bay which was there prior to the garage and driveway being added.

The parking bay extends in front of our terraced block of three. There's another longer terrace that goes at right angles to ours - no access to a road at all.

I've had issues in the past with people using the parking bay area right in front of my garage, blocking me out - a real problem when my disabled husband was still alive. It meant that I had to abandon my car in the middle of the road - thereby blocking people if someone was parked on the other side of the road - help DH into the house, sprint back to car and then drive around looking for a space.

My experience of this had made me less than sympathetic to folk who cause inconvenience for others.

The exception would be when people ask nicely or the one a few months ago when window installers who had blocked me out said that they would move as soon as they saw me. They were very polite and had windows etc to carry up to a terraced house off the side path, so I told them that it was fine - I parked elsewhere and told them I'd happily wait until they'd finished the job for the day.

Had they been arsey, I'd have done my damnedest to block them in.

Known cats, tortoise and rabbit added. I can't draw dogs so please add them in your imagination.

Not my plan to block him at the other end but ok, I can be the petty mastermind in this tale if needed.

Not rtft yet but just had to say I loved this diagram. Absolutely awesome 😂

AttilaTheMeerkat · 09/11/2025 14:07

Get the PCSOs involved. Better using them than blocking vehicles in on public highways.

Imagine seeing your mum do this?

I mean, where to start….

Didkyle · 09/11/2025 14:12

I bet the van driver had such a grin on his face as he left through the other exit!

Tryonemoretime · 09/11/2025 14:53

Fluffyholeysocks · 08/11/2025 13:11

I'm probably going to get flamed but I do have sympathy for tradesmen when they have no where to park nearby when they are on a job. Some need access to tools and machinery so have no option other than to park as near as possible. In my experience if you ask them nicely they normally move their vans.

I wish! Coming out of our drive is often a nightmare. We live on a narrow country road. I love the neighbours living two doors up from us, but their workmen are a APITA and park their vans in such a way that I can't see who is driving (too fast) down the hill. If it's a car parked there, I can see through the windscreen, so it isn't a problem. A van's windscreen is too high up for me to see through it from my car. I have asked the neighbour to point out to the workmen how dangerously they are parking, and she has told them. But then she goes to work and they move their van back....

Lesleyhill22 · 09/11/2025 15:57

It’s clear to me after the OPs description that the 2 rights of way (front and back) are for the residents, not the general public (i.e. the builders). The builders should not block the right of way even for short periods. It’s up to the residents of the house being renovated to make this clear to the builders and to suggest a convenient place for them to park their van. Maybe they can remove the fence to their front garden to allow a temporary parking space for the builders’ van!😆

Theyreeatingthedogs · 09/11/2025 16:05

Whatnowsheila · 09/11/2025 12:55

Well they need to park somewhere surely. If they moved it before, just ask them to move it again.

It’s pathetic the whole street community being excited about ‘wars’ when you could just ask them to move. They’re just doing a job.

But they could do their job with consideration. They could park where the are not blocking access to the garages.

Laserwho · 09/11/2025 08:37

So you weren't blocked in. The van man exited perfectly fine using the other exit. Blocked in means no way out, when actually there was this whole time. Pointless post. A van would be bigger than your car yet van man used the other exit perfectly fine 🤣 check your driving skills

That’s not really the point is it? It’s a right of way only for the residents, not for the builders to park in.

Well he did
and no one was blocked
and he left via the back exit
a “war” this was not

MinimumRage · 09/11/2025 16:16

Neighbours need access to garages + builders need to park close to site = reality of our crowded island.

Oh that’s a bit annoying, chat to builders, ask if you can get past, say thanks, move on with life.

Don’t order stickers from the internet, whip up WhatsApp groups, draw diagrams. As a PP said, do people really live their lives with this level of intensity and emotion - I’d be exhausted if I cared this much as about such petty stuff.

Lesleyhill22 · 09/11/2025 16:17

FourIsNewSix · 08/11/2025 17:31

I don't understand people defending the driver.
If there is "nowhere else to park", than there is just nowhere to park at all, blocking the access road to people's garages isn't a solution.

I'd understand stopping for a few minutes to unload the tools and than parking further away, but blocking the road and expecting people to come and 'ask nicely' is really stupid.

You are 100% spot on! It’s something the kitchen renovation house owners should have taken into consideration when arranging the renovations contract!

Well I guess my life is very empty and unexciting but the stickers are driven by frustration. I'm disabled because I'm dying from terminal cancer and wankers who park inconsiderately where they're not supposed to do actually make my life more difficult while I try to live as normally for as long as possible @Whatnowsheila @Didkyle

I'm not patrolling the streets looking for 'offenders' but a few people who live a few streets away are using our road because it's safe and quiet which I actually don't mind but they're parking in ways that block everyone else's ease of getting in and out of our road and leaving vehicles unattended for weeks. I did sticker one huge jeep which was left for about 4 weeks and it was another 4 weeks before the vehicle was checked and then moved - it's not been back so perhaps stickers do make people realise that they are causing issues for others.
I won't describe the frustration of the ambulance staff who couldn't get to me on Christmas Day because of the narrow chicane made by cars from several roads away using our road for their visitors because that would be.....tragic perhaps???

I’m sorry to hear about your illness, but randomly stickering cars isn’t going to change anyone’s behaviour. If they don’t notice them for ages, then they don’t even know where they come from. Probably think it’s just random.

i don’t understand the second point. Either your road has space for cars either side or it doesn’t. People are allowed to park where they like as long as it’s legal.

You are dying from terminal cancer (I am so sorry, really).

Surely there is a better way to spend your life than stickering cars with abusive stickers?

and

the drop off and / pick up isn’t exclusively for disabled. You have squat all idea why they’re parked there and this seems a completely disproportionate response

This poster is even stickering cars for using the drop off / pick up (in a way she has deemed unacceptable)!!

Dear god!!!!
My comments were actually light hearted on what is a light hearted thread @Didkyle @Whatnowsheila - I have been thoroughly patronised by you both now and acknowledge the metaphorical pat on the head dispensed. And why do you assume that I am female?

You seem to be under the impression that I am spending the rest of my natural life searching the neighbourhood for badly parked cars and stickering them. I'm not obviously because dying actually takes up quite a lot of my time so I could never spend all the time time stickering that you imply I do. Our road is very narrow with 20 houses and all have driveways/garages that we use and very little street parking availability due to dropped kerbs but we all know each others vehicles so it's never an issue. You're right in saying anyone can use street parking and I agree absolutely (they don't bother me at all) but we are talking about vans & large cars from nearby properties (2 or 3 roads away) parking in our road and parking inconsiderately as in right on the junction where our road meets the next road. Add in people who then park opposite our junction and we lose our visibility to exit our road safely. We have had so many near misses. Some neighbours are thinking of asking the council to put in double yellows on the junction corners but I couldn't possibly comment on that.

Now here's the thing. My local supermarket has created a dedicated drop off/pick up space because people asked for it and they've clearly signed it as such (ie it clearly says no parking & why!). Just as they have created a signed off area for emergency vehicles but no one parks there because it's cctv monitored. I have been waiting to be picked up and drivers have parked in the DO/PU area right in front of me while I'm sat there in my chair. One actually asked me move myself out of the way so he could get his passenger door open to let his mate out - they were builders on their lunch break (I know this because I asked them & they were getting a lunch meal deal). I have actually asked drivers why they've stopped in DO/PU and most have answered with I'm only going to be 5 minutes/getting lunch/getting a lotto ticket//getting vapes or fags/using the ATM etc. Some blue badge users do use it but mainly because they don't realise how close the disabled spaces are (6' away) - disabled spaces are very plentiful and very close to the 2 entrances. Some drivers do move and some just walk off. My DC/carer actually got the stickers because they were fed of trying to get to the car picking me up with a full trolley negotiating wrongly parked cars and so thought that just may be drivers would think twice. Sometimes it will work and sometimes not.

I presume that the two of you @Didkyle @Whatnowsheila fall into the not give a shiny shite category seeing as you're both dismissive and rude about it. It's not about right or wrong - it's about what is fair and considerate. NFO

Didkyle · 10/11/2025 14:53
