A house down the road is having some work done and the workmen have parked their van blocking the access road to 40-odd garages. I nicely asked them to move it this morning so I could get out, which they did without and hassle. I came back and they were there again! On-street parking is a nightmare and there were no other spaces so I've blocked them in. I'm several houses down and am in now until 2-ish. There is technically another exit but it's a right pain to get to, so they can try doing a 100-point turn if they like...

Diagram to follow.

You're a bit of a disgrace OP, and should be ashamed of yourself really. Imo of course.

SALaw · 08/11/2025 13:16

I don’t understand your posts to be honest. They are blocking you in but you parking behind them isn’t blocking people in because there’s another exit so they are fine but you couldn’t use that other exit to go out previously because it adds 10 minutes and damages your car but it’s fine for the neighbours. Is that correct?

CatHugger · 08/11/2025 13:05

I could but I'm feeling like being an arse about it today. I told them nicely that it's the access road for all the house' garages and they clearly couldn't care less. It's a big renovation and I don't want this going on for weeks so making a point today to nip it in the bud.

yup I did a hefty foot down when neighbours had their garage rebuilt, builders were thoughtless and neighbour didn't address it.

spoonbillstretford · 08/11/2025 13:21

The van men could have parked elsewhere. They have already been told to park elsewhere.

Sharptonguedwoman · 08/11/2025 13:25

LizzyEm · 08/11/2025 13:12

If they are right next to it, and are happy to move to let people in and out, there isn't really an issue, is there?

Of course it is. Why should the residents have to stop and find the builder before they can use the road?

Fluffyholeysocks · 08/11/2025 13:11

I'm probably going to get flamed but I do have sympathy for tradesmen when they have no where to park nearby when they are on a job. Some need access to tools and machinery so have no option other than to park as near as possible. In my experience if you ask them nicely they normally move their vans.

Meh. I'm a tradesperson, and if I have to stop on some double yellows with my hazards on for 5 minutes, yeet my ladders into the property, drive off, park 20 minutes away and carry the rest of my stuff back down the hill to avoid inconveniencing people (looking at you Fowey and St Ives 👀) then I'll do so.

Men do this. Tradesmen. Because they're more important than everyone else, clearly. Every time there's a thread about women I the trades on here it's "Ooh ooh, I don't think you can do that, you're not as strong as a man". Well if men are so fucking physically superior they can carry their stuff from the nearest proper parking spot, can't they 🙄.

not even talking about the appalling parking that occurs every time there's an amateur football match on the local playing field. If you're here for exercise why's it so difficult to park your car considerately and walk an extra 50 metres?

SauvignonBlanche · 08/11/2025 13:28

Whaleandsnail6 · 08/11/2025 13:07

I actually agree with this.

Is there any where else they could have parked their van?

By their logic, they probably thought it wouldn't be too much of an issue to park there, whilst completing their work since there was another way to access the garages?

They wouldn't have thought anything. Other people don't exist.

ThrowAway987654321 · 08/11/2025 13:29

Can't the van just reverse back?

Imisscoffee2021 · 08/11/2025 13:31

Looking at your diagram if there are cars parked outside the renovation house as back to back with just the gap in front of that access road to the garage theybare parked in, I don't see an issue. They have a job to do and are clearly aware of rhe ball ache of it all and access issues so are trying to get it done fast.

A van is a moveable object, as you experienced you asked and they happily moved it, it's mere minutes of slight inconvenience. The only actual blockage now is your car parked blocking that access road, while theirs is available to move anytime as they're in and out and aware that they need to move it. If they'd been arrogant arseholes who huffed and puffed about moving it then fair play, but seems a bit petty atm.

CatHugger · 08/11/2025 13:34

Getting out isn't really an issue. Getting in is. There's nowhere to stop, get out to find the van owner and wait for them to reverse out onto a main road. Unless a parking space is free, of course. People are coming and going all day so van man could park further away and then move closer if he wanted to be considerate. The main entrance to the access road isn't a parking space.

AlohaRose · 08/11/2025 13:36

OP, I think you are bored and just trying to create some parking wars drama here. If only your immediate neighbours are in the WhatsApp group, how are the owners of all 40 garages back there going to realise that it is your car which is blocking the entrance/exit? Or is it somehow okay for everyone else to have to do a 10 minute detour and access from some supposedly busy main road with a stiff gate?

EchoedSilence · 08/11/2025 13:37

So you thought you would be an arsehole because you wanted to create a parking thread on MN.

ahoyshipmate · 08/11/2025 13:38

PegDope · 08/11/2025 12:35

Am here for the diagram

Was thinking about going out but will stay for a bit

CatHugger · 08/11/2025 13:40

I'm not blocking the neighbours in or out. The van is still there blocking everyone.

OP posts:
BruceAndNosh · 08/11/2025 13:44

The owner of the renovation house needs to find a space in the road before van man arrives then vacate it for van man.

BruceAndNosh · 08/11/2025 13:45

Van man has now been blocked into position A and will be quite happy to stay there until the end of his work day

Misla · 08/11/2025 13:46

CatHugger · 08/11/2025 13:11

No, it's one we have with our immediate neighbours for putting the bins out, cat sitting etc. (there are many cats, not shown on the diagram though).

Pls remedy this

One of the more dull parking “war” threads I have come across in a long time

This seems the obvious solution.

CatHugger · 08/11/2025 12:56

The neighbours WhatsApp group has gotten involved. There is talk of someone moving their car to block the other end.

So everyone with a garage would be blocked then

no one has any Saturday afternoon plans that involve using their car on the entire street?

TheatricalLife · 08/11/2025 13:50

I'd just go and speak to him properly personally rather than the long and convoluted route of WhatsApp messaging outrage, plans of how to piss them off, blocking in, hanging around waiting for drama to unfold🤷‍♀️
He's not going to be arsed you've blocked him in, he's at work.

agent765 · 08/11/2025 13:50

If all the neighbours are being involved, can one of them close to the renovation house put their car in the garage so the van can be parked close by but out of the way?

Maybe a neighbour who doesn't use their car as much as others.

You never know when your own house (or other neighbours) will need work and will be in that position. Karma and all that.

This….All of it, especially the football stuff.
meanwhile, I’m supposed to be cleaning all the upstairs of my house and now I’ve settled down for an afternoon of reading about a parking war.
its the drama Mick..I love it!!!

jetlag92 · 08/11/2025 13:51

Is it anything noisy? If so, they shouldn't be there anyway after 1pm.
