Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

I think it's racist to say that jews and muslims need to eat cruelly eaten meat, but the rest of society is ethically superior is and perfectly capable of going veggie or treating animals with less cruelty.

I wasn’t saying anything about racism. If restaurants are stating their meat is halal people can make their own choices. It wouldn’t up set me if I’ve unknowingly eaten halal meat

DancefloorAcrobatics · 29/09/2025 16:14

Halal meat is produced by letting the animals suffer that little bit longer compared to all other modern slaughter practices.

We are in the 21st century and shuld know better. No need for it at all.

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

What a bloody stupid comparison.

Why are you bothered and concerned on a personal level?

Maybe she doesn't want to eat halal meat or do the larger sections of the population not have a choice?

The difference between meat and halal meat means squat all to me. Both involve some pretty unpleasant processes to get there that I prefer not to think about and instead I just enjoy!

Same here - though on balance I sometimes choose the halal option because its the more natural (to me) process of slaughtering animals.

Sikhism forbids halal meat...it is seen as a barbaric practice. I guess we're too small a group to matter. Looks like I'll have to be vegetarian in thd nesr future

Sikh slaughter is called Jathka, which involves a swift, single cut to the animal's head.

How is that much different to halal slaughter?

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 29/09/2025 16:15

I don't eat halal meat. Just vote with your feet and don't go to Five Guys!

PickUpYourCross · 29/09/2025 16:16

There is just no hope for this country, honestly. OP you're right to be concerned.

I don't eat halal meat. Just vote with your feet and don't go to Five Guys!

Or go to the other 150+ other Five Guys branches that don't have any halal meat!

alimac12 · 29/09/2025 16:17

Honestly this is such an hypocrite post. First of all I’ve been working in hospitality for years and is common to have halal meat in bars/restaurants. Is only “famous” now with the racist movement. Second, why do you care about the death of the animal in “halal” way and no the other way. I think is even worse the factories that have animals in tiny cages, and the way they kill them is much worse.

Anyahyacinth · 29/09/2025 16:17

Is this a Reform policy testing post?

It’s the same in lots of schools, at least in my area anyway.

Most halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter. Unlike kosher meat, which never gets mentioned.

I don't care whether my meat has been prayed over or not. I do care whether the animal has been stunned before slaughter. That is what should be on the packaging.

A Muslim acquaintance once told me that Muslims can eat kosher meat, because kosher procedures are compatible with halal, but not vice versa. From some reading up that I've done it seems that things may be a bit more complicated than that, but I think in general the halal process has a bit less ritual mumbo-jumbo in it than kosher. (I'm a fervent atheist who wishes all religions would go away, but I try not to make too many distinctions between them, or rank them in order of dislike.)

As for why only halal ever gets mentioned, it's a complete mystery to me. I mean, the only possible reason that I could think of would be that most Muslims in the UK are brown and most Jews are white, but of course it would be absurd to think that anyone would have a problem with that, given the values of tolerance and love for one's neighbours that we espouse in Our Christian Country™.

Vodkamartini3olives · 29/09/2025 16:18

Have you ever been to an abotuior?. The whole process is pretty horrendous and stressful for the animals. There is no humane way to slaughter an animal. Unless you kill your own animals, you are buying and consuming meat of an animal that experienced a unpleasant end.

flyingsquirrelsagogo · 29/09/2025 16:18

Five Guys stun their meat. As do KFC. Most halal meat sold in the UK is stunned. You can look up what different companies do on line if you’re concerned. Is is just the stunning that bothers you?

OP, you are spreading lies and misinformation

There are 178 Five Guys branches in the UK.

Only three of them are fully halal (B'ham Fort, London Park Royal and M'ter Arndale).

A further 20 serve halal beef but also serve pork.

Why have you twisted this into 'Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal' and what is your agenda?

There's always one 🙄. We're not working with facts, strictly goady rhetoric. Please ask MNHQ to delete your post 😒🤣.

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

Can you explain this comment in more detail ?

Deerfolk · 29/09/2025 16:20

Ohh I’ve always wanted to try Five Guys and now I can.

Money talks, and Muslims spend money and businesses want that money.

itsraining2024 · 29/09/2025 16:20

if you’re so concerned about halal meat watch dawn o porters show on YouTube about halal meat. It’s more kinder than stunning and leaving an animal half dead then having its neck cut…

AutumnLeavesAgain2 · 29/09/2025 16:21

I'm also a bit perplexed about this. In our school it was easier to get Halal meat then gluten free food.

DiscoBob · 29/09/2025 16:21

But what difference does it make to you personally? It's just meat. If killing animals is cruel, then reading out a prayer over a tannoy while doing so doesn't make it any better or worse.

There isn't a specific slaughter method that Catholics are needing to adhere to so I don't really understand why it's such a problem to you.

Cadenza12 · 29/09/2025 16:21

I would and have take my business elsewhere.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 29/09/2025 16:22

I also don't really want my dinner prayed all over... bit weird really when you think about it.

whatistheworld · 29/09/2025 16:23

OverlyFragrant · 29/09/2025 14:58

I don't think the carrots and cabbages are ritually slaughtered without stunning, left to bleed to death whilst being prayed over.....

Edited

you know most Halal meat is stunned now and most meat in supermarkets is halal.

Aren’t the British vegetarian society against…. Meat? The end?

It's the British Veterinary society that are against Halal meat, according to the post you responded to.
