Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

I won’t eat Halal meat - I am a meat eater, and live in a farming community so know exactly where my meat comes from, is slaughtered and butchered.
i will not eat meat which is Halal - it is immoral to me, so I don’t get food from KFC, now Five Guys and any other establishment which sells halal meat.

Nice to have the religious beliefs of a minority being forced onto others without choice, isn’t it.

100% agree. Where has this come from?

There is a large sign on the Wimbledon branch proclaiming that its meat is halal. I can’t imagine that Wimbledon is a special case and, if not already, they will be rolling it out in their other branches.

Yes one of the handful that serve halal beef but still serve pork so not fully halal. I for one am grateful you posted as I didn't know this. Now can go with Muslim friends and family to five guys :). I am a practicing Christian BTW OP if that makes any difference.

Then why do you suppose it’s never Hindu or Sikh culture that is in the spotlight? They have the same complexion, no?

Because there is a wave of anti-Muslim sentiment across the west. Islam is an easy target - 9/11, Afghanistan, ISIS, irregular migration, building of mosques.

Algen · 29/09/2025 16:05

The main issue I have with restaurants offering halal meat only is that it takes away the opportunity to have delicious pork products.

Other than that, I don’t care. I don’t think most halal meat is any more cruel than any other way of dispatching the animal.

Tummyrum · 29/09/2025 14:57

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

Completely irrelevant. Vegan and vegetarian food doesn’t entail cruelty to animals.
I’m not vegan and probably wouldn’t go out of my way to avoid halal food but you can’t deny it’s crueller than the already ‘cruel’ concept of eating fellow animals.

But that would be a halal ONLY restaurant wouldn’t it?

The dead animals appreciate your sacrifice

I have not eaten meat for decades, but I am not a vegan. I would never eat tofu or vegan ice cream, but in reacent years the destruction of quality vegetarian food and it's replacement with vegan filth (vegan cheese FFS) has turned me as 100% anti-vegan as I am 100% anti animals being cruelly killed.

I thought I read that halal food was only meant to be for muslims and is not to be supplied to non-muslims, because it's cruel.

End cruel slaughter.

I am close to advocating for an "end vegan" too, but maybe that;s going to far (not least as there's lot's of great vegetarian food that happens to be vegan).

chachahide · 29/09/2025 16:06

In the UK in 2024, approximately 30.1 million animals were slaughtered without pre-stunning, according to RSPCA and Food Standards Agency (FSA) data referenced in a 2025 Hansard report. This figure represents a significant increase from 25.4 million animals in 2022 and includes 27 million for halal slaughter and 3 million for kosher slaughter.

This isn’t about race — it’s about numbers and animal welfare. The RSPCA is clear: slaughter without pre-stunning is cruel. Yet we’re told we can’t have an honest, grown-up conversation about this because it involves Islam.

It’s an easy target because the religion is the motive behind terrorist attacks on us, it oppresses its women to a horrific dystopian degree, it formed a terror caliphate, many of the terror caliphate members now want to live here, and they want that religion to be brought to us?

justanotherpassword · 29/09/2025 16:07

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 15:01

Because I think allowing a minority religion to have such reach that all meat in the country is slaughtered in a barbaric fashion and unwillingly fed to us is deeply concerning?

Do you have the same concerns with kosher food?

Why ,do they slit the carrot's throats unstunned too?

Happyher · 29/09/2025 16:07

Can’t say I’ve noticed it anywhere and I do live in a city with a large Asian community. Maybe most of their potential customers are Muslim and it’s to attract them. Can’t say it would bother me.

springissprung2025 · 29/09/2025 16:07

I am a meat eater. I am also a Christian. I do not wish to eat halal meat and so I don’t.

Yes, that’s why I said “restaurants offering halal meat only”, which previous posters were giving examples of.

Yes, and if the thread was about that, I would say the same thing (in fact I already have).

I think it's racist to say that jews and muslims need to eat cruelly eaten meat, but the rest of society is ethically superior is and perfectly capable of going veggie or treating animals with less cruelty.

Bobbingtons · 29/09/2025 16:10

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 15:50

Quite. The mental gymnastics that go into justifying the more extreme aspects of Islam are utterly nuts. Everyone else is nasty and right wing apparently; bar countries that publicly execute people, have morality police, treat women as objects, and punish LGBT people with death.

This is just another aspect of such an ideology that I have no desire to kow tow to.

The ‘tolerance’ only flows one way, but nobody will admit it.

Do you feel the same about Christianity, with an increasing number of countries making being gay a criminal offence and in in some cases trying to make it a capital crime? They all use Christian morality as their reasoning?

"the meat must be intended for consumption by Jewish or Muslim people"

Slaughter without stunning

How to legally carry out slaughter without stunning in accordance with religious rites, including how to restrain and bleed the animal.

You are describing militant Islam. Thousands of Muslims in the UK are not involved with terror and are practising their religion quietly.

Kulwinder54 · 29/09/2025 16:11

Sikhism forbids halal meat...it is seen as a barbaric practice. I guess we're too small a group to matter. Looks like I'll have to be vegetarian in thd nesr future
