If saying prayers over a farm animal while it is slaughtered, and/or not stunning it first, means nothing & changes nothing? Then the obvious solution is stop doing it. Problem solved for everyone!
But it clearly does mean something to those who choose to eat halal or kosher meats. And, it is only fair to acknowledge that it also means something to those who don't want to eat them.
It is a clear example of religious practices that have extended far outside a targeted application to only its followers. And the non-believers haven't been actively told about it. Unsurprisingly, almost 97% of individuals who replied to a 2022 Defra Call for Evidence, asked for mandatory slaughter information labelling for meat & poultry.
Many European countries have now banned unstunned (religious) slaughter. These include Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland. In Belgium, it is banned in the Flemish & Wallonian regions.
But by continuing to sell such meat and poultry, unlabelled, in shops and restaurants, removes everyone else's choice to say no, this isn't my religion and these products are not for me.
