Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

A lot of people think it is cleaner and cooks better because it has been bled. Lamb chops on the BBQ definitely taste different when they are halal.

I thought bleeding was part of the slaughter process anyway.

nomas · 02/10/2025 16:12

Ok, they may eat it, but the Sikh method of slaughter forbids stunning.

They're also supposed to carry swords but there's a compromise there too.

KitWyn · 02/10/2025 21:12

FoodieBoobie · 02/10/2025 15:18

Exactly. I think this thread is just an excuse to go bash Muslims. I've never actually tried a kosher meal. I think I'll go to a kosher restaurant sometime soon and try it out.

If saying prayers over a farm animal while it is slaughtered, and/or not stunning it first, means nothing & changes nothing? Then the obvious solution is stop doing it. Problem solved for everyone!

But it clearly does mean something to those who choose to eat halal or kosher meats. And, it is only fair to acknowledge that it also means something to those who don't want to eat them.

It is a clear example of religious practices that have extended far outside a targeted application to only its followers. And the non-believers haven't been actively told about it. Unsurprisingly, almost 97% of individuals who replied to a 2022 Defra Call for Evidence, asked for mandatory slaughter information labelling for meat & poultry.

Many European countries have now banned unstunned (religious) slaughter. These include Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland. In Belgium, it is banned in the Flemish & Wallonian regions.

But by continuing to sell such meat and poultry, unlabelled, in shops and restaurants, removes everyone else's choice to say no, this isn't my religion and these products are not for me.

The other, even more obvious solution, of course, is to stop fretting about it.

Of course, if you dislike the adherents of one or more of the numerous religions circling the globe, you might want to think of a reason for attacking it, and find that gives you pleasure and satisfaction.

Not wanting a person to say a prayer, in private, far from you, is a very strange desire to have.

Not if you believe your god is onmipresent and will know to punish you.

Depends how seriously you take it. Sikhs I knew had a room in their house for their holy book and would only go in with their head covered.
Pagans I knew had an altar room which some of the Christians I know find very worrying.

You may not fret about it, but some people do. Their reasons for doing so vary of course.

Yes, it’s a total logic free position.

And choosing to not pre-stun a farm animal, so it can be fully awake to hear pre-recorded prayers whilst its throat is cut and it bleeds outs, because this is demanded by texts written in the 7th Century CE or 13th Century BCE.

That is a total logic-rich position? Interesting!

LoftyRobin · 03/10/2025 02:51

Kosher meat has a distinct taste as it is salted.

Do you think your god will punish you, if I stand on my bridge and bless the trucks delivering food to your town?

You know that stunning fails on up to 14% of animals, right?

So that’s even more painful.

Is that only the halal ones where it fails?

<eyeroll>

Bands of terrifying Muslims are forcing people with whips and screaming into Five Guys. Oh no sorry, you can just go somewhere else or have the (delicious) fries.

Hahaha, that was a good one

LoftyRobin · 03/10/2025 07:37

No, that’s for UK abattoirs where animals are stunned.

Please don't do that. He might send another flood and I've not had time to built an arc, or worse he might send the locusts again,.

I'd prefer the flood. 😅
I've a few crates.

You are right it doesn't always work. (I'd be genuinely interested to see the reference for a 14% figure, if available?)

That is why the mainstream UK slaughter houses have moved away from chickens being stunned using low-voltage electricity & water baths. Now, the large majority use gas (controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS) with CO2 or inert gases).

Benefits of CAS include that the chickens remain together in the travel crates and no further (often distressing) human handling is needed prior to death.

Freedom from religion allows us to change when better methods, backed by robust evidence, are developed.

Also, in 2018 it was reported, that the majority of non-stun halal slaughter houses had failed hygiene inspections.

"According to data from the Food Standards Agency and the Halal Monitoring Committee, 53% of non-stun halal slaughterhouses have failed inspections compared to just 14% of other slaughter houses."

Maybe we could do a deal. Could you take on the zebras, rhinos and other hoofed animals. Remember only one of each sex and no gay ones (Noah made that mistake with the unicorns).

EmeraldShamrock000 · 03/10/2025 10:03

Aw, makes sense "the unicorns" 🦄
I didn't realise the unicorns were a same sex couple. Everyday is a school day.
They probably identified as non binary confusing Noah.

No that is not logical either for a different reason. That isn't local because cows and pigs don't understand Arabic (or English or any other human language) so have no idea what they are listening to. One thing being illogical doesn't imply that something unrelated is logical. A not equally B does not imply that C equals D.

Edited

But I wouldn't look too far for logic in religion. In Christianity a core premise is that God decided that the only way he could forgive us for our sins was to send his own son and kill him, this is an omi-potent God and that was the only think he could think of with thousands of years of time to prep?

Before I get accused of homophobia against unicorns. The situation that I am homophobic in is the rare occasion when God selects me to save the world by building a massive arc to save the animals. It hasn't come up yet.

You had no other option, if you were turned into a pillar of salt for allowing that to happen next door you'd only have yourself to blame. You wouldn't even stay as a warning to others if there was a flood later, but there shouldn't be because 🌈.

The water bath thing was truly grim.

Reminds me of a joke:
I wanted a bike but it would be wrong to pray for my own gain, so I stole one and prayed for forgiveness.
