Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

Oh and all the people who do eat meat that isn’t halal. Do you genuinely think you’re bothered about animal welfare? Like, really? Have you seen non-halal abattoirs? Farms for meat animals? They aren’t very nice.

It’s a bit different than getting hung upside down and having their throat slit 🙄

I used to live next to a halal camel abattoir in the Middle East and would hear them screaming during the night.

Which is having the most negative effect, would you say?

Christianity.

Have you heard of the Equality Act? Other religions are also protected characteristics, not just Islam.

The flaw in that argument is that not all religious have associated rligious dietary requirements in terms of how their meat is slaughtered. Judaism and Islam do. Christianity does not. There is therefore no protection under the Equality Act for a Christian who does not want to eat halal meat, because their religion does not require them to avoid it.

Bloozie · 29/09/2025 18:11

It's kosher meat that flat out forbids even the stunning of an animal.

Most halal meat in the UK is from animals that were stunned before slaughter.

Yes, there are (too many) cases when the stunning fails. Same with animals that get a bolt to the brain though. These are very murky moral waters and the only truly humane conclusion to reach is not to eat meat.

But it's just 3 Five Guys restaurants, OP. Quit trying to cause more fear, hatred and division. There's enough of it out there already. Get a different hobby. Brisk walking is nice.

tunainatin · 29/09/2025 18:11

Halal meat can hardly be described as a trend (unless trends last 1400 years). I presume restaurants are simply responding to demand. If you would prefer to retain the choice of having non-Halal meat, you could raise this with the restaurant - if enough people do this perhaps they will give a choice?

Well i am not eating my dog so this is irrelevant, even if you think you are making a valid point.

Do you really think that what you would choose as the kindest option for your dog or cat, isn't also the kindest option we should choose for a cow or sheep?

We - humans too - are all mammals. Dogs, cats, sheep and cows will all suffer more if they are slaughtered without stunning.

It's indefensible. Being destined for food production doesn't mean the cow or sheep won't be terrified and in great pain when it is fully conscious and its throat is cut.

Thank you for speaking out on this. It's a creeping thing that I have a lot of issues with. The meat industry is pretty grim to start with, let alone removing the little guards in place that make animal welfare at least of some concern. I cannot believe that the UK has been so so weak on so many issues that fundamentally are in opposition to women's rights, animal rights and our democratic culture. Of course the latest threat to women's rights was a total curveball with the massive campaign to trying and erase women but that's for another post.

I notice that a lot of supermarkets are actively promoting Islamic holidays now, but then I assume it is all just down to what makes them money. They all jumped on that trans ship as well.

They also promote Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, Chinese and pagan holidays alongside Christian holidays as well as celebrating secular holidays, large sporting events and hot weather - do you have a problem with all of those too?

For what it’s worth I’m vegetarian but halal meat is much much crueler. The animals aren’t stunned first. I guess that’s what people object to! They are sentient beings and they feel

They ARE stunned first if the meat is for public use

I was raised Catholic. Islam is far from the worst.

Halfaday · 29/09/2025 18:12

Op do you have children? And if so, do you spout the anger you spread all over mumsnet at so much in society (all involving immigration and religion) to them?

A racist thread, which is pretending (as they all do) to be otherwise.

Of course the M word can only ever be uttered in favourable terms. Anything else is raaacist. Are white Muslims not real Muslims in your eyes, can real Muslims only be one colour? Now that would be bloody racist,

tempnew · 29/09/2025 18:13

I'm guessing it is a business decision to appeal to a wider customer base.

Ticked all the "I'm not racist" boxes there. Well done you.

Of course not, look at Bosnia (which was horrific).

Islam is no different to any other religion, theologically. But the way its followers interpret it is just wildly different, terrifying and not in keeping with modern principles.

pointythings · 29/09/2025 18:14

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 18:06

The point is there should be a choice for non halal meat instead of just halal.

If it's pre stunned (and the halal meat served in schools and hospitals will be in order to comply with legal requirements), why? There's no difference in terms of animal welfare in comparison with non halal slaughter.

Some verses:

Some verses taken entirely out of context. 9:5 for instance is in reference to a specific war, during which treaties were broken. Infidels aren't mentioned; polytheists are.

Won’t be going to Five Guys again!!

Absolutely - look at what Christianity is doing in the US.

88% of halal meat is stunned.
So what is you object to?

I’m objecting to hypocrisy. I’m not objecting to halal. No slaughter is nice . Halal is not worse than non halal.

Of course Christian can’t support the eating of meat prayed over under Islam. It is not just a method of killing, it is also a religious ritual. How do you not get that?

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 18:16

Coffeeishot · 29/09/2025 18:09

Well there usually is you just need to find another butcher or five guys or wherever. These places are telling you that their beef and chicken is Halal so you can make a choice , and it gives Muslims a place to eat food.

But schools, hospitals. Some council trusts are just all halal meats. Being forced to have it is completely different.
Why isn't there a choice of non halal meat and halal...

Simplestars · 29/09/2025 18:17

@SouthernFashionista
Did you know kosher meat also is killed in similar fashion.

Why not address all the animals killed in this way?

Love the way you excluded I'm not a racist with ' i'm a black woman with muslim friends BTW'.
