Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

The difference between meat and halal meat means squat all to me. Both involve some pretty unpleasant processes to get there that I prefer not to think about and instead I just enjoy!

Then you are part of the problem

The uproar about halal is misplaced due to lack of knowledge. Having worked in the supermarket/ food retail for a long time i recommend people seriously look at standard non halal abattoir practices. Also the hours of transport animals undertake. Please see requirements fr halal in the picture. If you are horrified by halal you should be vegetarian or only buy organic locally produced and slaughtered meat.

exactly - there is a lot of misinformation out there and people jump on the bandwagon without research or education

For what it’s worth I’m vegetarian but halal meat is much much crueler. The animals aren’t stunned first. I guess that’s what people object to! They are sentient beings and they feel

That's not true.

It is the fact that some establishments are all halal meat only, and no other options for non halal meat. So it seems like other faiths have to 'put up and shut up' in some cases.

No one has to put up and shut up when it comes to ‘establishments’, they can just choose not to go to them.

I don’t expect fish or steak restaurants to have an equal selection of good quality vegetarian options, so I just choose not to go to them. Same as personally, I choose not to go to fried chicken shops that are halal. We are all free to choose where we go to eat. Halal restaurants existing does not stop non halal restaurants existing.

What are these 'religious purposes' that means halal meat good enough for ordinary Muslims, now requires the animal to be fully awake when their throat is slit and they bleed to death?

I'm genuinely interested to understand the need.

Meals served in mosques and synagogues.

I think the answer to your question is Islam.

That's not true.

Be honest. If an animal you cared about had to be put down, would you choose?

  • Stunning and then bolt fired through the brain
  • Stunning then throat slit
  • Throat slit only

Injection of an overdose of an anaesthetic is not a possibility. Just the 3 above. What option is the least worst?

Are people eating this pet afterwards?

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

What a ridiculous post. What on earth has a Vegan dish got to do with how an animal is slaughtered ?

CatchingtheCat · 29/09/2025 18:04

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 17:51

If that is the case why can't the Muslims eat non halal meat?

For the same reasons other religions can’t eat Halal meet - because Halal meet also goes through a religious ritual.

Posters seem very quick to dismiss believers of other faiths not wanting their meat to have gone through an Islamic ritual but cry ‘Islamophobia’ at the suggestion that Muslims should not have it.

Some Jewish & Muslim people are more strict than others.

No the answer to the question is market forces - whichever sells the most meat.

Well i am not eating my dog so this is irrelevant, even if you think you are making a valid point.

Thats fine people don't have to eat it they can choose something else to eat?

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 18:06

pointythings · 29/09/2025 17:55

No, they don 't. When it comes to restaurants, they can eat elsewhere. When it comes to schools, they can choose the vegetarian option or bring a packed lunch. In hospitals they can get their relatives to bring in food, or again choose the vegetarian option.

The point is there should be a choice for non halal meat instead of just halal.

ChainStress · 29/09/2025 18:07

LoveItaly · 29/09/2025 17:55

This bothers me too, I noticed it yesterday when trying to find somewhere to eat in Leeds. I don’t eat much meat anyway, but it is nice to have some on occasion and I won’t knowingly eat halal meat. I can understand it makes sense in predominantly Muslim areas, but it seems to be becoming the norm everywhere, especially in chain restaurants.

Most big cities are becoming predominantly Muslim areas. The Muslim population is the fastest growing population in any city. No value judgements from me but this shift in demographic will bring social change. It’s up to each individual to decide if they think that change is for the best.

Have you heard of the Equality Act? Other religions are also protected characteristics, not just Islam.

Totally agree. Stunning an animal doesn't make it any nicer as i can't see how being electriced isn't painful.
I do believe at lot if it is down to racism as if people were really bothered about animal welfare they'd be vegetarian

Well there usually is you just need to find another butcher or five guys or wherever. These places are telling you that their beef and chicken is Halal so you can make a choice , and it gives Muslims a place to eat food.

Well the animal is killed in each scenario.
Let's not pretend one is more civilized than the other.

@SouthernFashionista. Why do have to mention you are black and have muslim friends?
I'm sure the animals really don't care for these credentials.
