Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

Both options involve the end of life. And pretty brutally

and that’s that.

Exactly. OP do not pretend that non halal abattoirs offer any ‘ comfort’ at all.

People who don’t want to eat Halal can go to one of the hundreds of 5 Guys that have non-Halal options.

Some school councils are just all halal meat. Some hospital trusts.
Why shouldn't there be a choice? Why can't the Muslims just eat non halal food ?

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

As a vegetarian, yes, I am annoyed at all the vegetarian choices being turned into vegan ones!

My God says that if I eat food corrupted by the false Gods I will go to Hell for eternity, Or are do my beliefs not matter?

What religion are you? I don't even know Christians who say this? Or are you Jewish, if you're Jewish eat kosher

88% of halal meat is stunned.

I admire your commitment to the stats...I have noticed that none of them bother to engage with it!

I do understand it is difficult to let facts get in the way of a good rage bait rant though 😐

Take that up with Five Guys - an American owned business.

Tell them you think every single food establishment in the UK should sell pork and alcohol no exceptions….

How would you define food establishment? Is it back to the "what is a substantial meal" question of COVID times? Whats the status of Scotch eggs in this...

Economies of scale.
Given 88% of halal meat is stunned what is it you are objecting to?

Sparks654 · 29/09/2025 17:36

Thank you for speaking out on this. It's a creeping thing that I have a lot of issues with. The meat industry is pretty grim to start with, let alone removing the little guards in place that make animal welfare at least of some concern. I cannot believe that the UK has been so so weak on so many issues that fundamentally are in opposition to women's rights, animal rights and our democratic culture. Of course the latest threat to women's rights was a total curveball with the massive campaign to trying and erase women but that's for another post.

I notice that a lot of supermarkets are actively promoting Islamic holidays now, but then I assume it is all just down to what makes them money. They all jumped on that trans ship as well.

wordler · 29/09/2025 17:27

Most organic meat is killed the same way as non organic. Also you can get organic halal meat.

Killed perhaps, but from my knowledge of people who work as farm inspectors in the veterinary field, the organic farm living standards are quite a bit better. For example calves stay longer with their mother, cows are milked a bit less and birth less frequently. Chickens are given more space and outdoor access.

But again, why can't Muslim children just eat non halal meat ?

CopperWhite · 29/09/2025 17:39

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 17:26

I am vegetarian and quite frankly glad. But why should they just serve halal meat? Why can't they just serve normal meat and make the Muslims eat it? Why should non muslims be forced to eat halal meat if it's the only option ?

I’m glad to be vegetarian too.

Non Muslims aren’t forced to eat halal meat. They have the same choices you and I have about eating meat. If they want to eat meat, then unless they already check out the welfare standards and slaughter methods for every bit of meat they ever consume, it is unlikely to make any difference to them. Whereas it would make a difference to someone with particular religious beliefs, which are a protected characteristic.

What actual difference does it make what background noise was going on in the slaughter house when you’re about to eat a dead animal anyway? It’s pretty much the same thing in this country otherwise.

You don’t have any valid reason for so passionately wanting non Muslim children to be able to choose non halal meat. The only possible reason you don’t want Muslims to be catered for is that you don’t like them. They are all very different you know. Just like people from other or no religion.

Plenty of bacon on offer wat our hotel when we were in Morocco - and in some of the bigger supermarkets!

Money talks

Five Guys is not a School Council.

Acommonreader · 29/09/2025 17:41

QuestioningQuorn · 29/09/2025 15:30

Well of course. I eat meat. Doesn’t mean I wish animals to suffer any more than necessary.

And it is annoying because there have been times recently where we have had to buy halal meat. It’s the cheaper option in supermarkets and some months have been tough. Personally I think it should be banned.

So animals can suffer as much as you deem ‘necessary ‘ and you’ll forgo your usual moral objection when it’s a cheaper option. It must be handy having such flexible morals!

It is the fact that some establishments are all halal meat only, and no other options for non halal meat. So it seems like other faiths have to 'put up and shut up' in some cases.

Because I think allowing a minority religion to have such reach that all meat in the country is slaughtered in a barbaric fashion and unwillingly fed to us is deeply concerning?

I agree. I don’t want halal.

You have a choice where you spend your money.
Businesses operate to make money. If selling halal meat loses them money they will change policy.

Not according to EU law:
https://www.euromeatnews.com/Article-Halal-meat-cannot-be-certified-as-organic-under-the-EU-law/2637

Too bad we're not in the EU any more. The UK used to pride itself on having higher standards of animal welfare.

That just refers to meat which has not been pre stunned. So for the UK if the organic meat was processed as halal but with stunning then it could still be labled organic.

GloryFades · 29/09/2025 17:43

I thought most halal meats in the UK were stun killed now. How are non halal cows slaughtered? From a quick look online it still looks to be by cutting the throat of animals.

I’ve definitely heard stories of non halal abattoirs becoming halal just by playing a prayer over speakers - so I don’t understand (stunning aside) why halal is worse?

TicklishReader · 29/09/2025 17:43

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 16:24

We’ve had mobs surrounding schools baying for the blood of teachers for showing a cartoon of ‘the Prophet’. People are in hiding.

Similar mobs have surrounded schools to demand LGBT tolerance should not be taught.

A mother was forced to make a grovelling apology because her son, who has special needs, dropped a Koran by accident.

A man was slashed at with a knife for exercising his free speech by burning a Koran (case from this week).

In countries with an Islamic majority, they have become a theocracy with terrible human rights bar a small minority (Lebanon and Malaysia really). Why do you suppose this would be different here, if it came to that?

Evidence?

Whoknowshey · 29/09/2025 17:45

I think it depends on why you are concerned and how much you know about halal .

I was never comfortable with the idea of it as all I knew was that an animal had its throat slit and was left to drain of blood and die.

However, if you look into it most of the halal meat in the uk ( around 90% ) is done in a more humane way , where the animal is stunned and unconscious at the time it is slaughtered therefore not feeling pain.

It is also required by Muslim law for halal meat that the animal is well cared for prior to slaughter , no animal is slaughtered in the presence of another animal and it is well fed and hydrated.

When you look into it more , you will find that animals killed for non halal meat can be subject to horrendous conditions for the entirety of their life. Not all, but a lot.

on the face of it I would say an animal living a good life then being stunned and rendered unconscious for halal meat would be better than living a life of misery before being killed. It all depends really on the use of stunning. If an animal is unconscious when being slaughtered in the halal way then that way shows a lot more respect for the animal. However, not being stunned I think it’s extremely inhumane .

The remaining 12%?

The remaining 12%?

But that's not the meat in the majority of restaurants and supermarkets.
