Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

They’re not just catering to Muslims. They cater to children with allergies and who are vegetarian. School kitchens cater for lots of different needs. Why is it only the Muslim ones that you have a problem with?

I think it’s the lack of reverse tolerance. People are less likely to tolerate a population that do not tolerate them.

I am vegetarian and quite frankly glad. But why should they just serve halal meat? Why can't they just serve normal meat and make the Muslims eat it? Why should non muslims be forced to eat halal meat if it's the only option ?

YADNBU. It is also illegal to slaughter animals this way unless they are for consumption by Muslims - which the vast majority of five guys is not.

Edited

I used to work for my local police forces catering team. Our chicken was halal and despite serving vast amounts of it over the years, funnily enough I've managed to evade arrest.

😂😂😂

That's so weird that Five Guys do then. Are they seen as more of a restaurant than a fast food place?

I think its considered a rung above fast food. Bit like the difference between a chicken shack and Nandos.
(NB I havent been in Five Guys but my son used to go with his friends occasionally so it might have lost in translation a bit!)

This is why I only eat organic meat.

Most organic meat is killed the same way as non organic. Also you can get organic halal meat.

You need extra licenses to serve alcohol anyway. Some restaurants let customers bring their own bottle. Some go through the hassle of the alcohol license..some (including most Muslim rum restaurants and fast food style places) don't do alcohol on the premises at all. It's always been like that.

There are loads of Muslim owned restaurants that serve alcohol. Turkish, Indian (mostly Bangladeshi owned) for example

You’re not tolerant either so why are you worried about others acting like you?

anniegun · 29/09/2025 17:28

Halal meat is pre-stunned in the UK. The difference is animal welfare is negligable. Its just an excuse for racists to get angry

Sunbeam01 · 29/09/2025 17:22

Of course Muslims do not need to eat pork or drink alcohol. But why shouldn't English people be allowed to if they choose? What is the issue with that?

Genuine question.

Five guys sells alcohol and pork in England as alcohol and pork are part of our culture when eating out.

Are we saying that is not part of the English culture in 3 stores in England? And why is that?

Because most restaurant kitchens are not set up to cater for both halal and non halal. It requires too much space and equipment.

McDonalds trialled it but couldn’t do it.

So restaurants need to assess their target demographic in each town to see what would be most profitable.

People who don’t want to eat Halal can go to one of the hundreds of 5 Guys that have non-Halal options.

My God doesn't forgive. He is more of the flood the world type God.

Is this Zeus we are talking about?

I’m sitting here trying to work out which religion sends you to hell because the slaughterer was catching up with their daily decade of the rosary whilst working during Lent.

My God says that if I eat food corrupted by the false Gods I will go to Hell for eternity, Or are do my beliefs not matter?

What a very odd god you worship.

The difference between meat and halal meat means squat all to me. Both involve some pretty unpleasant processes to get there that I prefer not to think about and instead I just enjoy!

I'm a vegetarian; largely because I could never work in a slaughterhouse. And I shouldn't live in a way that requires other people to do things I would find unbearable.

However, at least, all farm animals killed for food in the UK, MUST be stunned first. But, shockingly, the UK exempts halal and kosher slaughter from this requirement.

Animals will take some time to lose consciousness and die after their throat is cut. They will be very frightened during the process, and in terrible pain.

'Not stunning' is not a religious absolute, Muslim clerics views vary. So the large majority of halal meat in the UK is already produced by stunning the animal first (around 88%). So, why not all?

The UK Government post-Brexit, has had the option to remove the exception for halal and kosher slaughter, required under EU Legislation (2013) addressing Animal Welfare.

If I were Starmer I would remove this religious exemption. Currently he (and Labour) have zero hope of winning the next election. In some ways this must be very freeing.

Our PM's dropped the figurative souffle, and it's not just sunken, but all over the floor. So, I hope the Digital ID Cards proposal and murmurings on banning Cousin Marriage mean he will just now do what he believes is right.

I do hope so!

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

What's wrong with vegan or vegetarian food production? Halal is cruelty to animals.

Acommonreader · 29/09/2025 17:32

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 15:01

Because I think allowing a minority religion to have such reach that all meat in the country is slaughtered in a barbaric fashion and unwillingly fed to us is deeply concerning?

Non halal slaughter is not exactly pleasant! There’s not much difference. I eat organic local farm meat only . Non halal supermarket meat transport and slaughter is hideous. But I suspect most are not bothered.

I don't want anyone praying to a false god over any feed that I'm going to eat. Why should I go to hell because of someone elses beliefs.

I presume by the way you talk about hell and your god being a 'flood the earth' type that you are Christian, and therefore understand that the Jewish god, Christian god and Muslim god are one and the same?

Take that up with Five Guys - an American owned business.

Tell them you think every single food establishment in the UK should sell pork and alcohol no exceptions….

People who don’t want to eat Halal can go to one of the hundreds of 5 Guys that have non-Halal options.

And if they don't want to support a firm that commits unnecessary cruelty to animals, they boycott 5 Guys. It's the firm, not the individual branch, that makes these decisions.

I worked for 20 years in a school with 100% Muslim pupils and I didn't feel remotely untolerated.

They were quite excited when the World Cup came round and we could watch the football instead of maths and many had England shirts.

They wanted their kids to get qualifications and good jobs/university places/ a nice 3-bed semi in East Ham or Ilford.

My experience doesnt remotely chome with your perception of Muslims in the UK.

That too.

I just don’t see why people are whining that a company offers Halal in three branches.
