Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

What do you mean go to hell ?

I think this poster means that she thinks she will go to hell if she eats meat that has had Islamic prayers said over it. As opposed to meat that has been sworn over, or has had talk about the football over it from tired underpaid abattoir workers. No, it doesn't make sense to me either.

@Mademetoxic we do have a choice. We check out the restaurant before going there. Not rocket science.

As for 'restaurants not serving alcohol bla bla bla integration' - plenty of restaurants don't serve alcohol. If you can't handle a meal without alcohol, maybe you have a problem.

My God says that if I eat food corrupted by the false Gods I will go to Hell for eternity, Or are do my beliefs not matter?

I have relatives who worked in abbatoirs so I'm not coming at this from a bleeding heart vegan perspective but...

Stunning is pretty brutal too. When it works it's instant but it does fail. Also, it's hard to know exactly what it's like really from a cows perspective. Sometimes post stunning they will still be twitching but that's likely muscle spams not consciousness. But stunning isn't some gentle injection while the animal drifts of to sleep. It's a great big bolt gun to the temple while the animals on a conveyor belt with hundreds of other cows.

Killing animals for food is brutal. Doing it in an industrial setting is more brutal. But I still eat meat. I've no idea whether the Halal process is better or worse from the cows perspective.

Just adding I just checked and even halal meat is prestunned in the UK. So I really don't see the difference from an animal welfare perspective anyway.

We don't. School children don't. Why should they just cater for the Muslims? Why can't Muslims children just eat non halal food, imagine if they did that.
Why isn't there a choice for schools, hospitals etc?

Tight fisted? I don't understand the point you are trying to make?

As for Five Guys USA - I am talking about England. American culture is different to English culture. We are not the same. Does that have to be said?

Does it sound like integration to you?

Or more division?

Edited

Not the point of the thread but Five Guys serve alcohol in the UK? Do other fast food burger places serve alcohol in the UK now?

You believe that halal meat will send you to hell?

I guess you have to choose different restaurants to the three Five Guys.

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 17:20

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2025 17:18

its a business decision for the restaurant chain.

for school dinners i imagine its a matter of economies of scale.
And as I have said - 88% are stunned so what is the actual issue with the meat?

It's just wrong. People should have a choice and it shouldn't be forced upon anyone. Muslim children could just eat non halal meat if we should have to put up and shut up.

Then you will need to be vegetarian, because you cannot guarantee that a worker in a standard abattoir will meet your religious criteria. Even then you might have a problem, because you cannot guarantee religious purity in the UK food supply chain.

Nobody's made up stories they choose to believe are real matter.

I am sure God will forgive you. But if you are really concerned about your prospects in the after-life, go veggie.

My God doesn't forgive. He is more of the flood the world type God.

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

how is this in anyway cruel? Can you go through both processes of slaughtering of meat and explain why you don't consider there is a difference in the slaughter method?

I suspect Muslim children have had to eat non halal foods for years.

pretty sure my Sainsbury’s non halal steak tonight didn’t involve the abattoir workers praying!!

They're not prayed over. There's a recording of the words playing on a loop.

nomas · 29/09/2025 17:16

The point is you have the choice a thousand eateries. How does a few halal branches of Five Guys affect you?

And Five Guys is an American company. You seem fine with them not serving alcohol at all in American but a few branches in the UK not seeking alcohols inspires a revolution in you!

Integration does not mean Muslims eating pork or drinking alcohol!

Of course Muslims do not need to eat pork or drink alcohol. But why shouldn't English people be allowed to if they choose? What is the issue with that?

Genuine question.

Five guys sells alcohol and pork in England as alcohol and pork are part of our culture when eating out.

Are we saying that is not part of the English culture in 3 stores in England? And why is that?

pointythings · 29/09/2025 17:22

This has been answered - it's about economies of scale. Unless you want hospitals to spend more of their budgets on (already appalling) food, and the price of school meals to double, this is where we're at.

The 'halal' meat servied in schools and hospitals is likely to be the stunned kind, so where is the problem?

You need extra licenses to serve alcohol anyway. Some restaurants let customers bring their own bottle. Some go through the hassle of the alcohol license..some (including most Muslim rum restaurants and fast food style places) don't do alcohol on the premises at all. It's always been like that.

It's because she can't hide her racism behind fake animal welfare concerns.

They’re not just catering to Muslims. They cater to children with allergies and who are vegetarian. School kitchens cater for lots of different needs. Why is it only the Muslim ones that you have a problem with?

This is why I only eat organic meat.
