Growing trend for halal meat

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

You’re on another thread saying you would intervene if somebody was exercising their right to freedom of expression by burning a Koran because you think they should show respect to the religion.

I see you.

Edited

Oh don't be daft. What I said on that thread was that I would speak out if someone was burning the holy book of any religion, not just Islam. Don't twist my words. I said 'spoken to', not that I would intervene. Yes, I would express to that person that they were being rude and intolerant - no matter which holy book they were burning.

Maligning people by twisting their words only works if you can be really sure they can't prove you wrong...

Imagine the outcry of Muslim children being given non halal meat. We should have a choice.

Five Guys is a private business.

Thats the third time you've posted that.

88% of halal meat is stunned first according to the RSPCA. So what exactly is your objection?

Biblio4 · 29/09/2025 17:12

Around 88% of animals slaughtered in the UK for Halal are stunned first.
From the RSPCA website
I think most people believe all halal meat is not stunned.
If you're concerned about this issue, are you concerned about animal rights generally? If not, perhaps there's another aspect to it driving your "concern"...

MyDeftDuck · 29/09/2025 17:12

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/09/2025 15:01

Oh and all the people who do eat meat that isn’t halal. Do you genuinely think you’re bothered about animal welfare? Like, really? Have you seen non-halal abattoirs? Farms for meat animals? They aren’t very nice.

Neither are the poultry killing sheds…..disgusting places ….and people complain about individuals carrying chickens by their feet……they want to pay a visit to one of these places and see how the birds are manhandled before being fastened by their feet ready for slaughter. At least they’re stunned first though, if their heads make contact of course, otherwise their throats are cut when fully conscious!

FoodieBoobie · 29/09/2025 17:12

I remember a thread (I think in 2024) where OP was angry that a school sold halal meat only and didn't want her daughter having any of it

Bumblebee72 · 29/09/2025 17:13

I don't want anyone praying to a false god over any feed that I'm going to eat. Why should I go to hell because of someone elses beliefs.

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2025 17:13

Well if you don't believe in the religion why would you expect to go to hell?

PandoraSocks · 29/09/2025 17:14

Blueberry111 · 29/09/2025 16:46

Omg you dimwits. England and Wales population of Muslims is 6.5%! What are you so scared of? It’s a tiny minority of this country. Unless you’re a vegan or your religion says not to eat other meat I can’t understand why you have an issue with this. Clearly you people have no clue about halal meat, it’s ment to be the cleanest meat with least bacteria and ment to cut in a way to hurt the animal the least way, hence why it’s ment to be cut by a sharp knife in one cut so it doesn’t hurt the animal by going back and forth. And drain the blood so no bacteria can build. This is the actual way. But in the uk the halal meat isn’t even proper halal, it’s more of a marketing gimmick. Because all meat is stunned, and then cut and no guarantee of all blood being drained. Infact some animals die whilst getting stunned which keeps the blood inside so no it’s not even proper Halal. But just the ‘name’ of halal will ruffle the feathers of islamophobes without them even bothering to research. Go do something useful with your life , honestly.

I think this pretty much wins the thread and we can all go home now.

Everanewbie · 29/09/2025 16:37

Pre-stunned? What's that, a stunning before the stunning? I suppose its better than being post-stunned.

The type of person defending halal slaughter are likely to be front of the queue to attack country pursuits for being cruel. But thats ok, thats privileged white men. They're evil. All about the animal rights until its the 'oppressed minority' dishing out the cruelty.

Huh? I don’t get your post?
Pre stunning is a common term for an animal being stunned before slaughter. It’s what happens to the vast majority. I explained the difference in the types of stunning in my first post.
I do not understand your points on the rest.

The difference between meat and halal meat means squat all to me. Both involve some pretty unpleasant processes to get there that I prefer not to think about and instead I just enjoy!

Saying this with love! It sounds like you care about animal suffering and wish it didnt happen. Maybe instead of ignoring it you could eat things that align with your views? Lots of resources out there!

If that is the case why can't Muslims eat non halal meat then?? Why should we have to cater for their needs and not everyone else's?

Tight fisted? I don't understand the point you are trying to make?

As for Five Guys USA - I am talking about England. American culture is different to English culture. We are not the same. Does that have to be said?

Does it sound like integration to you?

Or more division?

Are people required to eat Pork and drink alcohol in the UK?

The point is you have the choice a thousand eateries. How does a few halal branches of Five Guys affect you?

And Five Guys is an American company. You seem fine with them not serving alcohol at all in American but a few branches in the UK not seeking alcohols inspires a revolution in you!

Integration does not mean Muslims eating pork or drinking alcohol!

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 16:43

We do not expect Muslim countries to give us bacon sandwiches, and I bet if we asked we would just get a lucky of disgust. So why is this any different.
We are not a Muslim country.

(I am vegetarian)

You would likely be given a sandwich made with turkey. Not a look of disgust.

persephonia · 29/09/2025 17:16

GCITC · 29/09/2025 15:17

Most halal meat in the UK is stunned before slaughter. Unlike kosher meat, which never gets mentioned.

I don't care whether my meat has been prayed over or not. I do care whether the animal has been stunned before slaughter. That is what should be on the packaging.

I have relatives who worked in abbatoirs so I'm not coming at this from a bleeding heart vegan perspective but...

Stunning is pretty brutal too. When it works it's instant but it does fail. Also, it's hard to know exactly what it's like really from a cows perspective. Sometimes post stunning they will still be twitching but that's likely muscle spams not consciousness. But stunning isn't some gentle injection while the animal drifts of to sleep. It's a great big bolt gun to the temple while the animals on a conveyor belt with hundreds of other cows.

Killing animals for food is brutal. Doing it in an industrial setting is more brutal. But I still eat meat. I've no idea whether the Halal process is better or worse from the cows perspective.

Because it's in their religion to only have meat slaughtered in a specific way. They can eat meat slaughtered by Muslims, Jews (kosher) and Christians.

I am sure God will forgive you. But if you are really concerned about your prospects in the after-life, go veggie.

We are farmers, we rear sheep for meat. The thought of our animals being killed in this way is abhorrent.

Exactly this. People don't give a shiny shit until the word halal is mentioned.

As if all the outraged posters are vegan or eating locally sourced, organic high welfare neat

its a business decision for the restaurant chain.

for school dinners i imagine its a matter of economies of scale.
And as I have said - 88% are stunned so what is the actual issue with the meat?
