Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

Did you get similarly exercised when you saw the proliferation of restaurants introducing vegan and vegetarian options?

There's a big difference between a vegetarian option and no choice but to eat Halal meat.

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2025 16:46

Grammarnut · 29/09/2025 16:32

It's not Islamophobic to object to killing animals for meat without UK regulations on humane killing being followed.

Which regulations are not being followed?

Uggbootsforever · 29/09/2025 16:46

samlett · 29/09/2025 16:42

So in a nutshell, you don't like Muslims?

Not Muslims, Islamism. I don’t like Islamism.

Blueberry111 · 29/09/2025 16:46

Omg you dimwits. England and Wales population of Muslims is 6.5%! What are you so scared of? It’s a tiny minority of this country. Unless you’re a vegan or your religion says not to eat other meat I can’t understand why you have an issue with this. Clearly you people have no clue about halal meat, it’s ment to be the cleanest meat with least bacteria and ment to cut in a way to hurt the animal the least way, hence why it’s ment to be cut by a sharp knife in one cut so it doesn’t hurt the animal by going back and forth. And drain the blood so no bacteria can build. This is the actual way. But in the uk the halal meat isn’t even proper halal, it’s more of a marketing gimmick. Because all meat is stunned, and then cut and no guarantee of all blood being drained. Infact some animals die whilst getting stunned which keeps the blood inside so no it’s not even proper Halal. But just the ‘name’ of halal will ruffle the feathers of islamophobes without them even bothering to research. Go do something useful with your life , honestly.

6.5% versus 3% 20 years ago. The projection is currently that this will be 17% by 2050. Can you not see the trend?

I am not innumerate. Muslim women are having more children than atheist/agnostic/Christian women so of course the trend is upwards, even without immigration.

CatchingtheCat · 29/09/2025 16:47

samlett · 29/09/2025 16:45

I see. It's like saying I don't dislike Blacks, just Blackness.

Don’t be ridiculous. Being black is not a dangerous religious belief. It is just a shade of skin.

So why do you think the UK eventually becoming another Islamic theocracy is so unlikely?

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 16:43

We do not expect Muslim countries to give us bacon sandwiches, and I bet if we asked we would just get a lucky of disgust. So why is this any different.
We are not a Muslim country.

(I am vegetarian)

I mean it's the British business giving the halal meat, presumably as it's a more profitable choice for them. I doubt anyone went to Five Guys wielding a gun and asking for halal. Just vote with your feet if you don't like it. All this mentions of demanding and bacon sandwiches etc is painting you in a certain unflattering light.

BloominNora · 29/09/2025 16:48

LeaderBee · 29/09/2025 15:07

Think of it this way.

If you were going to be killed would you prefer to be conscious during the process or not?

The vast majority of animals slaughtered under Halal in the UK are stunned - the only real difference between mass produced halal meat and non-halal meat is the prayer and the animal facing mecca as it is killed.

Only when meat is being produced specifically for a religious community is the animal allowed to be killed without being stunned. That won't include the meat you see in mainstream supermarkets and restaurants.

Given this, I presume that anyone who is still getting het up by the small number of establishments and temples etc that may use non-stunned halal meat are protesting about meat produced under kosher rules as well?

nomas · 29/09/2025 16:49

Kulwinder54 · 29/09/2025 16:32

instant death versus prolonged bleed out??

Halal slaughter is a swift cut to the jugular throat, which causes the animal to lose consciousness immediately.

In what way do you imagine Sikh Jhatka killing (cutting the head) is different?

No method of slaughter is instantaneous.

If it is just such a small minority then why isn’t Halal meat only restricted to that minority (as it the law)?

And if Islam has so little impact then why the need to shut down criticism with cries of ‘phobia!

McDonalds doesn't have any halal branches in the UK, do you see Muslims outside protesting?

Muslims eat where their custom is welcome, they don't demand it.

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2025 16:53

Its a business decision for the restaurant chain.

Other restaurants are available.

If the company thinks it is losing out by serving halal meat it will change its decision.

Free market economy etc.

I am vegetarian and would never eat a bacon sandwich. But at the end of the day we are not a Muslim country believe it or not.

Because businesses have identified a target market of Muslims in some cities and want to earn money!

No business has been mandated to serve halal, case in point being McDonalds and Burger King!

Battical · 29/09/2025 16:53

It’s clearly just a commercial decision, isn’t it?

If you’re selling something you want to make it suitable and accessible for as many people as possible.

You're right, I don’t see any Muslims demanding everywhere goes halal. However, they’re much less likely to eat somewhere that doesn’t serve halal, so it makes commercial sense to sell it, especially in big cities.

Tell me then why the local council school meals are all halal then? Why isn't there a choice?
Some council hospitals are just halal only too.

nomas · 29/09/2025 15:08

OP, you are spreading lies and misinformation

There are 178 Five Guys branches in the UK.

Only three of them are fully halal (B'ham Fort, London Park Royal and M'ter Arndale).

A further 20 serve halal beef but also serve pork.

Why have you twisted this into 'Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal' and what is your agenda?

https://fiveguys.co.uk/halal/

Why aren't they serving alcohol in these stores?

Why aren't they serving pork at these stores?

Integration at it's finest.

For the obvious point that it would uneconomic for school dinner providers to have to double up.

Given it is only legal for meat to be slaughtered Halal for Muslims, if five guys are only selling Halal meat the legally they should not be selling any burgers to non-Muslims. Do you think that is ok? That a business only serve Muslims in the UK?

Can you direct me to that bit of Parliamentary legislation?

Why are you bothered and concerned on a personal level?

That’s kind of the premiss of society

dollyblue01 · 29/09/2025 16:57

I actively now avoid anywhere that advertises halal meat, yes I eat meat but at least I have hope that the poor animal hasn’t suffered too much and not the way the animals used for halal
meat have, I have unknowingly tried it before and it’s quite chewy, I also read that’s to do with the stress of the way they are slaughtered, so I research before I eat if they use that, I don’t eat there.

Mademetoxic · 29/09/2025 16:58

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2025 16:55

There should be a choice. It is wrong to just assume people will eat halal meat. Imagine the outrage if school meals for example were not halal and Muslim children were 'forced' to eat non halal meat Why is this any different.
