In the queue for the post office and a woman in front of me (take note we very squished up together) opened up her banking app. and my heart sank, she had 4 accounts...800ish, 2kish, 1kish and 10kish. I have one account with 178quid til pay day at the end of the month, and i need to buy food and pay a bill. I know i was unreasonable for looking, I looked away as soon as I could, but my heart died a little. I'll never have that kind of money. Such a different world we live in...

If you get a well paid job or start a successful business you might well earn enough to save that much money

MidnightPatrol · 10/09/2025 11:20

These are very achievable amounts of savings for you to have as a goal OP, even if not right now.

Why not set yourself a target, and put away a pound a week or something, whatever you can afford.

What a helpful response….

I hear you OP.

PennySweeet · 10/09/2025 11:23

You looked away as soon as you could after checking all 4 of her bank balances?

🤣🤣🤣

PollyBell · 10/09/2025 11:23

This cant be a surprise, people earn all sorts and have different savings

ComfortFoodCafe · 10/09/2025 11:23

Start saving really tiny amounts, 50p here and there and you will end up addicted to saving.

BashfulClam · 10/09/2025 11:24

Yep it’s how life is now. I used to be able to save a good chunk each month £500ish, now I’m lucky if I can put away £50.of not makes you feel better I have £112 till payday.

ClaredeBear · 10/09/2025 11:24

It’s tough when there’s nothing left to cushion the blows. Situations can and do change though. Do you foresee any changes on the horizon?

Nellietheelephont · 10/09/2025 11:24

Do you mean £800? Those aren’t insane amounts of savings to be honest although I appreciate can seem unachievable. So YABU really.

musicalfrog · 10/09/2025 11:25

The £10k one is probably the savings she's made for a child over many years. Accounts are connected. My kids are better off than me most of the time.

LlynTegid · 10/09/2025 11:26

Perhaps try to look at it in a positive way. See if there is anything you spend money on that is not really necessary.

tomorrowchild · 10/09/2025 11:26

If I open up my banking app you can see 4 different accounts. One says £355 but that’s a credit card account with my balance displayed so maybe one of hers was the amount she owes to the credit card if that makes you feel any better?

800ish in just one of 4 accounts , the others had a lot more! I have less than that a week after payday!

You must have astonishing eyesight if you were able to see what she had in each of her accounts on her phone screen.

A credit card balance would have a minus in front of it…

Tessasanderson · 10/09/2025 11:28

If you think thats painful. How about spending pretty much your entire adult life (i am 50 now) having your parents, mostly Father showing you his bank account balances whenever you spoke. They lived 250 miles away for most of my life and made little effort with my family such as birthdays for GC. Every time i would go and visit (there were times i was struggling) he would say how well they were doing.

He died with £125k i his current account (there were many other accounts) with his GC refusing to go and visit him whilst he withered away on his deathbed.

Money doesnt always equal happy.

I don’t think that’s loads? My son saw a teachers bank acc at school not even sure how but he said it was on the background of the computer and it had 200k in 🥲

Mine doesn’t. It just says Lloyds Mastercard £355

Pleasealexa · 10/09/2025 11:31

Op, how old are you? I don't think those amounts are unreasonable or more importantly unachievable.

What do you earn yearly? Your age and life stage makes a massive difference.

It’s enough to have in current accounts to be fair.

I have an account with quite a lot of cash in because my mum and dad left it to me when they died. I’d rather have my mum
and dad back than a healthy bank balance, of course I’m grateful for the money but it doesn’t make me happy to see it sitting there, it honestly just reminds me that they are dead.

I hope your fortunes change but for the right reasons, not sad ones, OP

Now that's a lot

I wouldn't consider 800 a lot.

You don't know how long she's saved for the other accounts.

But I agree with you that it would be a struggle to get to the end of the month if I had less than £200 in my account on only the 10th of the month. Petrol is at least £100 a month.

I can only assume you have very low outgoings???? Professional fees, car fees. All this means I need to have over £800 in my account a week after pay day otherwise I wouldn't be able to get to the end of the month.

SpencerGarciaGideon · 10/09/2025 11:38

That's crazy money in my eyes. I'm with you OP! I could only dream of that much in my account.
