In the queue for the post office and a woman in front of me (take note we very squished up together) opened up her banking app. and my heart sank, she had 4 accounts...800ish, 2kish, 1kish and 10kish. I have one account with 178quid til pay day at the end of the month, and i need to buy food and pay a bill. I know i was unreasonable for looking, I looked away as soon as I could, but my heart died a little. I'll never have that kind of money. Such a different world we live in...

You looked away as soon as you could after checking all 4 of her bank balances?

🤣🤣🤣

🤭

Galdownunder · 10/09/2025 12:36

I thought no.1 account had 800k. That's a bit. 800 dollars isn't much at all cmon don't be silly.

MidnightPatrol · 10/09/2025 12:37

MonsterBoo · 10/09/2025 11:30

I don’t think that’s loads? My son saw a teachers bank acc at school not even sure how but he said it was on the background of the computer and it had 200k in 🥲

Could it have been showing her outstanding mortgage balance.

Mine shows in my app and look an account balance. Sadly actually money owed..!

MadinMarch · 10/09/2025 12:37

Finteq · 10/09/2025 11:38

Now that's a lot

I wouldn't consider 800 a lot.

You don't know how long she's saved for the other accounts.

But I agree with you that it would be a struggle to get to the end of the month if I had less than £200 in my account on only the 10th of the month. Petrol is at least £100 a month.

I can only assume you have very low outgoings???? Professional fees, car fees. All this means I need to have over £800 in my account a week after pay day otherwise I wouldn't be able to get to the end of the month.

@Finteq
Just for the record, the £800 was one of four accounts. OP says the other accounts had about 1K, 2K and 10K, so just less than 15K in total.
Not an extraordinary amount really, but I fully appreciate that it's a fortune to some people.

DiscoBob · 10/09/2025 12:38

I still can't believe you snooped on the contents of four bank accounts belonging to a complete stranger? Why would anyone do that?

OriginalUsername2 · 10/09/2025 12:38

HangryLikeTheHulk · 10/09/2025 11:19

If you get a well paid job or start a successful business you might well earn enough to save that much money

“If you just pull your socks up…”

Simplestars · 10/09/2025 11:52

I will make sure I keep my phone covered up to stop nosey people.

Yes, honestly. That's beyond nosy.

It's a lot of money, although not crazy. 10k is a good amount for an emergency fund. No one knows how long it might have taken her to save it.

Notagain75 · 10/09/2025 12:39

PunnyOliveTurtle · 10/09/2025 11:27

800ish in just one of 4 accounts , the others had a lot more! I have less than that a week after payday!

Don't compare yourself to other people, you have no idea what her circumstances are. She may be in a different stage of life from you . I used to live from week to week, and had to use credit cards that were never paid off in full for birthday gifts etc. Now I'm much better off and I have savings, but it took years.

Notmyreality · 10/09/2025 12:39

Loveduppenguin · 10/09/2025 11:28

A credit card balance would have a minus in front of it…

Nope. Yours might. Mine doesn’t.

Notmyreality · 10/09/2025 12:40

MasterBeth · 10/09/2025 11:42

You have no way of knowing that at all.

Why would you say that?

It could be anything!

Indeed.

Exactly.
Or what challenges this individual is going through life.

It is just not a nice thing to do and then post on mumsnet expecting sympathy for her woes.

Jellycatspyjamas · 10/09/2025 12:42

There’s literally no point in comparing what you think others have with what you have. We all make different choices, have different opportunities open to us at any given time. Of course you’re not going to have substantial savings on a low wage, and there will be reasons for you earning £18k which may or may not change over time. I’d hate to think someone over looked me in a queue and made assumptions about my life choices.

Loveduppenguin · 10/09/2025 11:28

Mine doesn't - the only time it has a minus sign is if it accidentally has a positive balance (eg a refund to it)

JacknDiane · 10/09/2025 12:43

Yep it's soul destroying

I mean thats quite a slow look away 😂

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 10/09/2025 12:44

tomorrowchild · 10/09/2025 11:30

Mine doesn’t. It just says Lloyds Mastercard £355

Ditto (though obviously not Lloyd's Mastercard with that particular balance)

LEWWW · 10/09/2025 12:49

I think most people don’t have a ton of money in the bank to be honest, especially at the moment. Don’t compare yourself to anyone, you don’t know what goes on in their lives.

BellyPork · 10/09/2025 12:49

Onthebusses · 10/09/2025 12:02

No. It's an exhausting way to live. If I ever do find myself focusing on what others have, which is completely irrelevant to my life, I would immediately refocus to my goals. I have savings I put into regularly that I cannot touch. I have 2K. This is the most money I have ever had.

My payday is in 2 weeks and I have £20 to feed myself in that time. I'm exclusively breastfeeding a baby and I'm consistently under calories. I've given up trying to eat "enough" but I feel fine.

I'm working on some endeavours to change my income level before my baby is old enough to eradicate my benefits. Plus I'm saving basically one entire child element of UC to elevate my position, for my children, not for me.

My children don't know we're poor and enjoy a good living standard.

I'm intrinsically happy becuase I choose to be. I have friends who are well off and I am so proud and pleased for them.

I admire your positive attitude and understand why you don't want to touch your savings but please for the love of god do not jeopardise your health like this. You're making yourself vulnerable to serious illness by not eating enough. What would happen to your children then?

Food banks exist for exactly this reason, please look into getting a referral.

Bumblebee72 · 10/09/2025 12:32

It's hardly a lot. It is recommended to have 6 months salary in savings.

It may be ‘recommended’ but it’s not actually realistic for a vast percentage of the population.

Overthebow · 10/09/2025 12:50

PunnyOliveTurtle · 10/09/2025 11:34

early 40's, 18k...no its not achievable for me at all right now

You earn less than a full time minimum wage salary. You have no idea of her circumstances, maybe she works full time, maybe she has 2 jobs, maybe she’s worked very hard at uni then a professional job, maybe she was born into money. Who knows, but it’s no point comparing. Only you can change your circumstances so maybe focus on that. What can you do if you want more money, retrain, go full time, get a second job, change career.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/09/2025 12:50

YABVU you shouldn't be looking and surely you realise people have more money that you? I recommend you're never nosey over my shoulder if I've got my banking app open or we'd probably need to pick you up off the floor!

DysonLover1 · 10/09/2025 12:50

People should not be viewing online banking apps in public spaces where they could be overlooked!
OP would have probably faint if I opened mine in public!
Keep stuff private you don’t know who’s looking!

HangryLikeTheHulk · 10/09/2025 11:19

If only it was that easy, we’d all be loaded !

Gettingbysomehow · 10/09/2025 12:52

Ds and his partner managed to save up 20k for a house deposit doing very ordinary retail and council jobs part time. They just scrimped on absolutely everything, clothes from charity shop, compared supermarket food prices and so on.
Now they own a house in their 40's.

PumpkinSeasonOctober · 10/09/2025 12:54

Those aren’t large sums of money. £1k and £2k can be swallowed up on a car bill or similar.
