Rip the flags down! A call for action!

Ilovemychocolate · 25/08/2025 18:46

The sudden appearance of the English flag hung on lamp posts, railings etc has absolutely sickened me, and my dd.
I am proud to be British, but the misappropriation of the flag by thugs, intending to intimidate, is absolutely not acceptable in a diverse society.
So tonight myself and my adult dd ripped them down in our area, and tomorrow we will be going on a flag hunt, to rip down any more we find.
I would strongly urge those of you that feel the same way, to also remove them, as long as you feel safe and comfortable to do it.

Ah, so now you will do the “us” and “them”.
I would suggest you are the one obsessed with race and whilst trying to be the offended victim you are projecting your racist stereotypical views.

Newsflash: It is possible to be racist to white people.

Edited

I’m not a victim, in any way whatsoever.
I am a white British middle class female, with all the privileges that brings.
But I AM disgusted that the flag is now being used to intimidate anyone who isn’t.

So you are the person, a hidden figure on MN who knows the “true” meaning of a flag that has been around since 1190.

Incredible.

I suggest you check out all the media reports on why the flag is now being hung everywhere.
Self education is a wonderful thing.

You might want to start yourself wi the Troubles.

I fucking hate racist flag shaggers. But by ripping them down, you're just reinforcing their belief that it's illegal to fly the flag. Best to either ignore, or write 'stop hate' on each flag.

Who do you think you are touching and damaging someone else's property

How is it someone else's property if it's been put on a lamppost?

What do you think taking flags down is really going to achieve, though?

Is it going to stop the anti-immigration sentiment that is continuing to grow, due to successive governments' total failure to do anything about illegal migration? That we'll suddenly live in a society of peace, love and unity where we all link arms and sing Kumbaya as we skip down the street?

Of course it won't. It will only encourage people to put the flags up in greater numbers. Ignore it, stop making a big deal out of it, and this will have disappeared by Christmas.

Scrambled begs on toast.

Second hand embarrassment, another bell end who only perpetuates the rhetoric of flying your nations flag as being offensive or racist.

Nation's worldwide fly theirs with pride get we're made to feel ashamed for flying ours.

What a weapon you are OP. Whilst you're 'cleaning up' maybe give your bin a clean too.

You are aware of the movement behind this yeah? Or are you a) off social media b) thick c) pretending to be innocent

Ilovemychocolate · 25/08/2025 20:56

Ballykeelover · 25/08/2025 20:47

@Ilovemychocolate can’t you look at what has happened in Northern Ireland and realise that ripping down the flags only gives it energy and makes the sort of people who want to put them up more likely to do it

Maybe.
But I went into my local shop to borrow some scissors to remove them.
The shopkeeper was Asian, and when I explained what I needed the scissors for, she was quietly grateful.
Thats enough for me.
I abhor racism, and I abhor the way Nigel Farage and all his acolytes are trying to take this county to.

Quietly grateful eh? No round of applause from everyone in the shop?

Ballykeelover · 25/08/2025 20:57

You’re only making it worse and stroking the fires of whatever racism they have to hang them on in the first place.

flags and pissing contests about them never end well.

better to ignore.

I am just doing my (albeit tiny) effort to stop it.

Do you honestly think pulling down a fleg or two is going to make a whit of difference?

all you’ll do is make them that hang them feel even more justified

Of course. What I’m saying is that the flags the OP is referring to ar3 being put up to intimidate.

Are they though? That's your interpretation, but other opinions vary. A country's home flag being displayed in that very same country is not unreasonable. Some may not like it, for their own reasons, but best to take no notice rather than kick up a stink and appear xenophobic against the country in which they are resident. 🤔

Just to clarify…I am not looking for validation from complete strangers on the internet.
It was my dd, who is 20, that was insistent we take them down.
I am very proud to be British, but I refuse to let our flag to be used as a method to intimidate people.
SURELY you must all realise there is a concerted effort to try and do this, using our flag?

If you're not looking for validation why did you post what you did on the internet?

Nothing, because I've got more important things to worry about than our national flag being flown.

Do you or your daughter not have jobs to go to tomorrow?

Hahaha, magnificent work OP. Amazing to a throwback like this in 2025, and succeeding in kicking off a mass wind-up. Hats off to you.

BlueJuniper94 · 25/08/2025 21:05

I felt like this about all the rainbow flags. I felt they were incredibly hostile to me and my daughter and women and my lesbian friends. I feel very threatened when I see them. But I leave them be.

Of course you did. Most mumsnetters 'shake and cry' when their doorbells ring unexpectedly. The photo means nothing. You could have had a left over flag from a sporting tournament.

It is Covid all over again! Utter hysteria. In real-life nobody gives a shiny shite!

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/08/2025 21:09

I quite like seeing them tbh.

How is not wanting flags all over lampposts xenophobic?

I am not looking for validation.
Im not seeking it, I couldn’t care less if people give it.
Im asking for people , if they also see the flag where it wouldn’t normally be, to remove it.
Only if they are safe to do so.
Once again, this is a concerted effort by far right groups to make people not originally from this county to feel unwelcome.
Is this really what we as a country want?
