Rip the flags down! A call for action!

The sudden appearance of the English flag hung on lamp posts, railings etc has absolutely sickened me, and my dd.
I am proud to be British, but the misappropriation of the flag by thugs, intending to intimidate, is absolutely not acceptable in a diverse society.
So tonight myself and my adult dd ripped them down in our area, and tomorrow we will be going on a flag hunt, to rip down any more we find.
I would strongly urge those of you that feel the same way, to also remove them, as long as you feel safe and comfortable to do it.
Posting in AIBU for traffic.

Sickened by our national flag? Please get a grip. Are there any other flags which provoke such an OTT reaction?

PLEASE read the thread!
I am not sickened by our national flag.
I am sickened by the misappropriation of it!

Just to clarify…I am not looking for validation from complete strangers on the internet.
It was my dd, who is 20, that was insistent we take them down.
I am very proud to be British, but I refuse to let our flag to be used as a method to intimidate people.
SURELY you must all realise there is a concerted effort to try and do this, using our flag?

Cant you see that you are perpetuating the hate for ''our'' flag by ripping it down?

If you were ripping down hateful slogans id cheer you on. Your ripping down your own countries flag. Why not fly o e yourself and encourage every single non racist person you know to do the same and reclaim the flag for 'normal' use by 'normal' people?

If everyone is flying it it's no longer the fat right's flag any more is it?

Reanimated · 25/08/2025 20:37

How can you tell good flag from a bad flag, op?

Sundaymorningcalla · 25/08/2025 20:39

Scrambled begs on toast.

Second hand embarrassment, another bell end who only perpetuates the rhetoric of flying your nations flag as being offensive or racist.

Nation's worldwide fly theirs with pride get we're made to feel ashamed for flying ours.

What a weapon you are OP. Whilst you're 'cleaning up' maybe give your bin a clean too.

Sskka · 25/08/2025 20:39

@Ilovemychocolate ”I refuse to let our flag to be used as a method to intimidate people“

How about other flags? Do you feel the same way about them? Or would you say that when it’s other flags, they don’t intimidate people?

Then start (or join in) with un-misappropriating it. You tearing it down and them putting back up is getting us no where .

Lets fix it by using it the right way by all the people.

Everyone doesn't have to fly the flag, or even like the flag, for it still be ok for those who do want to fly it to do so.
I wish we would be as tolerant of the English flag as we are of the Scottish or Welsh flags.

Anyone can fly it on their own property. Tying it to lampposts and graffiti-ing it everywhere, on the other hand…

wuminzo · 25/08/2025 20:39

Just out of interest, can anyone just stick a flag or a poster or whatever on telegraph poles or other public property willy nilly?

I am coming to the belief that flags could be displayed at your own property, but not anyone else's including that of the general public.

Ilovemychocolate · 25/08/2025 19:10

Have you not seen or heard anything about the recent proliferation of the flag being hung by right wing thugs to denote that “this country is ours” and protest against immigration?
Can you not see the way this is going?

Ah, so now you will do the “us” and “them”.
I would suggest you are the one obsessed with race and whilst trying to be the offended victim you are projecting your racist stereotypical views.

Newsflash: It is possible to be racist to white people.

Tell her to get a grip. There are far more serious problems in the world today than our national flag being flown, and I suggest your reaction to this is entirely disproportionate and unhealthy.

@Ilovemychocolate ... has made people of colour feel ...

You do know that there are "people of colour" who are English and who are proud of their nation's flag?

Being proud of the flag and using it to intimidate are two contradictory positions.

Not only are you assuming you know the motive of everyone who has hung a flag you are also giving power to those who may have misappropriated it, you can stop giving them oxygen anytime you like.

ladyofshertonabbas · 25/08/2025 20:42

Removing people’s property? You sound nice.

Sundaymorningcalla · 25/08/2025 20:43

Is your daughter at university? If so I can understand why she feels this way, they are vehicles for brainwashing the next generations into this woke tripe.

Ablondiebutagoody · 25/08/2025 20:43

Why are you ripping down your own country's flag and chucking it in a bin? Very bizarre behaviour

With respect, that doesn’t actually solve what is happening right now.
There is a concerted move to display the flag in order to “claim back our country”.
This is being orchestrated to cause dissent and create division.
All I’m asking is if people see these flags in public places, where they wouldn’t normally be placed, that they remove them.
With, obviously, their safely at the forefront of their minds.

Fly it on your own property - absolutely fine.
Litter the place with it intending to intimidate - not fine.

Yes she is at university.
I’m not, I’m 57 years old and agree with her wholeheartedly.

So you are the person, a hidden figure on MN who knows the “true” meaning of a flag that has been around since 1190.

Incredible.

Ballykeelover · 25/08/2025 20:47

@Ilovemychocolate can’t you look at what has happened in Northern Ireland and realise that ripping down the flags only gives it energy and makes the sort of people who want to put them up more likely to do it

Eh?! Please tell me where I said anything about intimidation? I was simply replying to somebody else's comment about "people of colour" and pointing out that lots of "people of colour" are English and are proud of their nation's flag.

ladyofshertonabbas · 25/08/2025 20:42

Don’t be silly.

Whatever you think of the flags and of what OP did, obviously if someone ties a flag to a lamppost and leaves it there, they can’t complain if someone else takes it down. They’ve left it! It’s not a dog tied to a post. It’s a cheap flag abandoned in public.

wuminzo · 25/08/2025 20:49

They should be banned from public property unless flying on a public building or for a National special occasion/celebration. Otherwise no and they should be removed by whoever is responsible, probably local councils. On your own property, no problem at all.

Of course. What I’m saying is that the flags the OP is referring to ar3 being put up to intimidate.
