Rip the flags down! A call for action!

The sudden appearance of the English flag hung on lamp posts, railings etc has absolutely sickened me, and my dd.
I am proud to be British, but the misappropriation of the flag by thugs, intending to intimidate, is absolutely not acceptable in a diverse society.
So tonight myself and my adult dd ripped them down in our area, and tomorrow we will be going on a flag hunt, to rip down any more we find.
I would strongly urge those of you that feel the same way, to also remove them, as long as you feel safe and comfortable to do it.
Posting in AIBU for traffic.

No, we wanted a picture of you, silly! How is anyone to know what a good person you are if you do it all anonymously?!

You asking somebody to dox themselves? Bright idea in this climate. Not.

Of course you did. Most mumsnetters 'shake and cry' when their doorbells ring unexpectedly. The photo means nothing. You could have had a left over flag from a sporting tournament.

It is Covid all over again! Utter hysteria. In real-life nobody gives a shiny shite!

I do. I think they're intimidating. The response on this forum says it all as far as I'm concerned. I don't think they've anything to do with patriotism.

Well done on your complete ignorance of what is actually happening.
And I always answer my door.

Maybe.
But I went into my local shop to borrow some scissors to remove them.
The shopkeeper was Asian, and when I explained what I needed the scissors for, she was quietly grateful.
Thats enough for me.
I abhor racism, and I abhor the way Nigel Farage and all his acolytes are trying to take this county to.

Quietly grateful my arse. I have a second job in a mail processing plant which employs zero-hour contract workers in addition to their permanent staff. We have 500 years of history in this country. There are flags hanging from the ceiling. The zero-hour contract staff are 99% Asian - they do not give a shite. All they are interested in is getting shifts! Conversations revolve around how many shifts they have upcoming. That is the real world!

How is not wanting flags all over lampposts xenophobic?

It could appear xenophobic against a country to strongly object to their flag being displayed, and to rip them down. Simply that.

FreezeDriedStrawberries · 25/08/2025 21:17

Ilovemychocolate · 25/08/2025 20:34

PLEASE read the thread!
I am not sickened by our national flag.
I am sickened by the misappropriation of it!

People are wilfully being ignorant now. They've got to be. Nobody is this stupid.
One poster even said on one of the other countless flag threads when somebody posted about Raising The Colours and an article about it that that weren't reading it and didn't care.
People are either racist or happy to put their fingers in their ears as they don't want to burst their comfy little bubble at this point.

What makes you think it’s fictitious? I posted earlier today on a different thread - if I see any on my street they’re coming down.

Highly unlikely they’ll appear though - probably more support for Jeremy Corbyn than Reform where I live.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 25/08/2025 21:18

I sort of think that the opposite would work better.

Everyone everywhere put up British flags, and English/Scottish/Irish/Welsh.

Flag people happy. But the effect neutralised as a protest because everyone joined in.

(I live in an adjacent neighbourhood where people take the flags down and I think that it's creating an us and them situation which doesn't really help)

There is a difference between displaying a flag, and it being hoisted on 37 lampposts, 12 roundabouts and 5 bridges in specific areas (those numbers are fictional; I haven’t counted).

The point is that certain areas are covered in them. We get it, they like England and its flag, but it’s messy overkill if nothing else.

That won’t work. Look at Northern Ireland.

Being proud of the flag and using it to intimidate are two contradictory positions.

👏👏

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/08/2025 21:20

Personally I wonder if a lot of this is down to Birmingham council removing them, as in "How dare they tell us what to do with our own flag - we'll show 'em!!", rather than a sudden explosion in racism

They'll have riled the extreme left too, who have just had the "they don't do things like that and it's all an urban myth" rug pulled from under them

Mainly, though, I'm amused by the thought of all the angst-ridden committee meetings, rammed with folk who are just there to virtue signal while they all argue about the solution to something that'll die down soon enough

The most intellectual people, typically are not university educated.

I’m not sure I agree. There’s an argument around intelligence, but intellectualism? In any case being anti university is a sign of being anti intellectual.

Muffsies · 25/08/2025 21:22

Just leave them, people will get bored of it when the weather turns wet/cold.

Ah a Islington luvvie.

FirstNationsEnglish · 25/08/2025 21:28

@SleeplessInWherever ... but it’s messy overkill if nothing else. ...

With that I don't necessarily disagree, but as @TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis said, and I agree, to take the flags down creates an us and them situation which doesn't really help.

Tbh, I've been in Wales recently and saw the Welsh flag proudly being displayed everywhere. In my living memory, the Welsh used to burn down houses owned by the English in Wales, but that is in history and I did not feel intimidated seeing their national flag being flown. As we crossed the border back to England I've quite enjoyed seeing the English flag being displayed so readily. It made me feel happy to be home.

You're implying one has to go to university to be intellectual.

The definition of intellectual is:

connected with or using a person's ability to think logically and understand things

I'm not anti-university, but I'm anti-agenda which is what a lot of them now push. They're churning out a generation of young people with little life experience, with ultra liberal views. Whether you believe that to be a good thing or not is a matter of opinion, one that clearly is not shared by us.

University is useful for those wanting to study a meaningful degree, engineering, medicine, etc etc.

I oppose however those who attend to study a meaningless degree who then go on to dye their hair green, not practice good personal hygiene, work part time at a supermarket in a role that bears no relevance to their degree and shove their left leaning views down anyone's throat who will give them 30 seconds of their time.

The forever offended clique who will jump on anything to try and pedal their own narrative.

You shouldn't judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, some of the most successful people are not university educated.

Well let’s hope it really does die soon enough, but are you really so sure with all the rhetoric against the “boat” people that is being bandied about now?
I think the country is heading in a seriously difficult situation right now, and I’m honestly worried about it.
Farage is stoking up the fire, and so many people are falling for it.
Division of the masses, always the dictator’s favourite method.

Lockdown now! National curfew so those oiks cannot go out under the cover of darkness and put up more flags.

Time to lockdown and order your supermarket deliveries. No doubt facilitated by the working classes as per Covid! Time to get back on your Peloton machines and bake banana bread. Full WFH in case you spot a flag on your way to the office!

We should have a Thursday night clap for those who take down the flags! Clap for Kate at number 33. She took down 12 flags last night!

Good to see equal opportunity intolerance being practised 🙄

As you were, just refilled my popcorn, and marvelling at how regressive society appears to be becoming.
