Why does everyone say they love being fat until they get their hands on skinny jabs?

I’m seeing this so much on social media. People screaming from the rooftops how they love their bodies. Hate comments come and they combat them with body positivity, I admired them so much.

Lately though, the very people who were oh-so-body-positive are popping back up five stone lighter. Some comment on it and some don’t, as if they’re waiting for people to ask. Hang on a minute, I thought you loved your big body? Did you love being fat or not?

They were being positive despite being fat, not because they loved being fat.
What should they have done?
Put a gun in their mouth?
Locked themselves away in a darken room away from decent thin folks?
Publicly flay themselves for being fat?

And low and behold along comes an almost miraculous tool which can help them be heathier, change their lives immeasurably for the better and become socially acceptable to thin people......

And you are amazed that they use that tool. Seriously?

I don’t make a point of doling out medical advice because I feel there are far more qualified people out there to do so. I would say that diabetics probably have more reason to take these medications than someone who is just choosing to. But again, it’s a choice.

I have some crappy health conditions. When choosing my treatment for these conditions, I sat with my consultant and discussed the long-term effect of them alongside the long-term effects of not taking them. None of them had no side effects, and choosing to not take any of them would have resulted in paralysis probably followed by death. So I accepted the fairly crappy side effects.

From that perspective, I can definitely sympathise with someone who would abstain from a medication that they don’t necessarily need due to the side-effects of it.

Obesity and its related morbidities lead to almost certain death. So its hardly a lifestyle choice.

A lot of people conflate being able to look good/ want to look good when you are larger with loving bring larger. I'm not sure that is what many people actually say/ feel. I got big with health issues and kids. I never said I liked my size, but that did not mean I didn't want to make the best of what I had. Over the last 2 years I have been working to lose the weight - I feel and look much better. Honestly the feeling better is the biggest thing. Would someone look back at a nice picture I took at 12.5 stone and say now I'm back to just over 9 stone I'm turning my back on a movement I was never part of?

A lot of this narrative seems yet another way to police how women look and feel about themselves.

GLP-1s have liberated me from the flesh prison I never pretended to love.

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 10/07/2026 08:16

Do you think fat people should walk around feeling shit about themselves for daring to exist op?

It seems to bother people that fat people had the same will power and information as them all along, they just genuinely did have it easier as their GLP-1 wasn't outta whack!

This is so true!

Yup

Life leads to death. We are all going to die eventually. There are people of all shapes and sizes in nursing homes.

I was chatting to my SIL who manages a nursing home about that just the other week @CherryAlmondLattice . She said larger clients tend to come into their care much younger due to earlier declining physical health/mobility and managing care with dignity can be difficult when needing hoists to lift in/out of bed/onto toilets etc, regular toilet accidents while waiting for staff/hoist. She is a larger woman herself (she has been advised not to take WLI due to heart issues she is waiting on referrals for) and says to shoot her before she ends up in a nursery home!

Side effects from any medication is a risk that needs carefully weighed up with the consequences of doing nothing for health and quality of life now and in the future.

I am far from morbidly obese but I am definitely larger than I should be, I do not love being fat, I hate it, I would much rather be slimmer, fitter and healthier....

But I also love shit food, I love crisps, I love full fat milk especially milkshakes, I love melted cheese... I accept that this is a trade off and that I will be slightly larger than I would like in exchange for getting to enjoy the things I want to eat. I have a cut off weight that if I hit I will go on a health kick drop a chunk of weight and spend the next few years slowly creeping back up again.

Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting that we should be ignorant to the effects of obesity!

It's more that the PP said that obese people will die... but so will everyone else. I would probably qualify for GLP-1s, but I wouldn't take them because I don't want the side effects (short- or potentially long-term). I also hope not to end up in a nursing home - a massive aneurysm in my sleep will do, thanks!

I have to visit nursing homes regularly. I often see 40 or 50 stone people of 40 plus years old stuck in there because there is literally nowhere else for them to go.
What a great life that must be. Stuck in a home at 40 until they die surrounded by dementia residents.

You often see 50 stone people? Often? That's an incredibly rare weight to reach. I'm working on a weight loss TV series and 50 stone, or 700 pounds, is considered such an outlier that it means that person would automatically be signed up.
