To be so fed up amd disheartened with all the xenophobia

Nohqters · 04/08/2025 21:56

Honestly, I’m just feeling worn out and heartbroken lately. It seems like racism and xenophobia are becoming more and more mainstream again, wrapped up in the same tired scare stories, whether it’s splashed across a tabloid or coming straight out of Farage’s mouth. Then you see stupid threads on here about civil war trying to stir up more hate.

Even my own brother has started sounding like Tommy Robinson. Ten years ago, that would’ve been unthinkable. It’s like people have completely forgotten the lies we were sold during Brexit—by Farage, Tice and their crowd—and yet they’re still lapping up everything they say. No critical thought, just blind anger pointed in the wrong direction.
I’m so fed up with the endless nonsense about small boats, “white minorities,” and all the rest of it. It’s all designed to divide us, stoke hate, and distract from the real culprits—rubbish politicians, broken policies, and the ultra-wealthy hoarding resources while the rest of us struggle.

But instead of looking upwards, it’s always “blame Johnny Foreigner.” It’s exhausting, and frankly terrifying how quickly people fall for it.

Is anyone else feeling this? How are you managing conversations when even close family seem to be buying into this stuff? I’m trying to stay compassionate, but it’s getting harder to bite my tongue.

So white skin turning pink isn't racist?

How would it be racist

That isn’t what it means. Sorry to disappoint you.

Gammon is a racist term, so yes, you carry on advocating its use.

Who used the word “gammon”?

MyNameIsX · 05/08/2025 09:39

BIossomtoes · 05/08/2025 09:36

Gammon is most definitely not racist. It’s sexist for sure.

Gammon is a pejorative term popularised in British political culture since the 2010s. The term refers to the colour of a white person's flushed face, which purportedly resembles the type of pork of the same name

Dangermoo · 05/08/2025 09:39

Inchworms · 05/08/2025 09:38

Here we go with the denial. Can you explain the use of gammon, in its context, when denigrating white men.

MyNameIsX · 05/08/2025 09:29

As I say, diluted.

Were you asleep when the psychodrama was unfolding?

So you admit that changes to welfare have been passed? That doesn't quite tally with your former assertion.

MyNameIsX · 05/08/2025 09:40

Teanbiscuits33 · 05/08/2025 09:38

Oh, no! However will I cope when a comment on MN gets removed? 😱🤯

You will not tell posters to ‘piss off’ too frequently, that’s for certain.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/08/2025 09:41

For gammon to be racist they would have to be born that way, It is not a racist word.

Racism applies to the colour you were born into.

Gammons develop that colour through being horrible.

They would have a fit, if they knew Femi, a well known black political activist, agreed it was racist.

I have lived and worked for a decade in schools, in areas which would make Nige's head explode. Majority non-white, signs in different languages everywhere, and in lots of schools majority Muslim.

You know what? We all get along fine. There has always been a great sense of community. The parents accept me for who I am - very white, very punky looking - and I them. I get Christmas presents and sweets/dates on Eid, and I give them back. We have had brilliant events for the community where people bring in food from their community.

I don't object in principle to changing immigration rules or trying to lower it with sensible measures - go ahead! But I object to the growing nasty rhetoric. I object to tarring every migrant with the same brush based on the actions of a few. I object to us forgetting the massive benefits we have reaped from migration, and the ability to migrate ourselves.

I reckon migrants should go on strike for a day or two. Perhaps their children so I get a day off!
Let's see how well the country functions!

My parents fought for this country.

They wouldn’t feel like you. They were socialists.

So did mine, what’s your point?

Your parents thought the Soviet Union was a worthy experiment? All the human misery that’s stemmed from socialism wherever it’s been tried?

They wouldn’t worry about a huge number of men breaking illegally into the country before raping children? That’s not even an exaggeration. Do a cursory google search and see how many cases come up in the last year alone. Given asylum seekers make up such a small % of immigration, why do they seem so wildly overrepresented?

Look, I don’t really care. It’s an internet forum, my life won’t end because I told someone to piss off who asked me a stupid bloody question and then it got removed. Christ almighty. I’m not in the habit of it, and even if I was and got banned from the site, again my life won’t end 😂

I don’t know how to break this to you but non white people aren’t automatically immigrants. The majority are British. So not part of what we are discussing.

Someone else put it far better than I can.

Gammon is a racist slur, we are told. Let me put this gently: affluent white men with reactionary opinions are not a race. White people mocking other white people over their skin colour is not racism.

It is a term about political views and how they are expressed.

Reactionary affluent white men are not being harassed by police officers, disproportionately driven into poverty and precarious work, systematically underrepresented in political and public life, or threatened with deportation. “Gammon” is punching up in a way that, say, “chavs” is punching down. That rightwingers are now pushing the use of the word “gammon” as racism is age-old example of how the privileged crave a sense of persecution, that they can target genuinely oppressed minorities while claiming they are the real victims.

I don’t care about being told to piss off.

I care about you wildly dodging any posts that brings up the kidnap, rape and murder of children and women, of which there have been dozens of cases in the last year alone.

I care that you use silly, illogical arguments like ‘but what about white sex offenders’ which means ‘yeah women are raped already so why not add to the risk for the sake of accommodating racial harmony?’

I would not know in this case, because I am not wrong.

No amount of goading from you will change that.

Sorry/not sorry, for not biting.
