To be so fed up amd disheartened with all the xenophobia

Nohqters · 04/08/2025 21:56

Honestly, I’m just feeling worn out and heartbroken lately. It seems like racism and xenophobia are becoming more and more mainstream again, wrapped up in the same tired scare stories, whether it’s splashed across a tabloid or coming straight out of Farage’s mouth. Then you see stupid threads on here about civil war trying to stir up more hate.

Even my own brother has started sounding like Tommy Robinson. Ten years ago, that would’ve been unthinkable. It’s like people have completely forgotten the lies we were sold during Brexit—by Farage, Tice and their crowd—and yet they’re still lapping up everything they say. No critical thought, just blind anger pointed in the wrong direction.
I’m so fed up with the endless nonsense about small boats, “white minorities,” and all the rest of it. It’s all designed to divide us, stoke hate, and distract from the real culprits—rubbish politicians, broken policies, and the ultra-wealthy hoarding resources while the rest of us struggle.

But instead of looking upwards, it’s always “blame Johnny Foreigner.” It’s exhausting, and frankly terrifying how quickly people fall for it.

Is anyone else feeling this? How are you managing conversations when even close family seem to be buying into this stuff? I’m trying to stay compassionate, but it’s getting harder to bite my tongue.

Cambridge Uni used to publish the "bloopers" made by students during exams. Some were really shocking howlers. It was an internal publication that was never seen by the general public. So funny.

Indeed. Talking of Cambridge, Any publications on Labour MPs, not being armed with basic numbers, such as number of police officers being deployed? Anyway, definitely my bedtime.

Sorry, they were separate points. I wasn’t saying that people who voted for Brexit were racist. I was listing the things that have surprised me over the years. Brexit and the rise in racism being 2 things, not one thing combined. Reading it back I can see how it looks as though I conflated the 2.

Fair enough, I am not surprised by either , think it depends where you live , life experiences etc. people shutting others down with name calling doesn’t help. People are concerned and it is causing division and the government do need to tackle this, along with many many things, they need to listen to the voices not just those that shout the loudest. Mp’s need to listen to voters and not label people straight away, maybe they then could address concerns , put them straight on thing they have wrong etc

Same sneering as usual.

Do you really think left wingers are more intelligent than centrist? You are allowing in to the UK millions of right wing, uneducated people. Indian, Pakistani, African, ....all famously tolerant Liberal folk. You seem to have no sense of survival, of reality, of community or economics.

The UK has a voting system and we all have one vote. You educated clever clogs vote the way you want, including scrambling to include 16 year olds ( known for their brilliant minds)...

And the uneducated plebs can vote for whoever they wish. They can wear their union jack dresses and mark an 'x' with difficulty, but they should just about manage.

Enjoy your fabulous lives, and when reality bites, remember; you're the most intelligent.

I'm quite sure it would be in the news if a hotel filled with only women and children was under seige and surrounded by Nazis, has there been any coverage?

Local and some light national

Thankfully they were moved on by police weekly for a few months until they gave up. There were some attempts at violent break in and trespass. They were opposed by hope not hate and sanctuary.

The odd nutter mounts a campaign once in a while against them but overall they are doing really well and integrating nicely with the help of the local community.

matresense · 05/08/2025 00:51

Yes @ToastandbutterandI was aware of this

you can see them here https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/SN04334/SN04334.pdf

The percentage of foreign nationals in the U.K. is around 16%, so less likely to commit a crime justifying prison. But, firstly, this is unsurprising given that a high proportion of foreign nationals come here as selected visa holders for shortage occupations etc - ie there is no differentiation between a doctor and someone who arrives on a boat. And secondly, you can see from the statistics, there are certain nationalities that are more likely to commit crimes than the average Briton too. And obviously this only covers those actually sent to prison.

The government doesn’t actually currently collect good statistics on offending by immigration status by its own admission.

Stats can always be used in a way to defend both sides of an argument in many cases , depending on how you spin it as most are not detailed enough.

Do you? Prove me wrong? It takes a lot to move your family to a different continent in the hope things get better. As a uk citizen I see the racial diversity and improving daily. I love all humans no matter how much melanin in their skin. Sorry to disappoint your media fueled beliefs that we don’t like black/brown peoples. We want fairness, not division

saraclara · 05/08/2025 00:55

It's everywhere on my social media. And today it's everywhere on Mumsnet. Which I really didn't expect.

I'm afraid I haven't read the thread @Nohqters because the other threads today have made me so depressed and I couldn't face more comments like the ones I saw this morning.

My voluntary work is with refugees and asylum seekers. I hear such tragic stories over and over. But today I've just heard them all being tarred with the same brush as the few asylum seekers who are offenders.

During the Rotherham riot and the ones that followed, we were trying to support some of our clients who were in hotels and terrified. They'd done nothing to deserve idiots trying to set their accommodation alight.

When people ask me what I'm doing with my retirement, I don't expect everyone to respect it or to choose it themselves. But over the last few days, on two occasions, the people asking me actively scowled when I told them, and one turned and walked away.

The absolute wave of hate that has gained pace in the last week is really shocking, and I'm actually fearful for our future.

Agreed

Justcoffee · 05/08/2025 00:56

I'm increasingly frustrated with how any concerns about what's happening in this country are quickly dismissed as "racist" or "xenophobic." That’s simply not fair. Most people, including myself, have no issue with legal immigration especially those who go through proper channels, are vetted, and contribute positively to our society, like the NHS, rely heavily on hardworking immigrants.

However the real concern for many of us is the large number of unvetted individuals mostly men arriving in small boats and being housed in hotels with full provisions, including meals, mobile phones, and allowances. All this is happening while many of our own citizens, including veterans who served this country, are sleeping on the streets without adequate help or support. I know this firsthand — and it’s heartbreaking.

We keep hearing that these people are fleeing war, but many pass through multiple safe countries before arriving in the UK. For example, France isn’t a war zone so why bypass it to come here? It feels like we’re being taken advantage of, and raising concerns about this doesn’t make someone a racist — it makes them a citizen who cares about fairness and safety.

And yes, I know crimes like rape and murder are committed by people of all backgrounds — but that’s exactly why we need strong vetting processes. Why bring in more risk when we already struggle to manage what’s here?
I want my children to grow up feeling safe not fearful or intimidated. I’ve had personal experiences that made me feel deeply uncomfortable, and I know I’m not alone.

Also, why is there a double standard when it comes to religious expression? Some groups are free to pray wherever they like, but if a Christian does the same, they can be arrested. That doesn’t feel like equality. It actually just deels like we are appeasing a certain group.

The jailing of people last summer is absolutely sickening for writing posts on social media, serving more time for a post than some of these sickening crimes.

Tell me I'm wrong?

There’s so much going on in this thread I just cannot.

But I am going to state it here. For the first time potentially ever said on the net. That care workers are to the immigration argument what black woman were to the trans argument.

Just dragged in for absolutely no logical reason to the discussion at hand.

I agree and it's hard when close family think differently. These rich narcissistic people who crave power to gain more wealth and control have tapped into something. And understanding that is important.

It really annoys me that the government doesn't try to change the narrative.

So it is more useful for you to make that list of the things you have witnessed, isn't it? But you are reluctant to do so because...?

Not reluctant, I just don't need to. When locale say they are concerned, people should maybe, I dunno, just believe them!?

Instead, what we've got are people being vocal about issues across the country being 'overblown', when they don't know the first thing about living in these communities day to day.

Anyone is more than welcome to spend proper time in these communities if they want to find out 🤷‍♀️

Haha me and my DH were watching Yellow stone on Netflix last night and in a scene at a rodeo they were riding a horse with the American flag flying and every one was singing the american anthem.

Both me and my Dh looked at each other and both said in sync that would not happen here it would be canceled and they would be locked up 😂

Ermm, have you watched any major sporting events recently?

Oh look another liberal left wing break down thread 😭

Get a grip, people no longer are bowing to the woke tidal wave that drowned out common sense and pride years ago.

What is your definition of “woke”?
