I’d say it’s more Medium. Vinted disagrees. AIBU?

I’m size 14 and Vinted sees me as XL - wasn’t a massive confidence boost I must say!

I work in a clothing shop and our sizes are
Extra Small 6-8
Small 10
Medium 12
Large 14
Extra Large 16
XX Large 18

This sort of corresponds to how it is in my brain!

RosesAndHellebores · 01/08/2025 16:11

It depends on the shop. I shop in mostly M&S, Seasalt, JL, Whistles, Baukjen, etc. I am a size 14 or M/L. I’m 5’6”, BMI 26. I could do with losing 8lb to 10lb. I don’t regard myself as large and won’t be buying from Vinted.

RainSoakedNights · 01/08/2025 16:20

The vinted sizes make me laugh. 28 is a 9XL

Squishymallows · 01/08/2025 16:22

I think
6-8 XS
8-10 S
10-12 M
12-14 L
14-16 XL

I am average height (5’5”), a bit under 10st, BMI 23. I feel average/medium. I am a size 12.

I’m the same - curvy hips and 32E boobs make me a 12 but it was always medium until recently. Those saying 12 is the same as a 16 20 years ago are making stuff up - I still fit dresses from 20 years ago and they are a 12, as are the clothes I buy. I don’t buy from primark though so maybe that’s the difference.

PeonyBulb · 01/08/2025 16:30

Sizing has changed quite a bit

so when I was younger and we were all similar sizes but different heights

So I was always a large because I’m 5’ 6 but a size 8 / 10 back in the day about 20 years ago

DD now wears a lot of my old clothes she is 5’ 5 and an XS size 6 and she fits into my old clothes. They’re not quite as fitted as they were on me but they’re not loose either

I am now a size 18 XXL and my old clothes look ridiculously small against me so I have no idea how my body could have been that small but my frame hasn’t changed so it’s a lot of excess weight I’m carrying and I do believe my size 18 clothes are really a 20 / 22

My old size 16 clothes from 10 years are way too small for me so I think cuts of clothes have increased dramatically. Which of course I’m happy with. I like these vanity sizes but it means I’m lazy re weight loss

PeonyBulb · 01/08/2025 16:31

Squishymallows · 01/08/2025 16:22

I think
6-8 XS
8-10 S
10-12 M
12-14 L
14-16 XL

Yes this is definitely correct although compared to 20 years ago the larger sizes have definitely increased in cut imho

RainSoakedNights · 01/08/2025 16:33

Squishymallows · 01/08/2025 16:22

I think
6-8 XS
8-10 S
10-12 M
12-14 L
14-16 XL

Disagree.

6-8 XXS
8-10 XS
10-12 S
12-14 M
14-16 L
16-18 XL

ohsososo · 01/08/2025 16:33

Straightjacketsandroses · 31/07/2025 19:32

I see M as 10 and to me L is 12, so I’ll buy according to how I want whatever the item is to fit. S is 8 I think!

presumably 14 is an XL and 16 XXL

And a 6 is an XS and a 4 XXS

Yes I think I agree

ohsososo · 01/08/2025 16:35

RainSoakedNights · 01/08/2025 16:33

Disagree.

6-8 XXS
8-10 XS
10-12 S
12-14 M
14-16 L
16-18 XL

4-6 XXS
8 XS
10 S
12 M
14 L
16 XL
18 XXL

This seems logical to me

RainSoakedNights · 01/08/2025 16:35

ohsososo · 01/08/2025 16:35

4-6 XXS
8 XS
10 S
12 M
14 L
16 XL
18 XXL

This seems logical to me

16 and 18 are not 'extra large' though - they're the average size

Pinty · 01/08/2025 16:37

I have always thought 12 was medium, 10 small and 8 extra small ,
12 isn't large

Squishymallows · 01/08/2025 16:43

16-18 XL

Nah you’re crazy, a 12 isn’t small

If 18 is average size then it’s because we have an obesity crisis

Pinty · 01/08/2025 16:52

Chronicworrier123 · 31/07/2025 20:04

Here we go again, it depends on height. For shorties like me, yes I would be obese in a size 12

Really?
I am small i wear size 14/16 and I have 1/2 stone to go lose to get in the healthy category but I'm not obese.

ohsososo · 01/08/2025 16:56

TreeCake · 31/07/2025 19:43

I'm 5 foot 2, 9st 10lb and wear 10-12. I don't feel large. But apparently I am!

I’m 5’2 and a bit 😉 and a small 8. I don’t feel particularly tiny. I still have flesh I can grab on places. At a size 12 I would be very chunky

Mistyglade · 01/08/2025 16:56

No way. I’m quite slender at 5’5 and 9st 11. I wear a 12 now because i conceded last year I can’t comfortably fit in my old size 8 and 10 stuff anymore partly because at 47 I want to look smarter and wear clothes that fit better. If that makes me big in some peoples eyes that’s on them. I think I look just fine.

ohsososo · 01/08/2025 16:57

RainSoakedNights · 01/08/2025 16:35

Average is just a measure of numbers of people within a population. It’s not a measure of what is a healthy weight nor a measure of clothes sizes.

if obesity continues and the average becomes a 20-22 are you suggesting then that size would be a Medium?

JohnTheRevelator · 01/08/2025 17:00

To my mind,a size 12 is a medium. I think people's idea of what constitutes a small, medium or large has changed over the past few decades. Back in the early 1980s,a size 10/12 was considered small,an 8 to 10 was very small,a 14/16 was medium and an 18 was large. It was quite difficult to get a size 8 (I remember a girl in my class at college complaining that she found it really difficult to find clothes in a size 8). I think sizes have changed too, what was a size 14 back then would be more like a size 12 nowadays.

Well thanks. I don't feel very chunky. I'm 9 st 10 lbs so I don't think it's massive and it's certainly a healthy BMI. I'm glad you are happy with your size.

I'm a 16-18 and I don't feel like an Xl-XXL!

This. 18 might be the average size but that says more about how xl everyone has become.

I’m a 12, and certainly feel large.

Luckyingame · 01/08/2025 17:08

It depends how tall the person is.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 01/08/2025 17:09

It’s not large. It’s considerably less than average.
