To think size 12 isn’t Large?

I’d say it’s more Medium. Vinted disagrees. AIBU?

Are you also very short? Because I feel like this but it’s absolutely not big on someone of a normal height. I know very athletic, medium height, women that wear a 12 without an ounce of fat.

5 foot 6.

Echobelly · 31/07/2025 19:49

Hard agree, op - I'm sure when I was a kid, 10 was considered small, 12 sort of medium? It's a natural healthy size for a lot of women, and I suppose my worry is framing it that way might make some teens and young women who land at that size feel they must be 'fat' because their clothing size is described as 'large'

AlligatorTears · 31/07/2025 19:51

I think it’s relative. I’m 5’4 and if wearing a size 12 then I’m in the overweight category so yes, I’d say it’s large.

a size 10 is the same as my husbands medium (I can wear his clothes) so sounds right to me.

TakeMeToAnIgloo · 31/07/2025 19:53

It annoys me too, as I have a search set up, and it gives me size 10s and Mediums, but the mediums are too big; in most S/M/L items, I'd go for the small. I think the 12 is likely when I'd buy a Medium, and 14 a large.

It's nothing to do with what people think is or should be medium/large etc, but realistically how the sizes tend to match up between different standards, and i mostly find that size 10 seems to match with small in most shops that do s/m/l

MauraLabingi · 31/07/2025 19:40

I'm a size 12 too OP (waist 29 inches). This means I usually buy size 10 clothes due to vanity sizing. For that reason, I'd say clothing size 12 probably actually fits someone who is a size 14 now, and therefore size 12 clothes are in fact "large".

Whether a person wearing said clothes is 'large' or not is an entirely different question, and depends on height and body composition.

The whole thing is a minefield. Why oh why can't we have everything measured in inches like men do?

Agree! My husband was very bemused the other day when I tried on 4 different pairs of jeans all the same clothes size and only 1 pair fit correctly. It made no sense to him that one was too small, 2 too big and one just right.

iamnotalemon · 31/07/2025 19:54

I’m a size 16. Oh dear 😆

SwedishEdith · 31/07/2025 19:55

Yes, I was confused about this on Vinted. My default size is 12 (5'6" and 63kg) and I go for M if no size 12. I've always seen 12 as almost the very definition of medium on average height women. Oliver Bonas though, bloody hell, I can fit an 8 there!

Konstantine8364 · 31/07/2025 19:56

Im a size 12 and would pretty much always buy a medium in high street clothes. Large would almost always be too big. Sometimes get a small in jumpers. Im probably the smaller end of 12, so I hate it when they do 8-10 12-14 clothes as neither option fits!

Bananachimp · 31/07/2025 19:56

youalright · 31/07/2025 19:35

I think 8 -10 is small 12- 14 medium 16-18 large and 20+ extra large

Yes this is what I'd say

itt · 31/07/2025 19:56

I'd say 10-12 is medium. It varies so much from shop to shop though. Im 5'6" and wouldn't be large at a size 10-12 by anyone's standards.

AllTheChaos · 31/07/2025 19:58

I am wearing a relatives old dress today, from just after the war. It was a size 16 at the time. 34” bust. People are taller, bigger boned and better nutritioned now. Look at old dress patterns to see the difference. These days I am considered small - in addition to being short - but back then I’d have been fairly average height and quite stocky. These days I’m a size 6, and until recently was a size 18 in modern sizes! All of which is to say - ignore the size label!

KitTea3 · 31/07/2025 19:58

It's hard to say

At my slimmest when I was 15 I was in a 8/10. Thought I'm pretty sure even then I was at least 10st. (I sound heavy but my boss were pretty visable-i know that's not abnormal but I wasn't eating at that point so it was quite noticeable but due to never reaching underweight BMI I was never considered to have an ED)

At my heaviest (21st 😳) I was a size 22.

Im now down to about 13st and fit into a size 14 most places or a medium.

Vanity sizing is definitely a thing! But at the same time I feel and look much smaller than I was at a 22.

Id be happy at a size 12 tbh 🤷🏼‍♀️

MidnightMeltdown · 31/07/2025 19:44

I think there’s some overlap in sizing because not all shops size in the same way. I’d say:

6-8 XS
8-10 S
10-12 M
12-14 L
14-16 XL

To me XL is 18-20, L is 16-18, medium is 14-16, small is 10-12

ThatLoudBear · 31/07/2025 20:00

I don't care whether a size 12 is a medium or large, but I'm 5'8" and size 12 at 11.5 stone, which I'd definitely equate with a large, but whatever. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 31/07/2025 20:00

Straightjacketsandroses · 31/07/2025 19:32

I see M as 10 and to me L is 12, so I’ll buy according to how I want whatever the item is to fit. S is 8 I think!

I think of 8 as extra small, 10 as small etc

I’m 13 st 5lb, yet I am size 18-20!

Ooodelally · 31/07/2025 20:01

I’d say 12 is a large because 10 is medium…
that feels like it makes sense to me, no idea where I’ve decided it from

ChrisMartinsKisskam · 31/07/2025 20:02

I’m 5ft 6
hover between 8.10’-813
I’m a large 8 / small 10

BM1 I think is 19

FloraSpoke · 31/07/2025 20:02

Interesting this. When I was 18 and weighed 9.5 stone (height 5’ 7’’) I was always a size 12 for all clothes. A quarter of a century later, I weigh a stone more and am usually a size 10! So I think clothes sizing has definitely got bigger. But equally, at that age I was buying trousers and tops in Miss Selfridge rather than Hobbs, White Stuff or Fatface lol.

I'm a size 6-8 and would always consider it small. I can't count the number of times I've automatically picked up a small then got home and realised it's too big. In my head I'm no way an extra small.

Vastimir · 31/07/2025 20:03

As an average height, average BMI size 12, I feel distinctly medium. Interesting to see so many people disagree and would consider me large!

I personally feel like a contender for ‘My 600Ib Life’, when I’m a 12. To me it’s big.

I can only dream of being a 12. Looking round my area it seems from the sizing on here that nearly all are XL!

Chronicworrier123 · 31/07/2025 20:04

Here we go again, it depends on height. For shorties like me, yes I would be obese in a size 12

justasking111 · 31/07/2025 20:05

Purpleisnotmycolour · 31/07/2025 19:34

It's large as a 12 now is an old 16.

Many decades ago I was a size 10 and always on a diet. I'd be a 6 now.

Does it matter?

Yes if you are buying online and the options are small, medium or large.

What size is large?
