I’d say it’s more Medium. Vinted disagrees. AIBU?

Zara large is definitely a 12, sometimes more like a 10. I sell on Vinted and feel that the S/M/L being 8/10/12 respectively generally reflects the right sizing of my clothes.

Pomegranatecarnage · 31/07/2025 22:15

I wore a size 12 in the late 80’s and still wear a 12- however, I’m 2 and a half stone heavier and my waist is 6 inches wider. My daughter who is an 8 tried on an old skirt of mine which was a 12 and it fit perfectly. Size 12 used to be 26 inches wider waist.

If a size 12 is large, I must be visible from space at a size 16-18. 😆

Purpleisnotmycolour · 31/07/2025 22:18

A vintage size 12 had a 26" waist. I have an item from the 1950s with a label in and can measure it. Also, just look at sewing patterns to see what sizes were.

I don’t believe this. I’m a 8-10 and I struggle to imagine many women were slimmer than I am years ago as I have literally no weight to lose. I’m average height too. Some shops I think vanity size (Next, I’m looking at you) but mostly I find a 10 fairly small as a body type and can’t imagine many women much slimmer than that years ago!

Interesting, I just got some size 12 next jeans today and need to send them back for a smaller size!

Op I also think vinted is mean 😸

Comedycook · 31/07/2025 22:21

But sizes are mad...i have clothes in every size from a 12-18

Gonksmum · 31/07/2025 22:38

At average height - 5'5"-ish-, then 8-10 is small, 12-14 medium and 16-18 is large. XL is 20-22 and XS, 6-8. So,12 is a medium, IMO.

liveforsummer · 31/07/2025 23:25

I’ve always been a size 10 and used to buy size S but in the last couple of years find I need M so I’d assume 12 to be a L these days

DevonDonnie · 31/07/2025 23:40

I’ve always thought size (UK/AUS) 4-6=xxs 6-8=xs 8-10=s 10-12=m 12-14 = large 14-16=-2 xx 16-28 =-12 xxl

DevonDonnie · 31/07/2025 23:42

Sorry, 14-16 x l and 16- 18 xxl

TheGoldFox · 31/07/2025 23:44

When I was a size 12 many years ago! It was labelled as large in clothes I bought so hardly a new thing 12 has always been “large”

DevonDonnie · 31/07/2025 23:58

4-6 is xxs 6-8 is xs 8-10 is s 10-12 is m 12-14 is l 14-16 is xl 16-18 is xx l

Divebar2021 · 01/08/2025 00:10

Sellers on Vinted are a menace with this… they will sell an item as a 12 when it’s labelled as a Large without specifying what size it will actually fit. A large top from COS is likely to fit a 14 and above. Let’s just say I have been lumbered with several tops that have been too big this way. ( I’d say a 10-12 is a medium in general life)

You must be eating a roast chicken over 3 days, not five!

Time to cut down, that massive salad is too massive

😂😂😂

RigIt · 01/08/2025 01:45

I am generally a size 12. If the sizing is small, medium, large then I’m usually a medium. So 12 = medium.

Disturbia81 · 01/08/2025 01:54

No it isn’t, I’m very slim at a size 12. It depends on height and build, but even then I can’t imagine short people being big at a 12 either.

whitewineandsun · 01/08/2025 01:58

Straightjacketsandroses · 31/07/2025 19:32

I see M as 10 and to me L is 12, so I’ll buy according to how I want whatever the item is to fit. S is 8 I think!

Same. And I've gone from 10 to 12 recently. Thank you, menopause!

Cornishclio · 01/08/2025 02:02

I think 10-12 is medium. 14-16 is large and 16-18 is x large 6-8 is small. No idea about Vinteds criteria for size.

Athreedoorwardrobe · 01/08/2025 02:27

Well it completely depends how tall you are..
But as for vinted I guess they have to do it as L otherwise you'd be going down to XXS with size 6 which isn't really the case in the UK. 8 tends to be accepted as S. So guess you'd have to have 12 as L.

Really I think 6-8 is small, 10-12 is medium and 14-16 is L. 18-20 XL.

Apparently 16 is now the average clothing size for a woman in the uk... so I do think it's a bit nuts to have to pretend a 12 is large.

Comedycook · 31/07/2025 22:21

They really are. I'm currently wearing a size 8 top and size 14 trousers. I've got every size in my wardrobe. I've got a dress in there that's apparently a UK size 6 🤣 and I've got things that are size 16.
There's no set standard.
On the high street I find Zara is the worst for it. You really have no idea what size to take into the changing room with you.

Sleepthief · 01/08/2025 02:51

This really annoys me about Vinted! Regardless of how large/small/whatever anyone here feels, a size L in H&M or Uniqlo, for example, is categorically not a UK 12! Vinted’s insistence on linking the sizes like that means having to message the seller to clarify (if they haven’t photographed the label) and/or clicking ‘other’ and listing the size separately if I’m selling my own stuff from those shops - obviously not the end of the world, but an irritation nonetheless 🙄

CurlyKoalie · 01/08/2025 08:58

The average clothes size for women in the UK is 16 (Google it )so surely this should be "medium" size as "medium" by definition is middle or average?
Having smaller sizes classed as "medium" perpetuates an outdated idea that to be "normal" all women should aspire to fit these sizes whatever their build, muscle mass or body shape.
Its interesting watching these posts. Lots of "smaller" people debating how average they thing they think they are with very little appreciation on what the real "average" size is. Are they seeking validation in some way?
Not many posts from true "average" or larger ladies.Perhaps the silent "larger" majority have embraced the feminism of the last 80 years or so and don't see their worth by a measure of a number on a clothes label?

solando · 01/08/2025 09:08

I usually take M to be 12-14 but always google the sizing in any brand which I don't usually buy

1apenny2apenny · 01/08/2025 09:20

I use clothing sizes as a guide really. Next and M&S are generally generous. If I buy something in a charity shop that’s older/vintage then I know it will be ‘properly’ sized. That said if not sized by number I would expect small to be 8-10, medium 12-14, large 16-18.

So to me it doesn’t matter what clothes size I am what matters is my body composition, you can be a healthy BMI but have body fat and no/little muscle.

thevassal · 01/08/2025 09:32

Vastimir · 31/07/2025 19:36

I am average height (5’5”), a bit under 10st, BMI 23. I feel average/medium. I am a size 12.

Where do you buy your clothes? I am shorter and fatter than you and suppose i would say generally I'm a 12 but recently everything in that size has become massive. I bought a few things from asda and the "right" fit was the XS or size 6-8 which is just ridiculous - if I (chubby and overweight according to BMI) fit that then what is everyone smaller than me supposed to wear?

Sorry bit of a rant but yes op i would think your specific body type is medium (probably towards the smaller end of medium).

Listing a 12 as large is probably a hangover from when there were far few bigger sizes and a smaller range - so a 10 was average (e.g. the song "perfect 10") - thus one size smaller had to be small, one size bigger had to be large, if you were lucky the shop would also stock (depending on clientele) either XS or XL - if you were bigger than a 14 you were supposed to hide your face in shame and go and buy a tent.
