I’d say it’s more Medium. Vinted disagrees. AIBU?

Nobody who is a size 12 is a large person. Christ.
I have no idea about sizes in relation to clothes but I’d see a size 12 as medium

Matronic6 · 04/08/2025 22:11

I wear a size 12 on top and 14 on bottoms and always have to check the stores measures if it's S/M/L sizing. I am usually a M but may occasionally be an L.

Someone who is 5’1” size 12 would be pretty chunky

Pretty chunky! Don't talk such rot! 😂

I don’t resemble a hippo in size 18. What annoys me is when celebrities who are my size say they are size 12-No way!

Might they be American celebrities? Quoting US sizes?

Limonades · 02/08/2025 07:18

Men’s sizing is indeed SO much easier. I wish women’s trousers & jeans were clearly labelled with waist size (eg 28, 30) and inside leg length (eg 30, 32). Even in the description it rarely states these measurements, let alone in a single size number, like 8 or S?!

And people were definitely slimmer in the past, just look at old films and documentaries, especially of people at the beach

But the waist measurement is so inaccurate as trousers don’t sit on the waist

ohsososo · 04/08/2025 22:24

Denimrules · 02/08/2025 01:26

6 and 8 are below standard sizing, ie extra sml, 10 and 12 are sml, 14 is medium and 16 is large

In what universe? I’m a small 8. Sometimes 6 but that’s vanity sizing for sure. I am 5’3” and definitely not skinny anywhere in my body. I fit an XS or a S. Size 12 is not small. It’s medium

What do you think a size 18 is?

XXL

Why?

That poster is just following the logic in the OP, if anything they are minimising it because if a 12 is L, a 14 is XL, then following the sequence an 18 would then have to be an XXXL!

If a shop is following that sizing convention how else would you denote an 18? Just have all sizes above 10 as L with no ability to distinguish between them?

Answer the question yourself -what do YOU think an 18 is? If just "large" then that would make a 16 medium (perhaps arguable given average size in the uk) but then that would make a 14 a small (as a 14 there is no way thats accurate) - and a size 8 would end up being a XXXS which surely you can see is a bit ridiculous?

Men couldn’t give a flying fuck, women are their own worst enemy.

😂😂
Some of us do... I'm very into clothes etc, and there are some strange anomalies in sizing, but generally, yes, men's sizing makes a lot more sense 👍🙂

veganfortheanimals21 · 19/08/2025 12:31

You all must be really really thin! Size 20 and above is XL, 16-18 is large and 12-14 medium 8-10 is small and below is xs and xxs.

Vastimir · 31/07/2025 19:36

I am average height (5’5”), a bit under 10st, BMI 23. I feel average/medium. I am a size 12.

I'm really surprised you're a 12 at that height/weight

I'm a similar height, 2 stone heavier and wear a 12 or a 14.

When I am 10st, I am a 10

Flamingfeline · 19/08/2025 12:42

I’m finding this thread quite a downer. Women arguing and getting hot under their XS collars about whether a size 12 is “large”… as defined by who? Then going on to also argue about whether people (also women) are overweight if they’re such and such a size …
Some threads would have been better never to have been born. I don’t mean the frivolous jokey ones, but the ones that touch on themes bound to get us at each others’ (XS/S/M/L) throats. I mean no offence to the OP.
A dress size is just a label, you can tell when you try it on whether it fits or not.

TakeMeToAnIgloo · 19/08/2025 14:52

As defined by Vinted, which was the point of the thread - the weird equivalences that Vinted has in its sizing choices, and the problems that creates for people trying to search! Vinted puts size 12 and size L in the same category, and that makes it difficult for users, because most people seem to agree that if you wear a 12, you're probably also looking for M clothes. This means you have to search with two categories, and also get a lot of unhelpful results. It's a reasonable thing to be annoyed by.

Shape and skeleton size changes everything.
I’m 5ft 7, 11 stone 4, size 12 and very slim. But I know some will look at those stats and assume I’m large.

henlake7 · 19/08/2025 15:12

Vinted sizing is a giant pain in the arse. I usually end up looking at M/10 but then everything seems to be in medium which for most brands is 12-14 which is too big for me.
So as far as Vinted is concerned 12 is large!

RobertaFirmino · 19/08/2025 15:49

I think people are just getting their knickers in a twist about being 'large'. Which is silly as a woman of average height will look S-M at size 12.

Vinted is not known for its common sense approach.

It is! It's annoying me afresh because I'm buying Sweaty Betty gym stuff and searching for Vinted M/10, but I keep clicking on the leggings and they are size S because the lister has said "I'm a size 10 and they fit me".

Agree, particularly when there is no common definition between shops as to what a size actually is. A 10 in next can be a 14 in h&m. Actually even the same woman could be a 10 on bottom and a 24 on top if she has big boobs. My friend and I usually wear the same size but have completely different body shapes- she's nearly a foot taller than me for one thing!

It's really not worth stressing about.

HappilyDivorced89 · 20/08/2025 09:26

In my head 8-10 is small, 12-14 is medium, 16-18 is large and 20+ is extra large

I saw size 6 swimsuits in Tesco recently (there were lots of them too indicating there can't be many women that size. The available sizes in stock jumped from size 6 straight to size 18 indicating that most women must be between sizes 8 to 16.

At the end of the day, does it really matter? Wear whatever size fits you...nobody is going to be looking at the size label of your clothes and, if they do, that says more about them than you!

I'm a size 14 and have been for a long time - there was a time I was a 12 (and can still fit into some size 12 tops depending on the style), but that was when I was in my 20s and long before I had a child. I'm also 5ft 5, pear shaped and curvy.

To be honest I don’t care that much

Corfumanchu · 22/08/2025 08:47

The other tning ofcourse isthat it is about shape as well as size. Many people do not come in standard proportions. So no one size is going yo fit all parts of their body.
