To think size 12 isn’t Large?

Vastimir · 31/07/2025 19:28

I’d say it’s more Medium. Vinted disagrees. AIBU?

Medium in most shops. I've recently gone down to a ten and Small fits better.

LaurieFairyCake · 31/07/2025 20:59

I was obese at a size 12 because I’m short. I’m now a 6-8 at 8 stone and bmi 23.

I am a size 12 and weigh 8 stone with a BMI of 20, so I do not think size 12 is large. No-one would look at me and say I am large.

I am a size 10 and weigh 11st 7lbs with a BMI of 25. I often fit Small clothes now. No-one would look at me these days and say I'm enormous but I'm not sure they would say I was small or skinny either, and medium sized would be fine.

Doggymummar · 31/07/2025 21:01

That's why sellers are supposed to take photos of the size tag. A monsoon size 12 IS A SIZE 12 for that brand, but it might measure the same as a 10 in Marks most of us know what size we are in the shops we shop in so it doesn't matter if that is s m or l, you buy the size you are in the brand you are buying. Vinted is Lithuanian so I imagine they are working on European sizing.

lljkk · 31/07/2025 21:05

I'm taller than averge so to me, I think I should be in "large" size clothes. With 38" hips I fit size 10, with 39" hips I may move into size 12.

I think 12 should be a large because I'm 172 cm height which is fairly larger than ' average' height woman.

I personally feel like a contender for ‘My 600Ib Life’, when I’m a 12. To me it’s big.

You sound ghastly

ACR7 · 31/07/2025 21:11

It’s all relative to your height and body shape. I’m 5ft 11 so I’m very slim at a 12. I look at those photos wistfully as a 16 now!

Chickyhip · 31/07/2025 21:16

0-6 XS
8-10 S
12-14 M
16-18 L
20-22 XL

I'm 5 foot 2, 9st 10lb and wear 10-12. I don't feel large. But apparently I am!

Me too! Definitely feel small to medium. The Vinted thing bugs me as well

runningpram · 31/07/2025 21:29

Straightjacketsandroses · 31/07/2025 19:45

I don’t believe this. I’m a 8-10 and I struggle to imagine many women were slimmer than I am years ago as I have literally no weight to lose. I’m average height too. Some shops I think vanity size (Next, I’m looking at you) but mostly I find a 10 fairly small as a body type and can’t imagine many women much slimmer than that years ago!

I agree. There is more obesity but normal sized people who are not overweight are just built a bit differently than in the past. Women today have muscle mass, don't wear corsets to artificially bring in waist and are just plain taller

runningpram · 31/07/2025 21:33

I just don't get how it was possible to have a 24/23 waist. Literally no-one bar celebrities and children have waists of those proportions today. I do much more exercise than my mum, I eat much more healthily and weigh less at a similar height but my waist is massive, compared to how people were in the 70s. I think we're just a bit bigger these days but not necessarily fatter if that makes sense

HansHolbein · 31/07/2025 21:43

My waist is 24in - we do exist!

It used to be double that, though. I can’t quite believe it myself…

Reduxrabbit · 31/07/2025 21:51

I’m about to turn 60 and am by and large a size 12 but a good 30lb plus heavier than I was at 18, when I was also a size 12. So by mum’s standards now, were she still around, I’m large because I wasn’t a particularly slender teen by the standards of the time.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 31/07/2025 21:52

I'm 5ft 6, 10 stone and a small size 12. I do not consider myself large and yes, Vinted does irritate me for this.

I was a size 18, I've lost 3 stone and at 51, if I lost any more weight my face would start to look really old. I don't consider myself skinny but I'd definitely say medium rather than large.

I am not entirely convinced that sizing has changed so much in my life time, maybe a little but not loads. I was a size 14 back in my late teens and early 20's at a slightly heavier weight than I am now.

ddfd21 · 31/07/2025 21:52

It is im afraid

Purpleturtle45 · 31/07/2025 21:53

youalright · 31/07/2025 19:35

I think 8 -10 is small 12- 14 medium 16-18 large and 20+ extra large

Same for me. I ordered a size 12 dress from a website and it said XL on the label 🤦🏼‍♀️

Allseeingallknowing · 31/07/2025 21:54

ddfd21 · 31/07/2025 21:52

That’s ridiculous- 18-20 is large!

BananaSquiggle · 31/07/2025 22:02

aintnospringchicken · 31/07/2025 19:39

I’m a size 10/12. I’m 5ft 8 tall and weigh 63 kg. I would always go for a medium size.Large is generally too big on me.In some shops I need a small. I think a lot depends on the shop and it’s sizing.

Yeah I’m slightly shorter than you and weigh 7kg more but I’m also a size 10/12 - mostly a 10 in places I shop. Not sure I’d like to see what size I am where you shop. 😂

SouthernNights59 · 31/07/2025 22:03

iamnotalemon · 31/07/2025 19:54

I’m a size 16. Oh dear 😆

Me too - and if I am buying clothing which isn't stated as an actual size I buy large. What am I thinking? 😃

TreeCake · 31/07/2025 22:08

Missingpate · 31/07/2025 21:22

Me too! Definitely feel small to medium. The Vinted thing bugs me as well

when I saw I’d been quoted I was half expecting a ‘but you’re massive’ comment. So thanks for the solidarity instead!
I’ve recently lost about 10lbs but don’t seem to have dropped a dress size.

UrbanOasis · 31/07/2025 22:11

Doesn't it depends on your height?

SuperBlondie28 · 31/07/2025 22:11

It's the height of clothes on Vinted that's a problem for me. I know vaguely from the style /shop if something will fit or not width wise.

Today I received a dress. I'd asked the seller before buying, what length it was. I told her I'm 5ft 3". She replied back its a midi on me. I bought it. It's below my ankles. I've complained. But resold it tonight. Midi is mid calf evidently. Lost £1.34.

I would totally ignore what Vinted reckons is small, medium, etc as a buyer.

As a seller, photos of all labels on listing is essential.

Comedycook · 31/07/2025 22:13

I was actually going to start my own thread about this as I was thinking about it after using vinted

I think a 12 is a medium too. In my mind it's...

6 xxs
8 xs
10 s
12 m
14 l
16 xl
18 xxl

PerfectTuesday · 31/07/2025 22:13

"Size 12" or size anything is almost completely meaningless these days. There's no standardisation in sizing anymore. It could be large, medium or small - even from the same shop.

If buying online ask for the actual measurements of the garment and whether it has any stretch to check whether it will fit you.

Lyocell · 31/07/2025 22:14

Purpleisnotmycolour · 31/07/2025 19:34

It's large as a 12 now is an old 16.

Definitely this! I bought a m&s skirt off Vinted last week that said it was a size 12. It was an old item - I didn’t realise - and the label said size 12 and a 26” waist!
