I’d say it’s more Medium. Vinted disagrees. AIBU?

I have a pair of M&S shorts, vintage 1991. They are a size 12, which, at that time was waist 26, hips 37 - according to the label inside (and still fit).
I am so sick to death of vanity sizing and trying to work out which way to compensate. Got massively caught out some years ago when M&S changed its sizing (without warning). Went to buy a nice wool suit for work, in a 12 skirt and 14 jacket. The skirt nearly fell off me and the jacket was HUGE.
Turns out I needed a 10 skirt and 12 jacket, so I had to traipse back and swap them.
Mind you the same thing happened when I had something made to measure. I have no idea whose measurements they used, but at the first fitting I put the skirt on and it fell to the floor with the zip and button done up!
The tailor was very embarrassed!

Large as a size online can be anything from size 12 to 18 depending on the brand

MrsArcher23 · 31/07/2025 20:10

It’s the sizing used by European websites like Mango, Zara, Tara Jarmon.

I see M as 10 and to me L is 12, so I’ll buy according to how I want whatever the item is to fit. S is 8 I think!

Traditionally, UK sizes would be...
XXS 4-6
XS 6-8
S 10-12
M 12-14
L 16 -18
XL 18-20
XXL 20-22
Sizes vary so much though.

Yes if you are buying online and the options are small, medium or large.

What size is large?

You have to check the sizing information on each site.

UpsideDownChairs · 31/07/2025 20:11

In Uniqlo I'm an XL, and I'm a 16. So that makes a L a 14, a M a 12 and a 10 a S.

In supermarkets, I'm a 14, or a medium normally - so goodness knows what's going on there.

To my mind, 12 is medium, 10 is small, 8 is XS. But that's from my childhood 30 years ago. These days, I think you need measurements or to try stuff on.

AlphaFemaleNotBeta · 31/07/2025 20:13

uk 12 is Large.

workshy46 · 31/07/2025 20:15

I’m a size 6 now .. I was about 2 stone heavier in my teens and would have been a size 14/16 .. I’d say that’s a 12 in todays sizing. I look at a size 12 now and in most shops bar maybe a Zara etc but they are large

BarnacleBeasley · 31/07/2025 20:15

It's annoying on Vinted, as it varies by brand, but the brands I am usually looking for treat an S as a 10 so it makes it harder to filter.

Impossible for outfits that dont exist anymore, brands change their sizing over time too.

PigletSanders · 31/07/2025 20:29

Well, and therein lies the problem.

I don’t believe this. I’m a 8-10 and I struggle to imagine many women were slimmer than I am years ago as I have literally no weight to lose. I’m average height too. Some shops I think vanity size (Next, I’m looking at you) but mostly I find a 10 fairly small as a body type and can’t imagine many women much slimmer than that years ago!

It is. Although old 16 didn’t look very large back in the day even though most people were smaller if you see what I mean.
In the early 70’s when I was a teenager a size 12 was a 24” waist. I had to buy size 14 from Chelsea Girl as my waist was a “ massive” 26”.
My waist now is 29/30 which back in the day was 16/18 but today I’m wearing a pair of next shorts in size 10 which measure a 30” across the waist and 38” across the hips

LadeOde · 31/07/2025 20:42

Size 12 in the UK is medium.

8-10 (small) 12-14 (medium) 16-18 (Large) 18-20 (X Large)

Butchyrestingface · 31/07/2025 20:44

It’s large on me as I am 5 ft 2 and overweight. Wouldn’t be large on a 6 ft female but they have to draw somewhere.

I’m a current size 6-8 and am very toned, so I agree that I also appear to have no weight to lose. However, I still have a skirt from 1983 from when I was 18, which is size 10 and I can’t get anywhere near being able to do it up. Kept for sentimental reasons, I should add, I’m not a hoarder!

RB68 · 31/07/2025 20:45

Depends if its fashionista or real life sizing in my book

SomethingFun · 31/07/2025 20:45

It’s ridiculous size 12 is a large on Vinted as in no high street shop in 2025 is a large equivalent to a 12.

I do wish threads about dress sizes didn’t descend into vanity sizing moaning and posts about being an actual whale if your dress size is in double figures. This is the anonymous internet - we can’t see you and no one cares anyway 😁

Yes, I was a 14 and my waist was about 25, now waists seem to be about 30-32 if you are size 12-14, as mine is.

FlappyFish · 31/07/2025 20:49

So a size 6 by this reckoning is XXXS. 😝

Greentambourine · 31/07/2025 20:50

I am a size 12 and weigh 8 stone with a BMI of 20, so I do not think size 12 is large. No-one would look at me and say I am large.

JLou08 · 31/07/2025 20:51

I'm a size 12. When I buy clothes that are sized small, medium or large I do fit into medium. I suppose it could depend what side of size 12 your on. I could squeeze into 10s and 14s are way to big.

Nchangeo · 31/07/2025 20:51

MidnightMeltdown · 31/07/2025 19:44

I think there’s some overlap in sizing because not all shops size in the same way. I’d say:

6-8 XS
8-10 S
10-12 M
12-14 L
14-16 XL

This.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 31/07/2025 20:53

Vastimir · 31/07/2025 19:36

I am average height (5’5”), a bit under 10st, BMI 23. I feel average/medium. I am a size 12.

Snap! Same height, same weight, same BMI. I think L is a 14, not a 12. I find Vinted really annoying on this.

BoarBrush · 31/07/2025 20:53

I think clothes sizing has a lot to answer for. I've always been 5'5 and 8st4ish but with very wide shoulders and hips and even buying jumpers a few months ago xxs and a 4 were hanging off me (next and h&m), it's utterly ridiculous.

This is why I buy all my jeans off ebay/vinted/charity shops so I can buy old jeans that I know will fit perfectly.

DashboardConfession · 31/07/2025 20:54

It's not about whether it's comparatively "large", it's just annoying because in most brands (such as gym stuff like Sweaty Betty) an M is a 12 so if you list your "M" leggings you have to state they are too big for a size 10.
