Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

It doesn’t need HR approval - in the past we’ve also done things such as bowling, escape room, ninja warrior type course. It was something different and really fun.

I can imagine those being, um, clothed environments. I would never ever turn up at a work event, no matter how casual and freewheeling, in a thong bikini. Not because I didn’t have one, but because that is totally inappropriate.

LurkyMcLurkinson · 09/07/2025 12:57

He absolutely has no right to attempt to have any influence on what you wear, and his comments about trying to impress your colleagues demonstrates insecurity on his part and a desire to control you. Be mindful of future indicators of control, such as trying to say you can’t wear certain clothes, makeup etc, or spend time with certain people. That said, I do think he as a right to (silently) judge you for wearing a thong on a work trip though, or on a slide that will have encountered multiple asses that day, but ultimately you do you!

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 09/07/2025 12:49

Yeah you don’t wear them unless you want attention. I was fed up of seeing peoples bum cheeks on a recent holiday. Aren’t they uncomfortable?

I feel very old Confused

TBF it's nothing to do with age. It's to do with self respect & how much of your body your willing to expose in front of strangers, children & just as bad your father. I'd be mortified. I would never consider having my bum out in public if this look was fashionable in the not too distant past despite having the figure for it.

I’m with him, I wouldn’t dream of wearing a thong to a work event.

Agree. Nor would I want to see colleagues in one!

maybelou · 09/07/2025 12:58

Were there kids at this pool? If there were then it's really inappropriate. Even if there weren't it's generally frowned upon to have your genitalia out in public - cheers but I don't want to see your flaps winking at me as you come down the slides 🙅🏻‍♀️

minnienono · 09/07/2025 12:58

wearing a thong bikini to a work thing is a bit icky to me

Flaps winking sent me 😂

This cannot be real. No normal person wears a thong bikini to a work event. Good trolling OP.

this is my thought, anyone wearing that to an aqua park is leaving themselves open to tits, arse and flaps falling out on the slides, attention seeking at its best.....if of course, this even happened!

JadeHoliday · 09/07/2025 11:33

Yeah it was but I really don’t see the issue

Yeah, to be fair to your DP, I wouldn’t be wearing a thong bikini to a work event. In the same way that there are certain clothes I don’t wear in the office because they don’t look professional, the same logic would apply to swimwear. I’d probably wear a one-piece but if I did wear a bikini it would be a very conservative one. I don’t want my boss seeing my butt cheeks thank you very much (and he probably doesn’t want to see them either!)

Dinoswearunderpants · 09/07/2025 13:00

You're in the wrong. Partner perhaps could have articulated himself better but there's no way in hell I'd have my bum out in front of my colleagues.

Pinty · 09/07/2025 13:01

It's none of his business and you can wear what you like. But I agree with him.
Public swimming pools are not the right places for skimpy bikinis.

I probably sound like a prude but a thong bikini would not be something I would wear at a work event.

uhta · 09/07/2025 13:02

Colleagues are not generally people who you want seeing you in a thong bikini. I imagine your partner knows that there will have been men using that memory as wank fodder. But it's your choice so if that's what you choose, then your partner can't do anything about it - he is allowed to be uncomfortable with it though, as he clearly is.

outerspacepotato · 09/07/2025 13:04

You went on water slides in a thong?

At a work do?

Okey dokey.

Yeah, inappropriate for a work thing.

Epidote · 09/07/2025 13:04

I wouldn't wear a thong bikini to a water park even with my boyfriend in a private event. I wouldn't want my butt cheeks exposed and in contact with the rides.
I wouldn't wear a bikini thong or brief in any work related stuff. I have people to manage and my belly, bum etc is not for display among colleagues I barely know.
I'm not a model and if I were I wouldn't do it neither.

ButteredRadish · 09/07/2025 13:04

No idea what a ‘hump’ is but wow you were all but naked?!?!

However, I think anyone wearing a thong bikini in public is wrong! Why is it ok for strangers to see you as close to naked as physically possible, but not work colleagues?

Ruby0707 · 09/07/2025 13:05

MauriceTheMussel · 09/07/2025 11:52

HTF was this event rubber-stamped by HR?!

HR are not there to police what people do. It's a management decision.

You wore a thong bikini on a work function?!

I see why your DH is pissed off. That's massively inappropriate. They're slutty!

I don't even think a bikini is appropriate on a work function. A swim costume is what you should have worn.

ThreeTescoBags · 09/07/2025 13:09

Icanttakethisanymore · 09/07/2025 11:34

Surely the only difference between a swimming costume and a bikini is that your stomach and back are visible? Either way tell him to piss off.

As an aside, how old are you? I can imagine lots of people would really baulk at the idea of jumping in the pool with their work colleagues!

I'd resign on the spot and consider it constructive dismissal if there was a requirement for me to wear a thong bikini to a work event 😂

silkypyjamas · 09/07/2025 13:09

can I retract my UANBU - even on the tightest and pert of bottoms, those bikinis are horrible. Hate seeing young girls wearing them, not classy at all.

mrsh2025 · 09/07/2025 13:10

Totally inappropriate and tbh could be seen as a
little disrespectful to your colleagues actually

Pomegranatecarnage · 09/07/2025 13:11

If it was a thong style, I think it’s weird to wear that in an indoor complex with slides and especially in front of colleagues. A standard bikini with arse coverage is fine.

Kbroughton · 09/07/2025 13:11

So much judgement on this thread with most missing the point. You are a grown woman and therefore it is up to you to decide what is appropriate attire for a work event. I should imagine that in a workplace where a trip to a slip and slide is not balked at, then a bikini is entirely appropriate . In any case, that is up to you and you alone. He is channelling his insecurities to you in an inappropriate way.

Work event at a swimming pool?

Hahaha my thought too.
