Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

I voted YANBU but then I saw you say it was a thong bikini and I changed my vote to YABU! Wildly inappropriate for a work event.

We are a fairly young office, most of us are in our 30’s. At least I like to think we are young 😂

Thirties aren't that young really. If everyone else was wearing the same thing ie if that was the standard then I guess you wouldn't have stood out in the crowd.

It also depends on your role, I'd be a bit uncomfortable if you were a line manager tbh.

Keepingoin · 09/07/2025 12:43

Given I think think a thong bikini is amongst the most embarrassing & attention seeking look around a pool I'm not surprised he felt it was unsuitable for a work event.

ZenNudist · 09/07/2025 12:44

But you did have your arse out. How mortifying for you. What would you not dress appropriately for work event? A bikini is a stupid thing to wear to a waterpark. You have to cross your hands over your chest and hang on to it on the big rides. I'd rather just be comfortable.

LBFseBrom · 09/07/2025 12:44

You don't have 'your arse out' in a bikini, unless it's a thong of course.

witchesfly · 09/07/2025 12:44

OP, with all due respect, just because you can doesn't always mean you should. This was a work event and as such the swimwear you describe is completely inappropriate.

Bubbletrain · 09/07/2025 12:45

A thong bikini at a work event is beyond cringe.

strawlight · 09/07/2025 12:47

Did the others also have their butt cheeks hanging out of a thong?

Did anyone else wearing a thong bikini? I agree with others that maybe that wasn't appropriate for a work event.

StiffAsAVicar · 09/07/2025 12:47

Swimming is an odd work event. Thong bikini is obviously revealing and personally I would have worn something more modest. BUT I don’t think he should have said anything, thinking it to himself for a few seconds is fine.

I think he is projecting. Guilty people often project and reveal their own dodgy boundaries….that’s why they’re insecure about it, because they know it’s something THEY might do (Be inappropriate with work colleagues)

We’ve all got each other on insta so they’ve seen it all before with holidays pics etc 😂

what’s your job OP? I feel like it’s probably not a particularly professional or cooperate one?

there’s no way my work would do this event and have everyone in what is essentially their undies!!

I’m with your DH. I’m not normally a party pooper but I do think this is a bit much!!

equally with insta (and similar) - I think it depends on your position in the company. There’s no way it’d be appropriate for my colleagues to see my personal/private life and “see it all”.

VaccineSticker · 09/07/2025 12:48

Your husband is right.
It is like wearing gym attire to a wedding party.
Totally and utterly inappropriate not just considering you were with work colleagues, the fact your wore this a family venue is something else.
Attention seeking at its best.

Well done.

HeartyViper · 09/07/2025 12:49

I think I’d rather not go than see my colleagues in a thong bikini. I wouldn’t say it’s ever appropriate at a work event.

You do you, though.

Lindy2 · 09/07/2025 12:49

Going down a waterslide in a thong is not for the faint hearted.

I'm all for free choice but skimpy beachwear isn't particularly professional. However, a work event at a swimming pool is also rather odd - (and probably a lot of people's idea of absolute hell).

RightOnTheEdge · 09/07/2025 12:49

YABU. I think it was totally inappropriate. Same goes for people who wear them for family swim sessions, or any swimming sessions really.

I do not want to see random people's arse cheeks.

I don't care if that makes me a prude.

Yeah you don’t wear them unless you want attention. I was fed up of seeing peoples bum cheeks on a recent holiday. Aren’t they uncomfortable?

I feel very old Confused

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 09/07/2025 12:50

Did any of the men have thongs?

Which, it was.

ShesTheAlbatross · 09/07/2025 12:51

Obviously he’s not in charge of what you wear. But if a friend of mine was going on an away day like that and asked my opinion, I would say absolutely not a thong bikini.

Bloozie · 09/07/2025 12:52

2024onwardsandup · 09/07/2025 12:26

I’m not sure that I believe that a work place really had an event where people had to wear a swimming costume. If they did I aM horrified by the thought.

Yeah I'd call in sick those days... I don't want my colleagues to see me in a swimsuit, and I don't want to see them in swimsuits. I'd feel the embarrassment of those that would rather cover up really acutely - no idea why management would put their team in that position, when some people really struggle with self-image or have past experiences that make them feel vulnerable when exposed - and my eyes would roll so far into the back of my head I'd fall over backwards at the people that take the opportunity to get the budgie smugglers and thongs out.

okydokethen · 09/07/2025 12:52

I’m with him, I wouldn’t dream of wearing a thong to a work event.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 09/07/2025 12:53

I always wonder about employers that come up with these type of away days. It's like they want to encourage affairs.

Anyway, a thong bikini isn't appropriate anywhere . It's the equivalent of a man in a mankini.

Namechangerage · 09/07/2025 12:53

Very weird behaviour to wear a thong bikini to a work event. I mean it’s weird to have a work event at a swimming pool anyway.

Why did you feel the need to have your arse cheeks on show to colleagues? Genuine question - I’m all for dressing how you want but this seems like odd behaviour.

Katbum · 09/07/2025 12:55

This cannot be real. No normal person wears a thong bikini to a work event. Good trolling OP.

Haha yes. Anyone that rocked a thong bikini in front of me would be known as Borat forever more. Or just a prat.
