Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

I voted YANBU until I read it was a thong bikini and now wish I could change my vote. Sorry, but thong bikini at work event...just no!

You can. Click on YABU.

Pipsquiggle · 09/07/2025 14:31

I do believe you should be able to wear whatever you want, when you want........... but with this mantra comes self reflection and responsibility.

If you are in a work setting you need to think about how you want to come across, what you wear is a key part of that.

I would not wear this on a team day but that's my choice - I work in a big corporate setting and don't want colleagues seeing my arse. Other workplaces might have a different vibe where this is fine.

Fancycheese · 09/07/2025 14:32

Surely this isn’t genuine? Who in their right mind would want to go swimming with colleagues, let alone wear a thong bikini around them? 😂 I’m glad you had a fun time. I rather have a holiday in hell.

Floundering66 · 09/07/2025 14:32

I mean - you can wear what you want but I wouldn’t wear a bikini (definitely not a thong bikini) to a work event. It’s too similar to underwear, not how I would want my colleagues to see me! (I do work in construction though, so very make dominated)

Yeah it was but I really don’t see the issue

Then yes if it was a thong then completely inappropriate in front of work colleagues.

Moonlightdust · 09/07/2025 14:41

I would have hated going to a pool for a works team bonding day. Even if I were a model I wouldn’t have chosen to wear a thong bikini - why would you want your boss ogling your backside!

Iamacatslave · 09/07/2025 14:42

Thong bikini 🤣

LancashireButterPie · 09/07/2025 14:43

Urgh. I can honestly think of nothing worse than getting in a pool with colleagues. Who dreamed up this idea?

A thong bikini is a dreadful choice for a work thing.

This! A bikini fine but a thong? Nope. Mind you I think they are awful anyway. Even when I had a peachy nice arse I was discerning about who saw it and work colleagues /randoms at a pool or beach were not on the list

I want to change my vote on this now - YABU to wear a thong in front of work colleagues imo

You can change your vote by just clicking on the other option. I did after I read that it was a thong with her arse hanging out.

runningonberocca · 09/07/2025 14:46

A thong bikini to a work event?! I’m with your boyfriend on this one.
Was anyone else wearing a thong? A normal one piece or a bikini with an arse in it - fine. But honestly no one wants to have that much exposure to the crotch of their work colleagues

sparkleghost · 09/07/2025 14:47

I voted YANBU before seeing it was a thong bikini but having read the update, is it not a bit unprofessional? I bet it went right up your bum on the slides as well!

Sidebeforeself · 09/07/2025 14:47

Yeah okay then

LaDeeDaDeeDumb · 09/07/2025 14:47

I think you need to disregard the actual votes here, seeing as most people probably voted before reading “thong bikini”

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 09/07/2025 14:47

Also, I get thongs on a beach, where you want a tan. But in a swimming pool / waterpark you are literally just showing your arse off.

Lookuptotheskies · 09/07/2025 14:47

Jesus!

I voted yanbu, then I saw in a further comment it was a thong bikini! Not appropriate for a work event op. 🙄 It shouldn't need to be stated in HR rules that if a work event requires swimwear, thongs are not appropriate, that's just common sense. 🤦🙄

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 09/07/2025 14:48

Also, what were your co-workers wearing? Clive from HR in speedos? Claire from IT just nipple tassels?

Sunshineismyfavourite · 09/07/2025 14:48

I'd say not appropriate for an indoor swim session with colleagues but appropriate for a beach holiday. But I'm not sure why I think this as the same people could be at ether event, so ....

Tbh if I looked fabulous in a thong bikini I'd probably be wearing it all the time!

Wear what you want. He sounds insecure and that isn’t your problem.

BeenzManeenz · 09/07/2025 14:50

He sounds sexist! Did he want you to go in a shroud of some sort?! Tell him to get a grip.

What you do or don't wear has absolutely nothing to do with him, its not about respect. He doesn't own you.

A swimsuit would seem more appropriate for a work event and one that gives reasonable coverage. In the same way I wouldn’t want Dave from accounts wearing teeny speedos.

Yep. This.

CousinBob · 09/07/2025 14:51

Bit risky on the water slides I would have thought.
