Partner got really funny about swimwear I wore to work away day

We had a two day work ‘away trip’ last week where one of the bonding things was going to an indoor swimming complex with slides etc. Really fun!

When I got back from this, my partner said ‘you didn’t wear a bikini did you’- which I said I obviously did.

He thinks that’s disrespectful and I should have worn a swim suit ‘rather than have my arse out in front of colleagues’(!)

I told him he can’t control what I wear and he got the hump. He thinks I was trying to make myself attractive and impress colleagues..

Would you say I should have ‘covered up’ or is he being unreasonable

You wore a thong in front of co-workers, bosses etc? Yeah that's weird.

brunettemic · 09/07/2025 13:49

Wear what you want in my view but the thing is…if someone posted that their DH/DP went to a work thing with a pool and a coworker was wearing a thong there would be people up in arms and saying she’s trying shag the men there.

Rewis · 09/07/2025 13:51

What is his objection? That you wore a bikini in public, in public without him, in front of your colleagues, in front of specific colleague, that it was not work appropriate (with friends fine) or what?

Edited

I think it was the fact she wore a thong

I am now imagining some of my colleagues in their swim togs...(forty- and fifty-something consultant doctors, mainly male)...I am now not enjoying this and would rather get back to work.

Same here, but wearing the retina-ruining male equivalent of thong Speedos that a previous poster just mentioned.

I've had better days... Edited to add that I added a picture of said thong Speedos. From the Speedo website. And it is 'under review' by Mumsnet, presumably because of the acres of flesh and jocking great bulge it's showing off.

Be interesting to see if a product shot from a brand is deemed 'appropriate' by this site, relative to thongs being appropriate at work events.

He said that he wouldnt approve regular bikini either. And what is his reason why thong/bikini is not ok.

I can think of nothing worse than my colleagues in swimwear 😂

But OP isn’t being unreasonable to wear swimwear to a water park.

Are thong bikinis really “swimwear” though? Surely they were designed more for sunbathing on a beach and minimising tan lines, and if trying to do much actual swimming they’d be a nightmare.

What was the top half like OP? Guessing teeny weeny triangles?

Because it was a work event? With colleagues? With bosses?

I thought you were going to say if someone posted that their DH/DP went to a work thing with a pool wearing a thong themselves.

I was also wondering why the heck anyone would wear a thong bikini to a pool with water slides in any event, never mind with work colleagues. Surely you run the risk of friction burns and revealing everything to all and sundry when you hit the water? it's been a very long time since I went to a water park

Presumably she wouldn't wear a bra and pants to work...?

I mean. I say this, but...

There are contexts for clothing.

Neemie · 09/07/2025 13:58

My husband had to wear swimwear once to a work event. He wore baggy swim shorts, not a banana hammock. We would have taken the piss out of him if he had worn any form of thong and my daughter would not have let him out of the door with the offending item.

If you want to be taken seriously and not be subject to gossip then a thong bikini is not the way forward. Also, if your work is like mine, everyone will definitely assume you are trying to attract someone and be laughing and speculating about who it is.

Stressedoutmama123 · 09/07/2025 13:58

I’m with DH here, sorry. I’m all for people can wear what they want but I don’t want to see people I work with in swim wear and even worse if it’s a thong bikini or speedos.

How many of you were there? Were there men there? Are you gorgeous? Do you have a great figure? I do think these are relevant questions, but I can honestly see how your husband feels.

I was supposed to go to similar a few years ago and I got that anxious about what I would wear to a spa and being half naked in front of colleagues I ended up saying at the last minute I couldn't go. Actually 3 other colleagues did the same, we didn't see it as appropriate. I asked one colleague why she wasn't going and she said because I want to keep my husband (it was an overnight thing in a mixed lodge) very inappropriate.

I just despair at some of these comments. In what way are those questions relevant? Are you saying if the OP is gorgeous and there were men there then she wouldnt be able to control herself? Are you saying that people who are not 'gorgeous' never have affairs? It is not up to anyone to tell another adult what is appropriate attire for work. Its up to the adult to decide and suffer the consequences if they get it wrong. And the fact that you (and others) seem to be saying if she is gorgeous she should cover herself up is outrageous.

BangersAndGnash · 09/07/2025 14:00

I wouldn't wear a thong-style bikini to waterpark - not practical - so I can see why it might be seen as a 'look at me' choice.

Thongs for lying on the beach, fine.

Tumbling about in the water with your legs all over the place in front of colleagues, no.

Kuretake · 09/07/2025 14:00

No way did you spend a day with a load of colleagues with your arse out, this is such nonsense.

AeriatedAnna · 09/07/2025 14:02

Not a good look at all having that stuck up your ass in front of work colleagues. No one, should ever have to see this.

SirRodneyEfffing · 09/07/2025 14:03

I agree that you are free to wear whatever you are comfortable in, and your partner should not expect a right of veto over that.

However, this thread is making me grateful that I work in a place where we don’t do away days, especially ones where swimming attire need to be worn in front of my colleagues

dontgetmestartedwillu · 09/07/2025 14:03

If this is a genuine post, wowsers, a thong bikini @JadeHoliday?!!

Even if you're very proud of your body - which I'm assuming you are, good for you - if you're wearing a thong bikini, it's really not suitable with work colleagues, you must realise this, no?

Each to their own, but I think throng bikinis, whatever the shape / size, are just grim. Bit like speedos. ;)

DBD1975 · 09/07/2025 14:04

This would be my worst nightmare. Not the bikini but having to do this for a team building exercise.
I would have worn a full wetsuit, snorkel and face mask.

heroinechic · 09/07/2025 14:05

Unless you work in a strip club thongs are never appropriate work wear. I would have worn a swimsuit around colleagues tbh but a regular bikini shouldn’t raise too many eyebrows.

RitaAndFrank · 09/07/2025 14:07

Blimey, this is about as far from my life as it gets 🤣 where on earth do you work, op 😵‍💫

2025ismybestyear · 09/07/2025 14:07

A thong bikini at a works do is not appropriate. Why anyone things anyone else wants to see their arse is not quite beyond me but it's not a good assumption.

IwouldlikeanewTV · 09/07/2025 14:08

dreadful. Completely inappropriate to wear a thing. To be honest I think swimming is not an inclusive activity for a work event. If it was on a Saturday afternoon fine. If it was in work time I feel sorry for anyone who did not want to show their body off or see the OPs arse.
