Disaster holiday at resort

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 15:35

Long story shortish,
me, my partner, son and MIL have paid a huge amount to stay in a resort this week. After the first night MIL had what we thought to be mosquito bites all over her arms and chest. They were blistering and weeping. Doctor gave her an injection antihistamine and directed us to stay in room for 72 hours. The very next morning MIL woke up with over 80 bites over her body, face, ears back and hands. Doctor confirmed it appeared to be bed bugs. Resort have moved MIL to another room however has now been told by doctor to avoid sunshine for another 72 hours. Meaning that 5 days of our holiday we have all been couped up in a room, and me and my partner have been taking turns in taking little one to the pool.

now we have found bites on our two year old. We’re not sure what to do. MIL is emotionally distressed and it’s so bad. The bites are so swollen and just everywhere, some have even popped so badly that her skin is raw.
am i being unreasonable to request a full refund from the resort as we have had a really horrifying experience

has anyone ever had this from a high end resort? .

I’m on page 6 of your post and I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet so just wanted to add that by Spanish law all restaurants and hotels etc have to have a complaints book on site and they absolutely must hand it over to you at your request to fill in. It probably won’t do you any good in terms of compensation or anything but they are inspected by their council annually (as far as I know) so would be good to have it officially documented for them to see so hopefully they can act on it if the hotel themselves don’t seem to be doing anything about the problem. I would presume that the more people that mention something like this the more likely it is that the council would be forced to do something

Thank you I will do this tomorrow morning!

Yes, I have mentioned this 👍🏻 a very powerful tool to use ✊🏻

I had herrendous bed bugs once, she won't scar.

Do be super careful with your luggage and washing when you get home, don't take ANYTHING upstairs or leave on soft furnishings or carpets until it's been washed and ironed, and fumigate your luggage.

Duechristmas · 20/06/2025 21:51

Twitchitch · 20/06/2025 16:03

She woke up with 80 bites…. She she aware of being eaten alive overnight?!

You can't feel them bite, you just wake up looking like you have some hideous spotty disease

Barney16 · 20/06/2025 21:52

This is horrendous. I feel so sorry for you all. Echo what people are saying about not infesting your own home. We had a flea infestation years ago, basically cat wasn't treated and brought them in. I had a new baby and they were everywhere. We had to have the house fumigated and I had a breakdown. Completely awful. I would bin your clothes tbh

Sisublondie · 20/06/2025 21:52

There have been more than a few PPs about the mental torture of bastard bed bugs…@Fleetbugamongst others .. and fleas…@Muffinmamand I’m happy to say I’ve dodged both thus far ( 🤞🙏 don’t mean to tempt fate before I fly next week 🙄🤷‍♀️👿!).

So, all the warnings of chucking your luggage! Your clothes! Walking into house naked ( and being butt (!) of your neighbours Ring doorbells!) and the rest could look like a tad of an overreaction ….. BUT!! I swear to God, if they are ANYTHING like the sheer living HELL of SCABIES, then PLEASE PAY ATTENTION to their warnings!!

If you are imagining bites, the pain, itching, the mental stress of where the bastard are coming from, then when the little cheeky fuckers are LIVING INSIDE YOUR BODY, and you can literally watch their direction change daily?! It literally almost drove me mentally insane ( and I don’t say that lightly, with family mental health issues). The scares thing is.., it took months, MONTHS!!! To find out WTF was going on with me!! The rashes on my arms ( nothing at all on my hands!!), round my back by my bra strap, but mainly my arms, the itching, the relentless, relentless ITCHING!! Zero Sleep! Maybe 10-15 minute then wake, and scratch yourself till you bleed again, then repeat! GP, I thought! Great! Ah, ok, “ just eczema ”. Ok. No…. Month later till another GP, “ hest rash” Antisan! Antihistamines! Ok. No, the agony, sounds even like i am exaggerating to myself, but it is constant! Constant! Itching. The feeling you have lost your mind as everyone around you is carrying on like normal ( thankfully!), but going about their day, at work, shops, they are acting like normal people, where all you want to do is strip off and SCRATCH! I remember about 21/2 months in after seeing yet another GP, I was talking my DS to a hospital appointment in a new town, it was roasting hot summer day, we’d got lost, had stopped to ask directions, and whilst a lovely couple were helping us, I had to shimmy inside my top to shimmy my bra off as the back strap was pure torture- and just shove my hand up my back and scratch scratch scratch…. Then it was two weeks in Greece in August - that was fun- spent a fortune in hotel clinic on potent Greek lotions and god- knows- what injections in my butt for my “ urticaria”… Oh, how much worse it was in hot weather! I was having hour or so sleep in stages… if one of my DS jumped on the bed, a stray grain of sand would mean a night of no sleep at all… relentless feeling of being utterly crazy as not knowing what it was!!!

Anyway… please bear with me… I’m trying to add to the bed bugs warning!…… getting on for FOUR months with this madness inducing moving itchy AF rash you could track, I took my DS to GP. Thank God it was with the Senior Partner. Not great with children and esp not with AudADHD like my DS. When we were leaving, I said, “ I know I don’t have an appointment and shouldn’t ask, but I’ve had this rash for months and I can’t sleep at all, all I do is itch and I genuinely think I’ve lost my tiny mind”… he asked me to show him, so I lifted the back of my top up….. he looked very seriously for zero seconds, glanced at DS and gravely said “You have Sarcoptes Scabiei”. It didn’t tide the Latin I didn’t do to go “ SCABIES?!?!” … and, as he started to calm me down, I just cried sobs of sheer RELIEF that I wasn’t losing my mind!! Something WAS not right! And, it was the tens of thousands of CF feeding off my insides!!! Taking my blood! My energy! And my mind!!

I collected my Strong AF potions, to go home to ditch my bedding, clothes, scrub myself and plaster the shit all over me to leave on for 24 hours, to kill the CF! Oh, and then, to REPEAT in 7 days!!!! Cause they won’t all be dead! But, I cried and cried with happiness ALL the way home in sheer joy!! First time I’d laughed in months!!

So! If bastard bed bugs are like scabies, please do ANYTHING to avoid bring them home! PP are NOT over exaggerating!! I genuinely genuinely became unhinged, esp as working on less than a couple hours sleep of tossing and turning every few minutes sleep.

So, @Fleetbug.. your “ it was the picture frame….. probably shouting gotcha!”… !! I knew what you meant!!!!! 🤩🤩🤩

Yes I’d rather walk the street naked with my hair caked in spray like a Mohawk at 6pm than being bed bugs into my house. No shame. And cheaper.

Flomingho · 20/06/2025 21:55

Yes, stayed at a lovely 5 star hotel in Alcudia, Majorca a few years ago and I was eaten alive by mosquitoes. It did make the last few days of my holiday less than enjoyable but I didn't complain because it wasn't the fault of the resort. However, bed bugs are a different ball game and are usually due to hygiene issues so I would complain about that in your situation.

Christwosheds · 20/06/2025 22:04

SixteentoOne · 20/06/2025 18:31

@Fleetbug— is there any danger of traveling with bed bugs on clothing and these infecting the plane?

I'm assuming not if people are allowed to fly home. 🤔

Yes technically they could get onto a plane via passengers but they are most likely to be in luggage and the hold isn’t a very hospitable place, I imagine they die off fairly quickly if they come off luggage. They have been found on the London Underground though, from people travelling. It’s true they are absolute bastards to get rid of. I am completely paranoid about them as I live in an old house with old furniture and many nooks and crannies, and I react horribly to insect bites.

Well we have spoken to the hotel because they have moved our rooms. We spoke with the manager today who is doing their best to make us y while we are in the room. I made this thread to find out if I am being unreasonable or not to ask for a full refund.

Ah god love you. Ignore all the why are you asking us comments. 🙈 Again shut mums net down if people like this poor lady can’t ask a bloody question🙈
Now to answer your question you absolutely are entitled to ask for and get a refund and it would not be out of the way for flipping compensation for the distress.

I got back from London and stripped at the door last night and every stitch out of suitcase straight into a hot wash. No suitcase or dirty washing was going on my bed🤢

Thanks to loads of DDT in the 50s and evolution, these beasts are now resistant to most poisons. But the council had a program of using different types. Don’t diy with sprays. Don’t do sniffer dogs either- we considered it! The cost of rentokil is extraordinary and they know you are desperate. Local councils have responsibility for pest control and were brilliant. A combo of steam cleaning, poisoning (council), sealing cracks in skirting boards, washing every item of clothing in the house at 60, and using a special earth that suffocates them all helped too. But it’s best to find their harbourage.

Their first harbourage was our wooden bedframe. Out it went with BEDBUGS written all over it ( embarrassing!) for the council to collect. But before they had the chance to come someone had nicked it! Omg!

After seeing my poor gran go through the hell of bedbugs, and having to throw wooden furniture out because of it - I cringe when I see people finding 'brilliant' items of furniture that have been out to the bin.

I think she wanted to get a idea of where they stand before approaching the hotel.

BakelikeBertha · 20/06/2025 22:43

I just wanted to say how sorry I am that your holiday has been ruined by this dreadful experience OP. It's absolutely appalling that this is an ongoing problem in the hotel, and they don't appear to have done anything to resolve it properly.

I do hope that your MIL gets better soon, and that you pursue the hotel for a full refund, AND compensation, which hopefully you can then spend on having another holiday somewhere else. However, be careful if going after compensation, not to use one of these companies who charge you a commission, like the one that someone gave a link to earlier in the post, as they do tend to take a pretty hefty chunk of what they get you, and you may well be able to put in a claim yourself. You can always try Citizen's Advice when you get back if you feel you need help.

Oh, and I'd also speak to as many other guests as you can, to find out who else has been bitten, and make sure you get their contact details, so that you can call them to evidence your claim if it should be needed.

Do you know how you got scabies?

Nope! That was the scariest thing, despite my utter relief as to knowing what was wrong with me 🤷‍♀️. I drive to work in office and can’t see a link there. Weird as neither DS got it. That Christmas 2018, I remember talking to my Mum about it ( she caught it when I was a child from a patient ( she was a Midwife) and saying how horrendous it was, it was playing with my head not knowing how I’d caught it and so how to avoid it……

But then, a couple of months later……. SCABIES RETURNED 😠😤🤯🤬!!! The lovely Pharmacist at my GP when I went to collect Strong AF Potion Round Two sympathised as I went “ Nooooooooo!!!!! Not again!!!!!!!!!”! She said it was not unheard of that the little CFs hadn’t been completely obliterated Round One! So! ANY talk of little critters like this scares me totally to death! I absolutely get all the PP on here, like the most recent London one ( sorry! I didn’t note your name!), who are terrified of getting the bastard bed bugs again and take whatever precautions they can!! As for me, I pray scabies doesn’t come in threes! 🤞🙏🤞!

Not uncommon perhaps, but those who do often end up looking “silly” because threads move a long way in 8 pages. And if you can’t even be bothered taking the few seconds required to filter and read just OP’s posts (you’d find that she’d addressed all your points already) you really should “pipe down” yourself.

Sorry, but bedbugs can survive for months without a meal. They can live on planes and in the luggage hold and overhead compartments. How likely they are to be spread on a plane depends on how thoroughly the plane is cleaned between trips.
